Myth busting! I MIGHT STALL IF I TURN DOWNWIND!
Thirsty replied to Ultralights's topic in Student Pilot & Further Learning
One of my favourite " it depends on your point of reference examples" was from a book written by someone attempting to make Einstein's theories easier to understand. We all know nothing can travel faster than the speed of light right? So I'm standing here and a spaceship zooms past me doing 10Knots slower than the speed of light. Inside that spaceship, at the rear, a kid throws a baseball towards the front of the spaceship at 11Knots. To him the ball is travelling at 11Knots but to me the ball is travelling at the speed of light + 1 knot. Not a very practical example and the ball can only travel "faster than the speed of light" for as long as the spaceship is but it makes you think. -
Got my unrestricted L2 accreditation today
Thirsty replied to Thirsty's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Thanks guys. Signed off my first 100 hourly - feels good but also makes you realise the responsibility as well. I have no-one to blame now but myself! Also transitioned to the right hand seat this week - starting my instructor's rating. If you want to feel like a student again just fly from the RHS, very different! -
Just wanted to share with everybody. Very happy as I got my unrestricted L2's today. I just want to publicly acknowledge Recreational Pilot's Academy at Murray Bridge SA (James in particular) for letting me work on the 'fleet' and getting my skills back up to a safe level.

On another subject - I'm wanting to install miopocket on the flash ram on my device and remove the OEM software. I never intend to use the installed operating system and want to run oziexplorer only. Has anyone done this? I have ozi installed with miopocket lite and it works OK but the installed software sometimes takes over when I don't want it to - very annoying.

http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/nikon-d3100-twin-kit-with-nikon-18-55mm-vr-and-55-300mm-vr-lenses-digital-slr-cameras.html add on about $50 for shipping. Of course the problem with buying online is warranty - ie you don't really have any unless you pay to ship the camera back to the supplier - maybe. Here's a good camera review site as well - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3100/
-
Cheapest on the internet I reckon - http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/ Of course warranty would be an issue but the price is right. Bought my daughter the twin lens E620 twin lens from this site - camera arrived very quickly. Can't really advise on the best camera though 'cause I have no idea about cameras - was just buying what I was told to :)

Ginger works for my wife. I reckon it's mostly anxiety though! On out recent trip to Temora she was fine, even through the bumpy stuff because I made her relax - helps a lot. If you're uptight and stressed you'll probably find it's worse. You really need to try and relax and just remember you're doing this for fun!

I just converted my MY60T Navman. Works great but I'd recommend MioPocket Lite for those that just want the Oziexplorer app. MioPocket has way too much stuff in it if all you want is the moving map application.

Yes true but if I can use the 12V A/C power i can save that expense :)
-
A little out of my range unfortunately!
-
Thanks guys. I understand the pricing principle but I hate relying on batteries :) The headsets at Temora I was talking about seemed to be a kind of DIY setup in a tent near the Jab display. They were $399 and seemed like pretty good quality.
-
Thanks. I was hoping to find a set that allowed plugging into the aircraft 12V supply.
-
Can you somehow use external power instead of using batteries?
-
Thanks for the writeup. I'm also in the market for an ANR headset. I tried the ANR headset at Temora the guy near the Pilot Shop was pushing. Never tried ANR before but it seemed to work pretty well cutting out the generator that was running next door. Anyone tried these before?

Got my Pilot Certificate today!
Thirsty replied to .Evan.'s topic in Student Pilot & Further Learning
Well done mate! You're going to enjoy scooting around that 25nm circle. It's actually a pretty large area but you'll definately be hanging out for your XC. I just did mine and flew to Temora as my first nav away from home and loved it! -
Here's a very well written response to someone on another forum doing some jab bashing - http://www.sarangan.org/www/mhonarc/mharc/html//europa-list/2010-01/msg00145.html I agree with what this guy says - it's all in teh maintenance and operation. Not all the time of course but a large proportion of engine problems come down to poor operation/maintenance. I don't really believe Rotax are THAT much better than jab engines. Much of what we say and read on these forums is hearsay and second hand and just because we don't hear of a lot of Rotax issues doesn't mean they aren't happening. I'm never going to be able to convince someone who believes jab engines are crap - and no-one is going to be able to convince me Rotax engines are bullet proof and never break.
-
I don't believe Jab or Rotax know the true stats. I reckon most people that have problems probably just fix it and get on with it without mentioning the issue to the manufacturer or RA-Aus.

Natfly housestay - anyone got a spare room for a couple?

Thanks mate. I hadn't noticed that one but I now have somewhere to stay thanks to you and Cazza! Wife is now happy we can sleep in a bed instead of under the wing. -
Jabiru Engine 2200 Mechanical Problem Reporting
Thirsty replied to rick-p's topic in Engines and Props
I had a thru bolt go on me on Sunday during a solo nav. I was flying along at 3500' having a lovely time and I just sort of noticed the engine didn't sound quite right. Nothing dramatic, just a kind of whoofing sound. As I was heading over high/rough terrain I headed back. After landing I took the cowls off and noticed the lower No 1 thru bolt was broken. Oil everywhere of course. Pulled the cylinder off and everything looked good so we put a new thru bolt in and buttoned her up. Going good now. A very strange coincidence though - a friend of mine with a J160 had a thru bolt go at 360 hrs from new. The engine that went on me was a reco unit (large fins and solid lifter) and that also went at around 360 hrs. This engine has had a thru bolt go before (when it was new) but I haven't yet looked to see what hours that happened at. The J160 is privately owned and is very well maintained and flown by someone with excellent mechanical sympathy whereas the a/c that went on me is a training school aircraft flown by hamfisted students. I don't know what conclusions can be drawn from this but I'm looking forward to the Jab engine forum at Natfly :) -
Had my first flight in a LSA 55 today

Deskpilot - yes was good to meet you to - yo're definately the first forum member I've met! Hildy - I was cutting it very close. If I didn't get it I would have been doing a very long navex :) Sorry to hear you can't make it too. We are camping underwing at this stage though I've made another post asking if anyone is renting a house I could take a room in. -

Of course not :) Anyway, this was my test and I had to prove I could join and land at a fairly busy aerodrome so I didn't have much choice. -

Well I got to mingle with a bunch of gliders when I arrived there for my touch and go! That was fun. There were gliders parked all over the runways and when they heard my inbound call they moved them all off the runways for me - was a lot of fun! I'll be stopping at Truro at some stage once I get back from Temora. -

Well, got my XC endo today. Flew from Murray Bridge to Gawler with a brief stopover at Rowland Flat. Was a good flight and I didn't do anything much wrong so all legal to go to Temora now! So in 4 and a half months and 32 hours I've gone from having a PPL® (not having flown for almost 20 years) to having a RA Pilot cert with XC, passenger and radio endos. Pretty happy overall and looking forward to Temora now. We're leaving Thursday and will arrive sometime Thursday arvo.
