  1. See if you can at least go up as passenger with some of the other pilots and perhaps practice you navigation techniques.
  2. I have a good relationship with the three who own the hangar. If they felt the rates need to go up, they would put that to me. No the extra plane needed to go somewhere and so my hangar was picked. I have since been informed it has a new home (thank Christ). I would buy a hangar tomorrow but Gawler airstrip may not be around in a few years, greedy developers can make zillions out of all that land. I would need a written guarantee the airstrip will be there for another ten years.
  3. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/one-killed-in-plane-crash-near-murray-bridge/story-e6frea83-1226256455890 An update....
  4. Just curious, how long do you go between flights? I like to fly at least once a fortnight, even if it's just a few touch-n-goes. Once a week is even better. I have not flown since before Xmas due to circumstances beyond my control. I'm starting to get the shakes.
  5. Amberly is a military airbase. The Royal Australian Air Force's RAAF Base Amberley is our largest base, employing over 3500 people. It is 40kms south-west of Brisbane on the outskirts of Ipswich. A large number of units call Amberley home: Combat Support Group Combat Support Unit Amberley - base managers No 395 Expeditionary Combat Support Wing No 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron No 396 Expeditionary Combat Support Wing Detachment Amberley Airfield Defence Wing No 1 Airfield Defence Squadron - Airfield Defence Guards No 2 Airfield Defence Squadron - Airfield Defence Guards [*]Health Services Wing 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron Health Operational Conversion Unit [*]Reserve Training Wing No 23 Squadron [*]No 44 Wing Detachment Amberley - air traffic control [*]No 82 Wing - strike and reconnaissance No 1 Squadron - F/A-18F Super Hornet Fighter No 6 Squadron - F/A-18F Super Hornet Fighter No 4 Squadron - Pilatus PC-9/A Trainer [*]No 36 Squadron - C-17 Globemaster heavy transport aircraft [*]No 33 Squadon - KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport [*]No 87 Squadron - photography [*]No 278 Squadron - flight simulator and technical training [*]No 1 Airfield Operations Support Squadron - airfield engineering [*]RAAF Security and Fire School - security, fire-fighting and military working dog training
  6. Often when I open my mouth, I put my foot in it (I'm pretty flexible for an old fart). Having said that I just wonder how much thought, calculation and expertise has gone into Solomon's plane. Building something like a plane ain't like knocking together a billy cart, one can get pretty perished if things go wrong. How does anybody know what stresses it can endure? What's it stability? Stall characteristics? Has it been modeled on a known design.
  7. Wow, I thought I had weird dreams. Never had one about websites! I did have one where I was flying my old EH Holden around, landing in the street and picking up me mates.
  8. Struth! Didn't think of that. (The accent transmitted depends on where the radio was purchased).
  9. I am convinced some pilots deliberately put on weird, hard to understand accents with some strange, deluded idea they sound 'cool'. I even knew a guy once (not a pilot) that used an American accent whenever he used a two-way radio.
  10. Hi. Be aware that down here it's all inverted flight (being under the planet) so make sure your esky has a lockable lid lest the beers fall out.
  11. Hi. That looks like North East NSW to me!!!!
  12. Can you give us a location? North West NSW is a big area! I could do it from Gawler using Broken Hill as a fuel/dunny stop.
  13. Yes, a pelican once shot past me at 1000' AGL near Blanchetown (SA). Had that come through the windscreen of my Jab it would have stung a bit.
  14. If anybody is interested, a great read is "Boy Phoenix" - a biography of a South Australian Aviator who may not be as well known as he should be. James Melrose (The town of Melrose, Melrose Park and a few streets are named after him) flew in the early 1920s and 1930s. He lived in a rather large house at Glenelg, on the esplanade, there is a small thingo there in his honor. Not a huge book, should keep you off the streets for a week or two.
  15. Great isn't it! Just remember, you may not be the only one out there, so, eyes out the cockpit.....
  16. The last time I flew in hot conditions I hit a few air pockets that felt exactly the same as driving ones car at 100kph into a gutter. The stress on the plane must have been one million g's. Nowadays, I stay on the ground when it's hot, gusty or otherwise crappy and watch others fly while I have a beer or two. (or coffee if it's not beer drinking weather).
  17. Yes, climbed up on top of the cupboards, dug out my Warrior PA28 books and had a read. Silly me.
  18. Okay, I have pilot=80kgs, baggage=10kgs and fuel=70kgs. Using the info in the POH I have 80 x 297 = 23760, 10 x 920 = 9200 and 70 x 451 = 31570. Dividing the sum of the moments by the sum of the weights; 64530/160 = 403.3 Now 320kg empty weight + 80kg pilot + 10kg baggage + 70kg fuel = 480kg. The intersection of 480kg and the resultant arm of 403.3 is way, way ouside the CofG envelope. What am I doing wrong???
  19. Seems to me he made no effort to respond to the stall horn, which comes on before the stall occurs.
  20. My knowledge of meteorology is limited to what I studied as a PPL. Having said that I cannot see how wind farm turbulence could affect precipitation downstream. In the meantime, I shall treat my brain as a sponge ready to soak up any reasonable explanation as to how this could be happening.
  21. Oh Dear, I own a Jab J170 and hate hearing bad news...
  22. Sherlock looks a lonely spot (looked it up on Google Earth). 300 meters is a bit short for me and my Jabiru J170. Maybe an arrestor hook can be installed?
  23. No wonder there is such a wind, the huge fans on the hills in the background are running!!!
  24. Why not? I think it's a reasonable question to ask things based on gender. Don't let PC scare you folks, ask, refute, deny and agree as you feel you should.
  25. Does knowing exactly where you're not mean you're not lost?
