1. Went for a fly this morning and heard a conversation where Centre said "You have entered controlled airspace, you probably should descend". Reply was I am over cloud - can I have a clearance at this altitude?" "OK, cleared to maintain 5,200 and let us know when you can descend. Have initiated flight following. Do you need any help?" "No thanks, all OK" and a few minutes later "We are away from cloud, request clearance to descend OCTA"

    All very friendly and unstressed.

I've noticed more and more flying activity if late, perhaps we've had enough of the tyranny??

  2. The ground is quite wet, it just looks dry because no weeds have been allowed to grow, timely spraying.

The tractor is a 1996 model so current value only about 50k aud, only 6400 hours with no overhauls on any components. Just like an old aircraft it can go on for many more years with simple maintenance. It sits in the shed every year for 11 months with no starting. Seeder is about 10yo and worth about 50k. A new rig like this would be north of $400k.

    Apologies for the thread drift

Remind me not to come back in my next life as a farmer!? No need to apologise for a thread drift, hardly think we would be ostracised for creating such angst??

  3. This sounds like code for "not this year". I guess timely production is not such a consideration if one still gets paid even if there is no production. In farming no production equals no pay so we tend to do things in a very timely way. You will all be relieved to know that farmers are continuing to work normally in the covid-19 climate and food will be available. Planting some bread and cooking oil.

Sheeez I'd hate to imagine how much that machinery costs?

  4. How is the virus situation making more work for CASA? With a lot less people flying, less maintenance and hardly any airlines flying what are they so busy with? Has CASA stood down a lot of staff?

......remember safe skies are M/T skies, achieving that takes a lot of man & brain power!? So far their work is being handed to them on a plate!

  5. My Aeroclub committee has written to local Federal and State MPs reiterating contents of AOPA letter to PM and asking for approval to conduct maintenance flights one-up to comply with engine manufacturers’ Recommendations.

suggest as many as possible do likewise.

Such correspondence will only fall on deaf ears sadly! Whilst it's not illegal to fly yr plane it won't look good to the ground lubbers who will complain!

  6. I still love the Alice Springs hills and trees and empty spaces. It's part of my dreaming and you don't have to be black to have a dreaming.

To this day, I don't understand why some people like cities and crowds. I look at a football crowd with horror, but nearly all the people there have chosen it.

I tend to agree, the ghettos that the cities have are just awful, people are welcome to it! True peace comes from hearing/seeing nature, I'm so glad I don't live in a cesspool!?

  7. When you are determining the safety of a system for controlling some piece of apparatus you have to look at each part of that system and them calculate the probability big failure. Should the probability be low then a physical inspection of the system is required at a frequency that is significantly shorter than the failure probability. If for example you have a control system that keeps the altitude constant and uses a human that can only see an altimeter, nothing from outside then you have to put 0.5 as the probability of his failure. If an electronic control system is used to keep the altitude then the system usually calculates a fairly low probability of failure. So an inspection/testing regime will be developed. Hopefully an inspection is calculated to be greater than 100hours.

I did a lot of work with TMR (tri modular redundant) system uses three computers checking each other and all three must agree to execute a control function. These systems of have a reliability of one failure every million operating hours. I designed these systems for gas turbines.

Oh that's way to difficult to think about, life can be made simple or hard, your choice???

  8. I say this anti-bureaucratic thing as a South Australian. Here in South Australia, things are so bad that a Victorian company changed its mind about expanding into South Australia. At the time, our premier Weatherall defended the bureaucracy, in this case the roads lot.

Mind you, there are a couple of good things in the bleak outlook.. our absence of yearly vehicle inspections for one.

I have a mate of mine who owns a mech repair shop on SA, he says it sure shows that SA don't have annual vehicle inspections!

  9. Mate, I have been riding motorbikes for over 50 years, I still have 6 of them here in the shed! From a Vespa 300 GTS Super Scooter to a BMW 1200 HP2 Enduro! Some soon to go for replacement with aircraft parts!

I also had bikes for about 30 years, sold 'em off when worked for an organisation that scraped up off the road too many temporary citizens!

Each to their own when it comes to risk.

  10. My aeroplane is VH registered and I am pretty sure that CASA stipulates that if an engine is going to be idle for more than 30 days it must be inhibited, therefore running the engine can be considered essential!

Plenty of people out flying under the guise of maint flights, owners are responsible for keeping the A/C airworthy, I support their actions using common sense! After that you can go play golf, go fishing but NOT in Vic, you are a criminal, go figure??

  11. I don’t call some 20 dead off one cruise ship a success, ALL those cruise ships should have anchored off Christmas Island and a full blown Corona Virus treatment hospital set up there. I, like many others would not have to look hard to have improved the handling of the current situation In many ways.

Too true now we are ALL paying for it with a country now in ruin!
