Hi Maj
Thanks for the info...I should have remembered that Ian did post that...been doing a lot of things since that post of his but I will start to chase the paint up as I can paint everything except the fuselage as the rest of the parts are completed.
Ian if you are seeing this post how much or each paint/primer did you use on the CabSav

Hi Maj
What was the primer and paint brand and roughly how much is needed of both...obviously you can add a lot of weight in primer and paint. I found this with my models you can easily add a 1000 grams of extra weight just with the paint and thats on a model so I would imagine 5 to 10kg could be added a full size quite easily. The information exchange on the forum is just fabulous. I trawl through all the last posts in 24 hrs every day and I am amazed at some of the tips and tricks you can pic up there is a lot of experience lurking out in the big cloud. I have found the discussion on ops up to 10,000 ft extremely informative as well.
What "little" mistakes should I be not trying to make on my Sav?. As far as the rotax goes I havent ordered my engine yet as I knew it would take me a while to get the aircraft completed and didnt want a new engine sitting around for a year or so. Depending on how I go I hope to be ready for the engine about August or September this year

Hi Ian
I am up at my farm these past few days and will go home tomorrow morning so will be working on the fuselage for a couple of days while still on holidays. I am finding the manual still frustrating but after looking at the diagrams and Reg's pics on his CD many many times you eventually work it out. Since I have been doing the fuse at home work at night for an hour or two and things have been coming along pretty quickly. Will post some more pics when get home I have the bottom and 2 sides on now and about to fit the battery compartment then can put the top on the rear fuselage section. Uploading the pics I think now is easier but you must keep the size od the pics to about 150k each or less otherwise it uploads but it wont store them. My Mac can resize the 3mb pics easily so just make sure you size the pics before uploading. Any issues you find at this stage of getting it ready to fly please let us know

I didn't know Peter at all but I have known Kraivuth for around 10 years or so. As well as being a B777 Captain he started a company called PST Jets www.pstjets.com . This company designed and manufactured model turbine engines also many very well produces model jet kits in Thailand. He helped design funded all the great things that PST have done in the last 10 years or so. I first met him when I was in the Australian team for the Jet World Masters in Thailand in 2001. He actually spent a lot of time here in Brisbane because his brother is a doctor here. I was only speaking to him last year at a model helicoptor event here locally. I am deeply saddened by this news and my condolences go to both families. There is a model jet forum and it is all over the forums about Kraivuth as he is extremely well known world wide as he travelled to most countrys for the model jet events
RIP Peter and Kraivuth

Its been a while since I have done a lot been doing things up at the property and finishing the flaperons when I have had a chance. Also have built a new 4 mtr long sturdy table over here at my house now to build the fuselage. Things should now happen a lot faster as I can now work on it when I get any free moment here also at night now. I have all the parts I have built stored over at the mother in laws place where I built them Just need to transfer the rest of the parts over to here which I will do this weekend.. I started on the main frames last night deburring the edges and holes and painting them last night. A couple of pics to show how I kept the traing edges of the wings and flaperons when I riveted them using the small training edge rivets using alu angle and clamps. This works great it keeps the trailing edges as straight as a die

The Vertex policy I think you ill find is the same. The saving grace (although it may be at a cost) is you can get the radios repaired in another part of the world because they are usually a generic model . This can not be said for some other "well known" brands

Hi Peter
Icom Australia's policy is they will only warrant radios they import and sell and it seems to be this way world wide. Icom America will not warrant radios they do not sell either. "International warrantys" are not a common situation in the electronic market. An example is buy a Nikon camera in Hong Kong and try to get it fixed here by Nikon....no chance. The Rotax warranty is a unusual situation. Rotax themselves tell their dealers if you wont supply a world wide warranty then you do not get a dealership. Icom Japan do not seem to support this type of policy
I could always ask the question for you but I am pretty sure they will not

I have recently put up a new website www.kyle.com.au there is Icom and Vertex airband info there as well as the Brauniger flight panels

Actually there is a fair wind on the nose by the look of it..maybe 15 plus knots you can hear it in the camera audio and a womans blonde hair being blown in fron t of the camera...but still very impressive

HI Michel
Where did you get the cover from for the nav lights? also are you using a pic or Atmel as the micro to do the flashing sequence.. Do you plan to have the controller in the main aircraft or maybe use one of the smaller micros and put all the electronics as self contained in each light?

Hi All
I have been looking around at aviation apps there is heaps of them so not sure on which way to go with them so will be keeping an eye on this thread...I will get a Ipad2 in the next few weeks a 64gb one with 3g..basically will be used in the aircraft most of the time...looking for Nav apps and of course the one locally with all the ersa stuff and maps that looks great

Hi John
Thanks for the tip. I have already fitted those end ribs but I will drill them out and reinforce the inner side of both of them. I havent actually riveted those plates on yet but the ribs are in but will make up some internal plates and get it done

Worked on the left flaperon today almost finished the outer one now with the inboard one done. Just need to rivet the top skin on the outer panel I am really surprised how much time the flaperons have sucked up. All the parts I have made already will stay at my mother in laws place until it comes time to do the final finishing and painting of them . Also building a new work table here at my place getting ready to build the fuselage over here is just over 4 mtrs long and 1.2 mtrs wide it will be around 800mm from the ground to the top surface so its no too tall. I was thinking of bringing the table I made the wings etc on over here but its too high so its quicker and easier to knock up a new table. Will post a few pics of it later. Got to go up the farm next weekend to get the mezzanine floor finished off with all the welding. so after that should have the flaperons finished and can start getting most of the fuselage bits over here and start on them. I will be able to devote a lot more time on it then when its over here

Must be the "S" model with rounded rear fuselage corners

Around 4 years ago I had a opertunity to fly a 737 simulator while I was in NZ. This was a real eye opener. Just how sluggish a 50 ton aircraft is to fly. Yon landing it is a totally different technique required to fly the aircraft. You have to fly it using waggling the controls you need to start movement in a direction then back it off. Its really strange not like anything I have flown before. At normal speed or cruising its just a little slow to react but at slow speed I was stunned at the difference. I would imagine a fighter jet would not be anywhere near as bad as the 737 but as the aircraft gets heavier and larger flying technique is much much different . My dream would be to fly a "pig" as I love that aircraft or maybe a Mig 29 or SU27 but I dare say landing all of these beasts is nothing like GA or RAA this would be the difference and the hardest to get used to. Oh the reason for the post...flying a A380 would be even harder than a 737 I would suspect especially on landing as they are over 400 tons

Import cost
in Sonex
hahahah dazza dont worry I have done that too...I was laughing reading your post because it does bring back all those bad memories...one thing make sure you find out exactly who its coming by UPS (United parcel Service) or USPS (United States postal service) Its a trap although both do have tracking services I have found the USPS service is crap it never seems to find my tracking number but UPS is fine...as I said before always get a tracking number for international shipments then at least you can get someone by the short and curlies at this end and apply the pressure

Import cost
in Sonex
I do a lot of importing from all over the world for my business and personal projects mainly airfreight but this past 2 years I have been doing seafreight LCL for CNC machines which are 850kg each and we all get caught from time to time. My first seacargo shipment I got caught on some of the "extra" costs they dont really tell you about. Airfright by fedex or others is usually pretty seamless but stuff ups can occur at times but it can become a expensive lesson. Rule number 1 in any overseas import is they all have tracking number or waybill numbers and most of the bigger players have tracking sites. I ALWAYS track every parcel or shipment to see where it is because if it has been held up for some reason you will have a exception on the tracking site and you chase it up. When it comes back make sure you get the tracking number and follow it through the process you shouldnt get caught at all then
By dealing with fedex or UPS or DHL or TNT etc they make it easy...it wasnt that long ago when a shipment came you had to front up at customs and do your own entry paperwork complete with all the codes you need...the people behind the counter went out of their way NOT to be helpfull...many will know what I am talking about if they used to do it this way. I now use the fright or import forwarders sevices as it makes for a lot less stress and anger

Dazza
Actually for Fedex to ring you the number string for them is 00 61 7 55620420 or +61755620420 they dont put the 0 in front of the 7 thats why they wont get you...its std international dialling. For that sort of money its pretty steep unless that included the freight cost of course otherwise that over $5000 worth of tools

Try a company called Racetech http://www.racetechsteel.com.au/site/ also Action Aluminium they also sell 6061 T6 in bar and I think in angle as well. I get the bar for some CNC machining I do

Import cost
in Sonex
Actually its more than that
Its the cost of the kit plus the freight cost plus a whole heap of ripoff port charges that amount to a fair amount of money if the container is bought in LCL (loose container load) because you get charged about $105 per cubic metre to have the container unloaded because you can not unload it the port does that as you are not allowed to also you have automated sea cargo charges AQIS charges entry fees customs fees etc etc THEN you add the 10% gst on top of all that. if you have a FCL (full container load) then you will have to get the container delivered to somewhere then you unload it but you will be charged to get that container to that place then you unload it and the container is picked up a short time later

Hi pete
What aircraft are you flying now and have you bought one yet or decided on what to build yet?
