I often hit the wrong 'like' button on my ipad but immediately edit it if I notice it. Laurie

I bet a lot of aircraft carrier pilots have landed on a stool! (in their pants....)

Probably the nicest 601 I've seen belongs to a fellow by the name of Rick near Wangaratta. It has a heap of modifications recommended by Peter Furlong of 'Gippsland Aeronautics' (designer of the Airvan and Fatman aircraft). I would have no hesitation flying in that machine. Laurie

There're only 20k aren't they? :)You won't get a decent cirrus in that price range -
Does anyone here have prop making experience? I have a timber prop and would like to increase its pitch or blade area by sheathing it with fibreglass as is done with Jabiru hoop one props. Laurie.

I've flown a mate's GR 582 a bit - it certainly gets very thirsty if you ask more than 60 knots of it. That said, it is a very pleasant aircraft to fly, a great tail dragger, strong, responsive and fun. Laurie

Just flown off my first 25 hours of test flying within 40 nm of YLTV. I'm enjoying flying this UL450 much more than I imagined - finding it a bit challenging mainly due to its 'long wing aeroplane' characteristics compared to other aircraft I've flown. I've been testing a 'Sweetapple' prop from a mate's Corby Starlet, 56" x 44". Better climb and getting very close to VNE straight and level. I'm very pleased with the CHT's and oil temperature. Oil pressure seems a bit high but within Jabiru specifications. It's burning about 14 - 15 lph for 95 knots IAS at 2950 RPM. My next task is to forward the final 'test flight' correspondence to RaAUS to complete the registration process. The attached photo was taken when I recently took my paraglider for a fly (on passenger seat) Laurie

It works brilliantly, even with an early type starter which is much less powerful. LaurieJabiru sell a very good cold start kit. Inexpensive, easy to fit and it fires one set of plugs at very low revs while the starter is operating.- 1

I think you'll find it's a possible IFR flight level. Above 5000' isn't there a requirement to fly hemispherically? Many moons ago I departed Orange and anounced on the area frequency that I was at 5000' heading north. Melbourne Centre piped up and informed me that I was at an IFR level so I climbed to the correct hemispherical level. LaurieSince when is 6000ft an IFR limited area. Cant we go to 10,000 nowadays as VFR?- 2

Wha
What fuel was being used? Avgas, mogas 95, 98 or a shandy? LaurieIt is a factory built 230, which I cross hire from the owner.2.5 years old, hollow pushrod hydraulic motor with 480 hours, used for owner's trips and our cross country training. -

Looks nice. Congratulations. Heavier than I would have thought. Have fun with the test flying. Laurie.

I recently bought a 'Biker swag' made by oztrail. It weighs 5 kg but has a surprisingly comfortable foam mattress and rolls up pretty compact. No too dear either. Laurie

Keep the interesting videos coming. Weather's too crap for flying! Laurie

I've seen some Thomson props and their finish is second to none. The Omega prop in the above link should never have left the maker's workshop. Very disappointing for the purchaser and the maker. Laurie

Thanks. Don't think I'll be going there. Laurie

Thanks for that information microman. Terrible news about Brent's illness - I lost a great flying mate to that disease a couple of years ago. LaurieUnfortunately Brent Thompson had to sell his business - he has Motor Neurone disease. The purchaser was Bill Izard, located at Kihikihi - he can be contacted via his website - www.omegapropellors.com. Brent made a lot of props for Jabs and they always performed better with one of his props. Bill has the same blanks that Brent used so anything he produces should have a similar performance. -
Do you know if these props are still available, the website seems to have disappeared in the last couple of days?Personally, found the Brent Thompson props to be extremely well made, he made one for my Jabiru, easy got another 5 knots, smoother running as well.I'm presently experimenting with different props on my UL 450. The standard Jabiru 60 x 42 seems a bit fine as I'm easily pulling 3300 rpm on take off and cruise at just under 3000 rpm 95 knots. At the moment I've got a 56 x 44 Sweetapple fitted which is also pulling 3300 on take off but giving a better climb (around 1100 fpm solo with full tank). I also tried a Jab 60 x 44 which is going to 3300 on take off but about 200 fpm down on the Sweetapple. Laurie

I just spoke to someone who was pretty helpful and happy to advise, Mark I think it was. My tank was new and never had fuel in it. It had been sloshed with the brown stuff from years ago but this is not resistant to ethanol. The Kreem is pretty expensive, about $65 for 500 ml but with patience I was able to make it coat the entire inside of the tank. I'm using a mixture of avgas and 95, about 30/70 ratio. Laurie

[ and as far as I know Jabiru haven't yet released a 'sloshing' compound that will protect the tanks against some of the more aggressive aromatics in some PULPs. /QUOTE]
Jabiru recommended I use Kreem sloshing compound, bought from a local motorbike shop - I did my 65 litre tank form the UL 450. Laurie

My new rego took 4 weeks to process after it arrived at the RaAUS office. No issues. I think they are just going through them one at a time, crossing all the t's etc. 5 more hours flying and I should be off the 40 mile restriction. Laurie

G'day Jay, welcome to the forum. Plenty of good discussion here. Laurie.

The damage doesn't look too sharp - it appears to have a decent radius; I doubt it will crack. I'd be tempted to put bucking bar behind it and give it a tap with a plastic hammer to flatten it out. Laurie
Another engine failure
