  1. I've just read the offending piece. Nancarrow's one example of RAA poor airmanship is based on hearsay and does have a ring of improbability about it. Where outside CTA did the writer get a radar vector that brought him down to circuit height and a specific runway alignment??. More likely he was brought to minimum safe where it was up to him to visually identify the active runway and communicate with other traffic. Most probably the RAA aircraft was much slower than the IFR beast and therefore had much greater need to ensure that it was set up to land into wind and consequently is the most likely to have the correct circuit direction. I would not be surprised if the complete story was a spot of over confident arrogance on the part of the IFR aircraft who failed to change to the CTAF freq when leaving radar's control and who came barreling in to land in the same direction that he always does. Fortunately he took his eyes off the clocks in time to see the poor unfortunate RAA craft ( Drifter ? ) in time.
  2. Don't be too tough on Tomo He IS above average. the average is one and a bit legs
  3. Radio part seems AOK to me. The 500 ft circuit for 55kts and slower aircraft seems OK however circuit entry for slower aircraft is not well addressed and in all the diagrams of circuit patterns there is no clear indication as to how slow aircraft should enter the pattern. Over fly at 2000 and then descend to 500? or enter mid field at 500? it is not clear for either the slow aircraft operator nor for others as to what to expect from the slow aircraft. at least that's the way that I read it Davidh
  4. Send a PM to gregrobertson on this site he is the new agent for Skyranger aircraft in Australia Davidh
  5. CASA Commonwealth aviation Safety Authority not Commonwealth Aviation Support Authority. CASA's remit is aviation safety and nothing else. The safest aircraft is one that is shut up in the hangar The next safest is turbine powered, multi crewed and LAME serviced. RAA aircraft are a way down on the safety list. A major point in that presentation is the concept of "unacceptable risk to the non participants" Pilot A with his RAA certificate ( not a pilot's license) puttering along at 55kts in his 300kg aircraft one could argue presents an acceptable risk to the non participants. Pilot B also without a pilot's license tearing along at 120 kts in his 600kg aircraft presents a totally different risk potential to the non participants. My fear is that when a some one fitting pilot B's description crashes into a house the coroner will have serious words with CASA about the lack of license and the lack of LAME supervision. Past experience would suggest that when a SAFETY organisation is put under that kind of criticism they will react with a set of new draconian regulations. Regulations and restrictions that could remove many of the features we currently enjoy. The closer we get to GA type operations the closer we are to being subject to GA regulations. dem's my thoughts davidh
  6. Coleman petrol stove is great. designed for unleaded. Works OK on AVGAS but over time the lead clogs up the generator tube which will need replacing.

  13. With reference to Castrol GPS my understanding is that Castrol changed the formulation but not in all markets and it was as a result of those changes that Rotax removed it from their recommendation list. Davidh

  16. .there is an image of an Avro Lancaster flying over Stukeley Meadows, Huntingdon, England, as originally spotted it appears by a chap on Google Earth Community who lives just about right under the aircraft's position when Google Earth's satellite captured this snap. The Lancaster in question is the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's "City of Lincoln." The image is at 52 20 10.87N 0 11 43.34W, or right here (Google Earth KMZ link). ®
  17. "Ah yes, but wait till you come to the Queen's Land" said Tomo "Thats a different story........... But before we get to that different story here is an Important announcement. Henceforth it is to be mandatory for all RAA Pilots whilst in command of an RAA aircraft to wear at all times the RRA Current Certificate Compliance Cap This cap to be issued in a new colour each registration year and will bear in letters big enough to be read at 20 paces the expiry date of the pilot’s certificate. The board of RAA after prolonged and meaningful consultations with the department of homeland security have determined that this is the most appropriate action available to them to combat the increase in non compliance with pilot certificate currency requirements. When the consultant’s report in exchange for $30,007.86 indicated that the system could be liable to manipulation by persons other than the registered owner of the Current RAA CAP a auto compliance component was added to the scheme for a mere $78.34 per Current RAA CAP per year. This modification entails an inbedded DNA dector chip that will, on detecting, the scalp of other than the registered owner, cause the cap to spontaneously conflagrate. When submitted to the OH&S consultants, they identified after only 7 months of serious consultation that a potential a potential hazard to persons was identified. Consequently it has been determined that all wearers of a Current RAA CAP must also wear a fire resistant Nomex balaclava under their Current RAA CAP. Your board confidently presents to you this scheme in the interest of safer, recreational flying. All heil to the Current RAA CAP
