I agree pylone500. I would have thought all big turbo fans would have to be geared, those huge fans can't be running at the same rpm as the turbine. Maybe it is a more efficient gearbox. Maybe it is a more efficient gearbox. High bypass turbofans have multiple turbines on concentric shafts driving different sections of compressor/fans.
