I saw this on another forum.. So I thort It'd be fun to start it here.

Post your favourit aviation song here.

Mine are:

Aces High

Iron Maiden

----------------

There goes the siren that warns of the air raid

Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak

Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne

Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines

Remove all the wheelblocks theres no time to waste

Gathering speed as we head down the runway

Gotta get airborne before it's too late

Running, scrambling, flying

Rolling, turning, diving, going in again

Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die

Won't you run, live to fly, fly to live, Aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers

Let off a sharp burst and then turn away

Roll over, spin round to come in behind them

Move to their blindsides and firing again

Bandits at 8 o'clock move in behind us

Ten ME-109's out of the sun

Ascending and turning our spitfires to face them

Heading straight for them I press down my guns.

Rolling, turning, diving

Rolling, turning, diving, going in again

Rolling, turning, diving

Rolling, turning, diving

Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die

Won't you run, live to fly, fly to live, Aces high

The Flight of Icarus

Iron Maiden

--------------------------

As the sun breaks, above the ground,

An old man stands on the hill,

As the ground warms, to the first rays of light

A birdsong shatters the still.

His eyes are a blaze,

See the madman in his gaze.

Fly, on your way, like an eagle,

Fly as high as the sun,

On your way, like an eagle,

Fly and touch the sun.

Now the crowd breaks and a young boy appears

Looks the old man in the eye

As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd

In the name of God my father I fly.

His eyes seem so glazed

As he flies on the wings of a dream,

Now he knows his father betrayed

Now his wings turn to ashes to ashes his grave.

Fly, on your way, like an eagle,

Fly as high as the sun,

On your way, like an eagle,

Fly as high as the sun.

Learning to Fly

Pink Floyd

----------------------

Into the distance, a ribbon of black

Stretched to the point of no turning back

A flight of fancy on a windswept field

Standing alone my senses reeled

A fatal attraction holding me fast, how

Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies

Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings

Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything

No navigator to guide my way home

Unladened, empty and turned to stone

A soul in tension that's learning to fly

Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies

Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,

My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,

Across the clouds I see my shadow fly

Out of the corner of my watering eye

A dream unthreatened by the morning light

Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this

Suspended animation, A state of bliss

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies

Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Van Halen

Dreams

-----------------

World turns black and white

Pictures in an empty room

Your love starts fallin' down

Better change your tune

Yeah, you reach for the golden ring

Reach for the sky

Baby, just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher

Straight up we'll climb

We'll get higher and higher

Leave it all behind

Run, run, run away

Like a train runnin' off the track

Got the truth bein' left behind

Falls between the cracks

Standin' on broken dreams

Never losin' sight, ah

Well just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher

Straight up we'll climb

We'll get higher and higher

Leave it all behind

So baby dry your eyes

Save all the tears you've cried

Oh, that's what dreams are made of

'Cause we belong in a world that must be strong

Oh, that's what dreams are made of

Yeah, we'll get higher and higher

Straight up we'll climb

Higher and higher

Leave it all behind

Oh, we'll get higher and higher

Who knows what we'll find?

So baby dry your eyes

Save all the tears you've cried

Oh, that's what dreams are made of

Oh baby, we belong in a world that must be strong

Oh, that's what dreams are made of

And in the end on dreams we will depend

'Cause that's what love is made of

Foo Fighters

Learn to fly

-------------

Run and tell all of the angels

This could take all night

Think I need a devil to help me

Get things right

Hook me up a new revolution

Cos this one is a lie

We sat around laughing

And watch the last one die

Im looking to the sky to save me

Looking for a sign of life

Looking for something help me burn out bright

Im looking for complications

Looking cos Im tired of lying (trying in 2nd chorus)

Make my way back home

When I learn to fly (high)

Think Im done nursing the patience

I can wait one night

Id give it all away

If you give me one last try

We live happily ever trapped

If you just save my life

Run and tell the angels

That everything is all right

Fly along with me

I cant quite make it alone

Try to make this life my own

(x2)

Sorry if this has already been started

Thanks

My favourite, to the tune of "Those Magnificent Men in the Flying Machines" is ..

"Those magnificent xxxx in the shiny red Pitts

They go up, they go down

They go flying around ..."

Mazda may remember the subject and the origin of the words.

My favorite is the Pink Floyd "Learning to Fly". You can hear a voice doing preflight checks in the background.

I published a video to Youtube yesterday for a mate who features in the clip. I previously had the video up but with a INXS track but they pulled it for a copyright breach for the song. Now it has Pink Floyd but the down side is the the sound of the M14P radial has been mixed out.

I gotta agree with Skykid's first pick "Aces High".

Opening song of the concert they did here in Melbourne last year, with the "Churchill's speech" intro. AWESOME!!

I will stick with "Old Blue Eyes" singing "Come fly with me"

I may be showing my age but Sinatra was possibly the Worlds best male singer. Can't think of a matching flying song by Eartha Kitt.

Anything by Dos Gringos!

They're a bunch of F-16 pilots who aren't to shabby at getting a few "aviation" songs going.

Google they're band name and download a song or two from iTunes or YouTube.

Complete with guitar chords..... it has a lovely slow melody line.

album: One World

song: Flying For Me

artist: John Denver

transcribed: Ken Reynolds

The following song tells of John Denver's love for flight and it

seems fit that his life ended doing what he loved. He will be missed.

Flying For Me

John Denver (klr)

Well, [D] I guess that you probably know by now

I was [bm] one who wanted to fly

I wanted to [G] ride on that arrow of [A] fire right up into [D]

heaven [G] [A]

And I [D] wanted to go for every man

Every [bm] child, every mother of children

I wanted to [G] carry the dreams of all [A] people right up to the

[D] stars [G] [A]

And I [D] prayed that I^Ã’d find an answer there

Or [bm] maybe I^Ã’d find a song

Giving a [G] voice to all the [A] hearts that cannot be [D] heard

[G] [A]

And for [D] all the ones who live in fear

And [bm] all those who stand apart

My being [G] there would bring us a [A] little step closer [D]

together

They were flying for [G] me

They were [A] flying for every [D] one

They were trying to [G] see a brighter [A] day for each and evey [D]

one

They gave us their [G] light

They gave us their [A] spirit and all they could [D] be

[G] They were [A] flying for [D] me

[G] They were [A] flying for [D] me

And I [G] wanted to wish on the [A] Milky Way

And [D] dance upon a falling [bm] star

I wanted to [G] give myself and [G/e] free myself and [G] join myself

with it [A] all

[D] [bm] [G] [A] [D]

Given the [G] chance to dream it [A] can be done

The [D] promise of tomorrow is [bm] real

Children of the [G] spaceship earth

The [A] future belongs to us [D] all

She was flying for [G] me

She was [A] flying for every [D] one

She was flying to [G] see a brighter [A] day for each and every [D]

one

She gave us her [G] light

She gave us her [A] spirit and all she can [D] be

[G] She was [A] flying for [D] me

They were flying for [G] me

They were [A] flying for every [D] one

They were trying to [G] see a brightrer [A] day for each and every

[D] one

They gave us their [G] light

They gave us their [A] spirit and all they could [D] be

[G] They were [A] flying for [D] me (4x)

Dos Gringos - Fighter Pilot Songs for Our Generation - MUSIC

* Songs are "a little" explicit, but they're good drinking songs!

I'm a Pilot

(Dos Gringos)

I walk up to you and I shake your hand

Ask you how your day was. You were up all night? That sucks, I understand

Now hurry the f**k up 'cause I don't want to wait

I'm in a hurry and it's your fault I'm stepping twenty minutes late

Chorus

'Cause I'm a pilot

I only care about me

I don't give a f**k if I bring your jet back

Code 2 or code 3

'Cause I'm a pilot

And I never make mistakes

I'll take the credit if it ain't broken

I'll blame you if it breaks

I don't even know where oil filter lies

But I'll tell you fix it faster goddammit

'Cause I'm the one who flies

And I'll leave FOD in the cockpit without even a trace

Then I'll over-g the targeting pod with a smile on my face

Repeat Chorus

I'll put out some chaff, maybe a flare. Aww f**kit

'Cause when I get back I wanna see you have to replace the whole damn bucket

And the ECM pod that one's my favorite joke

Forget to turn it on? F**k no, it just p**ses me off when something ain't broke

'Cause I'm a pilot and I'm a mean ol' sonafabitch

Yeah I know it sucks that it's all cold and rainy and here I am inside my cockpit all warm and toasty

Hey crewchief! Why don't you get my tapes for me? What? You think I wanna hold this helmet bag all damn day?

I'll p**s on your seat and blame it on a leak

Oh wait, gotta think of something else that's the same excuse that I used last week

When I'm taxiing in do whatever it is you do

You could do a dance, pull down your pants

I don't care I'm not even looking at you

I'm sorry I scratched your jet up, maybe she had an itch

'Cause your baby may have your name on her, but I just made her my bitch

Repeat Chorus

Bigglesworth, I remember that song very well, was a John Denver fan. His concerts gave absolutely full value because he virtually sang without a break and usually went well over time.

John explained in one of his concerts that he'd wanted to be the first civilian in space and NASA had finally agreed to take him up in the Challenger, but there was a hitch and he gave up his seat, and couldn't fly.

The first time I heard "they were flying for me" I remember the hair standing up on the back of my neck as I realised he was singing about the lost Challenger crew.

@Turboplanner,

Glad to hear of another John Denver fan. He had quite a few songs which touched on flying, but I think this was the his ultimate. Although the Eagle and the Hawk is another really good one.

Thanks for the story, I didn't know about that.

I always thought it a tribute to the pioneers of flight, all the people who gave their life in one way or another so that we now have the planes that we have.

This is not a song but a poem. Back in the mid 60s an American flying magazine had a regular column on aviation poetry that ran under the banner of “The Airman’s Worldâ€. This was one of them that really caught my eye. I believe it was written by Richard Bach.

Main Street.

Build me a street the City cried

That is no slave to wind nor tide,

That soars where the mountains rear their pride

That runs to the isles of the farthest sea

And girdles the world entirely.

Build so my lonesome hinter breeds

Can use my Street for their ancient needs

Build so the entire race of Man

May travel in single caravan.

The little gods laughed at the City’s cry

But the Big God cocked his brightest eye

And studied a stretch of the open sky

Where the storm was gone and the sun shone through

And he said to the City this I will do.

Nor will I start with grade or fill

No quarried canyon, nor tunnelled hill

But l’ll draft the will of a youthful mind

With zest to leave the past behind.

And I will plant the seed of an unborn wing

So flimsy few will believe the thing

And I will make it easy for men to die

Who dare to lift themselves so high.

And he said to the City this I will do

So the entire race of Man

May travel in single caravan.

And so it is as the Big God said

Main Street is the one that is overhead

And few are alive if they even try

Today can remember an empty sky.

Anyone got all the words to "A Glider Pilot Bold Was He"? I have forgotten some of the ending so cannot post it - but it was a good traditional (if ribald) little ditty for the club bar.

Treetop Flyer

Treetop Flyer

Written by: Steven Stills

Performed by: Jimmy Buffett

Originally from the Album: Banana Wind (1996)

Lyrics:

[The "Hidden Track"]

I could be a rambler from the seven dials

I don’t pay taxes ’cause I never file

I don’t do bid’ness that don’t make me smile

I love my aeroplane ’cause she’s got style

I’m a treetop flyer

Treetop flyer

I fly any cargo that you can pay to run

The bush league pilots, they just can’t get the job done

You’ve got to fly down the canyon, don’t never see the sun

There’s no such thing as an easy run

I’m a treetop flyer

Treetop flyer

I fly low, I’m in high demand

Go 15 feet over the rio grande

I blow the mesquite right up off the sand

I’m seldon seen, ’specially when I land

I’m a treetop flyer

Born survivor

Now people been askin’ me where’d you learn to fly that way

Was over in vietnam, chasin’ the nva

The government taught me, and they taught me right

Stay down below the treeline and you’ll be alright

I’m a treetop flyer

Born survivor

So I’m comin’ home, I’m runnin’ low and fast

Promised my woman this is gonna be my last

I get the ship down, I tie her fast

And then some old boy wakes up, and he says, "hey son,

Wanna make some fast cash? "

I’m a treetop flyer

Well there’s things I am

And there’s things I am not

Yes I’m a smuggler and I could get shot

I ain’t gonna die, I ain’t going to get caught

You see I’m a flying fool, and this aeroplane is, whoo, hot

I’m a treetop flyer

Born survivor

Workin’ alone
