  1. Point taken, as a trike pilot, I see no harm for a trike pilot to learn three axis and three axis pilot should learn two axis seat of your pants flying to appreciate the skill required. And in a perfect world pilots should learn to fly gliders and aerobatics. APA is no badge of honour just training. I've also met revenue raising instructors and I don't go back again, the majority of instructors I've had have been fantastic. I like everything that flies !
  2. No pilot will ever know it all ! What will hurt you is what you don't know ! If you think getting the basic knowledge and that's enough then something may hurt you ! I have taken extra lessons for many reasons including HGFA, AUF, GA, conversion type, GA BFR, RAA instructor training and ongoing Flight reviews for a SI rating, I have a APA and it's not a badge of honour but a sign I have had extra training and am competent and interested in not getting hurt ! Those who want to bag instructors should take notice of what they go through to get their qualification and then the experience to teach ! I've met lots of big mouths and some write on this forum, of the ones I have met some have bent planes, it was no surprise as their attitude was not right, if your not prepared to keep learning or listening to others with experience then you may get hurt ! If I lived near Poteroo I would take a few lesson for the heck of it, he is very unique as he has been flying and teaching a long time ! I met him at a conference and he was a gentleman and had a lot to offer, I'm proud he writes here with his valuable opinion. Remember the sayings, " there are old pilots and bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots ". " learn from other people's mistakes because you won't live long enough to learn from your own " You can buy training but you can't buy experience that comes with practice and time.
  3. I'm almost sure that the RAA insurance policy says it pay $250K max for any claim and max for any single incident or accident ! So if you don't have your own insurance you need to read the policy carefully.
  4. Thankyou very much and am very interested, the Subaru diesel interest me a lot and have looked at weight, revs and power curve , I realize that it is not ideal without modification of motor or reduction, the weight is a problem and really don't know what you can chuck away to lighten, I don't know anyone who is playing with one but the style of engine is ideal for an aircraft, very interested in your thought and ideas. Thanks in advance. I'm a diesel man for sure but not a test pilot.
  5. Very interested in your diesel aircraft, can you please tell me more ?
  6. A C172 has a lot of drag with full flap 40deg and does not want to take off ...it will fly but very slow and hardly climb, the manual says return to 20 deg immediately for be able to climb from memory ! I don't think it could effect rudder directional control ! Look forward to other comments ! By the way with 40deg and carb heat on I don't think it will get off the ground unless it was a very cool day at sea level.
  7. Having different instructors once qualified is good to get different techniques but during ab-inito training I think the same instructor is important ! My thoughts only ! Hope your not learning with kids learning to shave !
  8. Nicely said Alf, as an old trike pilot I appreciate the equipment and its pros and cons, what some people don't seem to appreciate what various wings are designed to take advantage of and what their disadvantages are ! When I was flying trikes the Wizard wing was just introduced ! A very different wing from the other wing !
  9. Don't worry Simon Mo, I learnt with a very thorough and excellent instructor but what I didn't realize he expected a very, very high standard and said many times that he wanted all his students to stay alive. I also lived in a mountainous area ! The problem was I didn't go solo until 25 hours, depressing yes ! but thankful now, have been in many situations that required calm skilful handling and decisions. I'm now an instructor and I tell students I expect a high standard and I make no excuses and tell them I want them to stay alive. The time required or to say in a much better way the skills required are not all achieved in the pre licence period ! I would never frown on anyone for their learning time unless they were outright dangerous ! Meet a few with licences ! Good luck and enjoy the journey ! You will be a better pilot for it, and live !
  10. Lose pilots who are getting lazy and not landing right, force them to land right and not on the nose, there are a lot weaker nose legs around, not meant for landing on, only to steer at very very low speed at about 5 knots the rudder does the work and nose wheel should have no weight on it ! The problem does not exist, lazy pilots exist, instructors who allow pilot to get away with bad landings is not on. Seen plenty of bad landing done and the pilot thought it was good, I've never done a bad landing on purpose but not all are perfect. My point is some people accept bad landings as normal ! You think your going to land a tail wheel aeroplane easier ? Those pilots I speak of will have little or no chance !
  11. I trained people on the MORGAN SIERRA and it has its characteristics but not that it needed any alteration, pilots who tried to three point it with a castering nose wheel were going to get into trouble no matter what ! the fuel tank when full made it nose heavy but still not a problem to flare on landing. I saw someone bend a nose leg and it was a shocker of a landing driving it straight down on the nose leg, Correct landing does not hurt the nose leg and for those that land any aircraft three point or on the nose expect damage or problems ! The Sierra flys beautifully and has very stable characteristics and has a great top speed and a low stall speed, it also can be a bit floaty on landing due to the low stall speed encouraging pilots to drive it on TO THE NOSE LEG !!!!! The plane is a great design and a pleasure to fly, it may have some improvements that could be made but name something that doesn't ! I enjoyed flying the plane very much and always felt safe. I have enough hours in these aircraft to consider my comments very valid also I'm suitably qualified to comment and speak the honest truth. Modify the aircraft to suit low performance pilots is not the way ! it is train pilots to perform properly ! ,
  12. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2237748 Refer to this article, you may find it interesting. Also. O.P. Important Quality Message From Ryco RYCO OIL FILTERS: Made in Indonesia Z386, Z432, Z442, Z445 and Z547 As a precautionary measure, we request that you identify and cease to fit any Ryco branded oil filters with a part number Z386, Z432, Z442, Z445 or Z547 that were manufactured in Indonesia. The country of origin can be found on the bottom of the inner carton. If you have any of this product please call Ryco Customer Service on 1800 804 541 and we will make arrangements with you to have the defective stock swapped at no cost to you. Last year GUD Automotive experienced a minor quality issue across a limited batch of 65mm diameter spin on oil filters manufactured in Indonesia. The result of the issue was that some filters could weep oil from around the seam of the filter. As the market leader in Automotive Filtration Ryco takes its product quality very seriously. GUD is taking every possible measure to ensure that all suspect stock is removed from the market. All stock of these part numbers shipped from GUD Automotive since October 2009 has been 100% certified. This stock has a country of origin of China so please do not return this stock. GUD have undertaken significant investigations into the cause of this defect and are confident that the issue will not reoccur. Generally if this defect occurs it represents an inconvenience for vehicle owners and fitters, and based on our analysis it is extremely unlikely that engine damage will occur. Should any vehicle in the field exhibit an oil leak then this should be handled through the Ryco warranty policy. A full Ryco warranty statement can be found in the Ryco catalogue or on our website www.rycofilters.com.au We apologise for any inconvenience caused and you can rest assured that Ryco is committed to providing high quality genuine performance filtration solutions. 13. Hi, I'm in possession of lots of letters and I was the person who got the FOI from Casa, my information has been shared with RAA and other Interested parties including people with special interest, I have also letters from other government agencies where complaints were lodged. I can share info with you if you can do something of a positive action in support of the Australian aviation industry before it is COMPLETELY FINISHED ! If you can't or won't do anything then I will not bother as I'm sick of what Casa and government has done.
  14. You have reassured my faith in good piloting, airmanship and public relations ! Ol mate Ryan complained to CASA ! Can you believe it ! How long, Slope, surface and surroundings is Orchid Beach ? Let alone long grass ?
  15. He nearly killed himself and wants to blame some one else ! You are a not capable of any discision making obviously ! You are absolutely correct in what you have said young fella ! This time ! You have no reason to say sorry ! If you don't speak up he may never learn what is really happening !
  16. If it unsafe to take off then it is YOUR responsibility and only a FOOL would take off knowing it was unsafe. I think you are a dangerous pilot Ryan and need to learn why people close airstrips and forbid people to land without permission, an ALA is for the pilot to access whether it is safe for them to land with their TYPE of aircraft. I am unimpressed with your attitude and skill and suggest you do some research before landing at any strip and DO NOT take off if it is unsafe.
  17. The trouble with youth it is wasted on the young ! A lesson on history could be well spent talking to people who saw it happen ! Some people know more about nothing than others !
  18. The instructor mentioned the key thing about not trying to fight the turbulence and that is the point ! I'm sure he will explain it well ! Like I said, good on you for doing it for the experience and I'm sure most would not fly in a westerly of 30knots at Wollongong. I have experienced many turbulent days and I avoid it as much as I can now, I think I know what it is like inside a washing machine
  19. It also was what I was thinking, I was glad you were keen to do turbulence which I think was a great idea and I think what I saw was all good and I think you have a very good instructor although Im biased as I know him and you are a good student for wanting to do what you did. I would suggest that doing a refresher on adverse yaw to understand the effect of the correction of the controls make to the plane especially in turbulence. Again what is in the video is fine but a good understanding of adverse yaw is often forgotten as it is an early lesson. Great video and keep it up, I hope my view is of benefit to you.
  20. When 40 deg of flap extended on a c172 N I do not believe it is possible to exceed VFE ! I'll stand to be corrected but I couldn't do it and tried !!!!!
  21. My statement was from memory from a long time ago, I sold my 172 8 years ago , I remembered the Poh reference to avoiding side slips with flaps ! Thanks DJP and happy for putting facts here.
