  1. Technically 2- the dragon was not in the CTAF area and was an enroute accident( 6 people). Not good if it's even 1 agreed. 1 flight into non VMC, 1 fail to plan a successful glide and maintain airpeed following EF in cct area, 1 too fresh to know. Of the known 7 fatalities both of these scenarios have been well taught and documented for over 60 years. " Pilots don't find new ways of killing themselves".
  2. Thanks mate, just to clarify- it wasn't our school, but we are all friends up here and very close. Even with a heavy heart, the magic of wings lifted me again today and every time I fly I feel priviledged, happy and amazed at the beauty of flight, the great people and awesome experiences it continues to bring, even amongst the down times- it is my love, my life and an absolute pleasure and priveledge to teach and share the skills and knowledge and joy with all who climb aboard next to me. The birds and the "Wrights" got it right!!
  3. Motz - you raise a good point I've been pondering over the last 24 hrs, running a flight school as well. Firstly the aircraft was RA-Aus registered and used by the owners, and a flight school for training and hire. Secondly to my my knowledge a flight plan as such was not formally lodged, and not required to be, but a verbal "flight note' was left with the operators of the aircraft. Thanks Motz for your comment- we've had a really rough 12 months up here- we live and fly in "God's country" and enjoy many thousands of hours of safe, enjoyable and productive aviation. For those visiting or new to the site I would like to re-iterate that recreational aviation is extremely safe, productive and enjoyable and when well managed in ALL aspects that relate to safety and well being; is safer than crossing the road- Literally. The BURDEN however lies on each of us to ensure ALL aspects of our activity are well managed from the aircraft, the environment, our required skils and our wellbeing. If ANY of these aren't right - DON'T FLY.
  4. In this case. when SAR was activated, ATC had a recorded track log of the transponder of the aircraft, they were able to provide track information up to the time it ceased to be able to transmit a signal due to the aircrafts azimuth and signal coverage ( roughly 800 ft amsl). AMSAR are provided this information when available as a matter of course( another good reason to have a xponder -even without CTA access), this combined with various other "reliable" sources are used to build a search area. Witness reports are considered but often their validity needs to be tested against other known criteria. No 7700 code was transmitted to my knowledge. I simply wish for comfort and care for the friends and family of Dianne in this terrible time of distress.
  5. You won't upset me, but by the high speed responses already fired back I think you won't need a whiz wheel to work out at least some you have!
  6. I would be happy to put you in touch with the instructor and school to answer your question David but fear it may be you who may need some emergency procedures, and fast withdrawals with insinuations like the above. please be mindful what you write, many qualified people, monitor this forum and I can assure you that if you were first in possession of some creditable facts you would be very embarrassed by your question. I would be pleased to conduct your next BFR for free and publish the results for learning and review if you wish.
  7. I live in the middle of the current search grid and can assure you that all efforts are being made to locate the pilot and aircraft. I spoke to local police in the search area on site only 10 mins ago, tomorrow am will most likely reveal an outcome.
  8. For those hangared and parked at Caboolture, I went down yesterday morning to check out our hangars and apart from a bit of under door water on the easterly facing one, all was OK . Standing water was high and it will be very soggy off the defined taxi ways so be careful. Speedy was also down checking on the gliders and making sure they were secured. Gusts were over 50 kts for over 2 hrs yesterday, so may be worth while checking your aircraft closely if it was outside before you next flight. Triple fuel drains also in order for next flight. Hopefully tomorrow.
  9. No worries. There are NO wrong questions! You MAY sometimes get answers that are and you will CERTAINLY get lots of opinions. Welcome.
  10. Phil, this document in recent years has been called "Flight Safety" and if you held an ARN you were sent a copy each month( bi). Due to rising costs this is now an eMag available to download. Latest copy here http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_101296
  11. If you download it to an iPad if you have one you can save it in iBooks and bookmark specific pages for quick reference.I use it for teaching all the time. Technology can be of benefit even for us oldies when you learn how!
  12. I must say I am personally horrified by some of the comments from this thread and will respectfully withdraw further comment for fear of saying something I may regret. I fear for some of the assumptions and misinformation being tabled with regard to aircraft spec, instructor standards, and general guessing. This fails to enhance any learning and would be better served in a British tabloid. No further comment.
  13. Was there an instructor in either of these aircraft Turbo?. My understanding was that the Tecnam at Boonah had a private certificated pilot and his grand daughter in it , and this one? Names not released yet. I would strongly defend the general instructor base in this country, believing, and knowing many have grown up with the ultralight movement and, even the GA industry in Oz and they are stringently tested and reviewed by robust processes in RA. Whether all pilots choose to adhere to the practices taught to them is another matter all together.
  14. That's 2 of these in SEQld in last 3 weeks. Why are perfectly good modern, Rotax powered aircraft coming to grief? Mechanical? Environmental? Or human error? Odds favour the latter....
  15. I know how mine does!!!- And lets not even go there with the wife.....!!!!
  16. MATE!!!- I figured we hadn't seen you round because you were both up at the farm- Well, that wasn't the half of it. All I can say mate is you got the Savvy's Cof G right so this is the perfect chance to get yours:thumb up: right. So glad you got on top of it- push bike laps around the airfield for both of us!!!
  17. Every pilot should understand this.... And fly accordingly.
  18. Footnote- my rego renewal was processed today at midday- Thanks to Darren , Dean, Jill, Middo Et Al, for their work in gettting it through. 2 days grounded.Back working now.
  19. No mate, It's a hard thing to check and neither are due before May, I don't expect problems with either as they conform to a type certificate and were pre- LSA. Starky is a good operator. Just make sure your fitments = whats on your equipment list and that you have all photo's of rego markings, data plates, warning label in cockpit, W&B chart etc and send them in with your renewal. I doubt Brett would have any problems- an ex ROI and sharp as well. Should be good.
  20. In respect of registration, yes, as long as it continues to meet the required airworthiness standards. My post only refers to the changed certification paper work required for these aircraft at time of renewal.
  21. Hey Winsor- NO as of tonight it still has not been processed. My belief is that it sits somewhere now( hopefully near the top) of an ever deepening pile of renewals that need to be processed and finalised to get them flying again. The consultant has to check every one individually and sign off on it before it goes back to the fantastic admin ladies to get the new rego in the mail, and hopefully with an emailed confirmation, which will allow it to fly again. I knew about the actual new audit process months ago, when all this started going down, but you can't pre-request renewal of your aircraft. You can get all your paperwork in order( which mine was) but the new SPECIAL CofA requirement for factory built Savannahs had not been advised to me, by RA-Aus or the distributor. Reg indicated it may have needed to change to LSA, in telephone conversation, but he directed me to RA-Aus. They said that the renewal would be sent out a few weeks before, but couldn't confirm the new requirements. This was only notified to me one day before my rego fell due, even after I had sent my renewal in 2 working days after it was sent to me on December 22nd. If the distributors and RA- Aus would just notify the owners of any changed requirements in the certification of their aircraft then at least as owners we could get on the front foot, as a school aircraft I raised this with the operations manager and at least he put a process request in to have school operators get some priority in the renewal process. I'm not sure if this is happening at this time. But alas this all appears too hard for our industry. You can bitch about CASA all you like- but at least they have their processes in place. A $700 plus rego renewal with RA- Aus for a 1 year old new factory aircraft has got to be getting close to VH costs- you gotta wonder.... I just hope other factory built owners are now aware of this though my posts so, irrespective of the aircraft type, they can at least hopefully become informed before the their rego's fall due. Hope this helps!
  22. and just cast your mind back Nev... 2 years ago all the rage was clear plastic holders for our rego certificates to be highly visible on our aircraft - when if the people who were responsible for this debacle had spent the energy, and our contributions on compliance we wouldn't have this current mess. those plastic holders are emptying at an exponential rate at the moment, as is the faith we have in the current executive and management that has allowed this to happen. Bring on the special GM, I'm sharpening my useless rego card to inflict maximum damage to those responsible( without the plastic wallet)......
  23. Now $550 poorer but with a shiny new CofA, I still have a grounded aircraft, it has cost me business today and tomorrow it will do the same. If its not sorted by Monday the lawyers can chew the legs off those responsible- I'm over it! Recreational Aviation Australia- "wrecking aviation for those who can least afford it"
