  1. LSA was introduced in 2006 in Australia, this copy of some history may help. The immediate task of the AUF was to develop Operation Regulations for ultralight aircraft and to address the relatively high accident rate that existed in these early years. It must be remembered that at that time ultralights were restricted to single seat aircraft, which meant that it was illegal to be taught to fly in an ultralight, and they had a maximum operational height limit of 300 feet above ground level. This was exacerbated by the fact that ultralights of the day had extremely limited flight envelopes, occasional stability problems and somewhat less than reliable engines. As an emergency means of addressing the training issue, the Civil Aviation Authority introduced CAO 95.25 in 1985, which provided for factory built certified single place and two place ultralights and to allowed the two seaters to be used as training aircraft for the 95.10 pilots. This was a significant milestone in Australian ultralight aviation and enabled the AUF to set up an ultralight training scheme and encourage the establishment of ultralight training facilities.
  2. Texan is LSA I believe. You should check the difference.
  3. My Sportstar is not an LSA but a certified ultralight plane and is allowed to operate with the in flight adjustable prop. LSA aircraft have a problem as the prop must have an ASTM to be allowed from the manufacturer. Anyone wishing an inflight adjustable prop endorsement can do it in their own home built or in a Certified ultralight such as mine.
  4. RAA can issue In Flight Adjustable Propellor endorsements, I train with a a certified ultralight Sportstar with an adjustable prop and issue the ( AP ) endorsement through RAA.

  7. Good on You... Go for it Bexrbetter, look forward to seeing it, you are doing something positive, a lot more than others. I like anyone having a go, and that is the real Aussie way " having a go " but always the knockers doing nothing, if it has some Australian content that's a bonus. I myself like the idea of the Subaru Diesel or a copy, it would make a great aero engine if it could be direct drive to reduce weight. What do you think ?
  8. A lot of info here . http://www.australianflying.com.au/news/dragons-of-the-downwind-turn
  9. Just to state the obvious in case anyone missed it, the aircraft was well and truly airborne say 100 feet over the parked aircraft, on return he touched down at where the aircraft was parked so my point is if the strip length was shorter he may not have made it given he had everything in his favour include no weight i.e. passenger. Also in strong wind there is advantage to get back but the chance of stalling in turn much higher plus a much faster ground speed. ( referring to steep turns downwind if someone has a easy explanation for the inexperienced so they may understand the danger of the downwind turn in strong wind. Please do so. )
  10. I have just started with ozrunways, there are plenty of tutorials on Youtube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIrnTlnTQB4 this one at 1.30 shown how to pick a location, do you think this is what is meant ?
  11. Thank you for your willingness to write to the (FUTURE) transport minister as this is the only way to sort things out in my opinion. I can say to all RAA and GA Pilots that years ago I wrote to a Former Transport minister and Prime Minister over the National Airspace Reform and action did happen and I believe all the people who wrote brought about the required safety changes. Stamp your feet and write letters and tell them how it is with Casa, if Casa was interested in Safety there would be a lot of changes but they try to work out how they can take back control of RAA as GA is in serious decline, casa staff will not have a job if the decline in GA continues.
  12. It will no longer be called the Cockpit but the Box Office.
  13. I've noticed the instructor forum has not been a major success and I feel I saw that coming, if it were more like an advise or question forum it would be a helpful tool and where instructors could share tales of common faults. Instructors could register with the site and use names that will not associate them with any school as I know very well that instructor don't always agree on certain things, my dream as a student pilot was to ask a question to all the instructors I ever did a lesson with and then leave and lock the door and let them fight. I trained HGFA, AUF and GA, all are keen to bag the others. It would be good if some students could ask question and get answers from a wide range of experience that is on this site. Just a thought.
  14. Hi , In case you don't know, for aluminium you need acid neutral products, Maguires have an auto wash that is acid neutral, not the wash and wax one, its available at most auto shops including supa cheap. It works ok.
  15. Hi, Fuel, food and accommodation can be expensive accross the Nullabor, I found Mundrabila roadhouse to be very reasonable and enjoyed the stay, we put the plane outside the motel room and fuelled at the premium unleaded bowers, at the time avgas was a dollar dearer, avgas was not available at Mundrabila. Dinner and beer was reasonable as well. Across the Nullabor there are gravel and dirt runways and tracks and was difficult avoiding stone damage to the prop , do run-ups on the go.
  16. Here is another video he posted which I watched first, The fact it is a motor glider is a big difference.
  17. I was shocked to see some one teaching this and putting it on you tube, read the comments, I do not approve but thought it was worth sharing. Also it is a motor Glider.
  18. Hi Andy, what instrument do you speak of as I am wanting such an instrument ? I was going to buy a Dynon D6 and next year will need a mode S transponder and was undecided at this stage. I was keen on the D6 for the AH, ALT, VSI and compass which is doubling up on a few things ,
  19. EPIRB or PLB required if travelling away from base.
  20. I wish to make a point that I have flown the Cougars that have been built to date and know Gary well enough to say he is a Gentleman and a great designer/ builder, also the Cougar is a a well behaved with good low and high speed performance and does not disappoint. I have flown many types and look forward to seeing and flying anything that Gary builds or designs. Go fly with him, he is a good pilot and a good honest bloke. He has been in Ultralights a long time and in Gliders for a very long time and when not doing that he has a few model planes. If you have doubts ask to fly the Cougar you will be amazed at its low speed performance and then at high speed it is very comfortable, a nice plane. I hope I get an invite to fly a Lycoming powered Cougar Mk II . I have over 60 hours in Morgan Sierras and like them very much, but the truth be known I am a high wing man and have owned a C172 for nine years before I sold it for a RAA plane.
  21. So is CASA trying to back date their right to approve something and say it doesn't meet the standard even though we said it meet the standard at the time. Paper shuffling noddies who know more about nothing than most people !
  22. . If the manufacturer certifies the plane as LSA meeting the ASTM, should CASA not ask the manufacturer to provide documentation if required not telling RAA they need to do something and tell owners, it also states during a recent Casa audit, and they just introduced the ASTM standard for IFA propellors where there wasn't one before. Quote RAA " If you own or operate a Light Sport aircraft fitted with an in-flight adjustable propeller please contact the RAAus Technical Consultant ". Only the manufacturer of aircraft or Propeller could provide the standards or testing the prop meets and can provide to Casa and they need to be nice to the manufacturer not put him out of business and leave the owner of an aircraft grounded. CASA say proposal to include but RAA says CASA said they did not provide documentation. CASA needs to talk to the team again, including Aircraft manufacturers and the other organizations that participated in setting up LSA rules. Ouote CASA document: There is now an ASTM propeller standard, but this is for Fixed pitch and ground adjustable propellers only. Quote from CASA document : So what standard do we use for inflight adjustable or constant speed propellers?  Proposal to include all the known standards for propellers in the AC, for example FAR 35 or CASR 35  We are also exploring the possibility of applying the EASA standards as we accept LSA aircraft from other countries provided they have been accepted by another NAA
  23. Sent an email already to Casa. Will do some more homework first to get the facts
  24. The reason I put the Corvette link was to see if anyone thought it was worth challenging Casa for changing rules that were clearly adopted in Australia for LSA by a project team consisting of CASA specialist, representatives from each of the sporting Orgs, Australian manufacturers and CASA authorised persons (AP)." I wonder if these people that prepared the rules, object to Casa changing them without consultation ? My major objection is it does not appear to be safety related and LSA has been in for 7 years so why all of a sudden de-rail the system and make people comply to a new rule that was allowed earlier. Back dating on earlier aircraft is not right is it ? , Which aircraft manufacturers participated in LSA rules ? Who was RAA CEO and Tech manager in 2005 and 2006, did they participate in the rule making ? If They accept types at the time, how can they make a change when the authorities that made the rules accepted them which they were part of. ? I remember the first LSA being a Sportstar in WA. So what about the ones that have lost the right to sell an LSA aircraft that did a lot of work ? I find this a little crazy, is it a couple of ex RAA people destroying what many worked so hard for ? Does Casa really know what it is doing ?
