    Deb that's the point I'm trying to make, as the regulations are written, you don't need an instructor to sign you off for the Nav Endorsement. Exactly, although the school I fly with has C172's, so I'm expecting 5+ hours training to be checked off on those, I'm not expecting to do 100nm Nav's, as Nav endorsement is the same no matter of the aircraft. I've only been able to track down one GA school that has VH registered Jabs for training.

    Yep, no different to if you learnt to fly a PA28 and then wanted to hire a c172, you need to show your able to fly that aircraft safely. That takes as many hours as required. What i'm saying is, the Nav and Flight radio isn't what the flight review is checking, it's flying the aircraft safely. However if CASA require an instructor to sign a form to gain the endorsement, no instructor in their right mind will do so without some form of training on that endorsement (i.e. a Nav Flight), that's not what the regs require.

    The sign off should be a flight review, the same you get every 2 years as a BFR. At least that's what the regulations imply.

    I don't have the regulation in front of me, but from memory it says if you have RPC you qualify for RPL. if you have Nav on RPC you get it on RPL. No where does it say you need to get it signed off by a GA instructor. You need to conduct a flight review on the class of aircraft, but not each endorsement.

    CAO 95.55 covers the rule set to allow an aircraft to operate under the RAA umbrella, however it does not force RAA to accept the registration of an aircraft. I don't see how RAA could say they it's out of their hands, they are the authority that provides registration to these aircraft, I think it's more then acceptable to expect they work with the manufacture to improve.

    Why do you need a GA school to sign you off? The regulation clearly states that the RPC Nav equals the RPL Nav

    In lobbying Jabiru to conduct an in depth investigation into these engine issues and share the results. RAAUS allows the registration of the aircraft, if there is such a major issue and the manufacture isn't doing anything then surely the board with the Tech Manager can issue a directive that no new aircraft fitted with this engine shall be provided registration until it's improved?

    I also had my RPL issued without the endorsements, rang CASA and was told I need to submit the 61-RE form. From what I can tell it shouldn't apply for someone with a RPC with those endorsements (Nav + radio) as long as you can prove the English Prof. I thought that was going to be the easy part as I've already got it covered on another license but seems the 2 systems don't communicate. Will try again on Monday and see how we go.

    Trying to improve reliability of any aircraft or engine should fall within the responsibility of RA-AUS (thus the board). The board are there not only to represent the members but act in the best interests of the association. While its great to be considerate of member's interest in ownership and value of investment, it ranks quite low when compared to the safety of members and the general public. And at the end of the day, isn't trying to make the product more reliable for future owners (who may not be aware of the reliability) a higher priority then a decrease in the value of the brands secondhand aircraft? Personally I fly a Jab, think it's a great aircraft and not come across any problems. However I'm not it's owner nor it's maintainer, as much as I would like to own my own aircraft, buying into a Jab doesn't make sense until this can be resolved.

    As was pointed out by Andy, all members could receive a $40 reduction in membership fees to make up for the lack of a hard copy magazine, and at the same time a $40 increase in fees due to the increase costs of operating. By going with a digital copy, you avoid having just getting hit with a $40 increase (ie without the reduction). If you don't reduce the staff (ie wages) which is the single biggest cost (i don't have the figures in front of me but I recall it being almost if not bigger then all other costs combined), then we will need to raise the membership fee or reduce other services (such as the magazine, NATFLY etc)

    I thought experimental GA allowed the owner/builder to do their own maintaince? Maj do you charge a different rate as a LAME then you do as a L2 (assuming you have both quals)?

    That would be the better option IMHO, instead of a $40 increase in fee, it would be a $40 yearly subscription to the magazine. However if the board/CEO can find a way that the magazine can be cost neutral then even better. I think we still need to address the issue of wages and how we can get that back under control. A believe a couple of positions we're put on to control the registration disaster, now that it's under control has these positions been cut or absorbed in other areas of raaus? Or is the new system reliant on the extra staff?

    How about the members who don't mind or would rather get the magazine on time and in digital form, will we avoid having to pay the $40 increase? Keep adding costs and we may just find alot more members will go the RPL+experimental GA and RA-AUS will just be left to members who can't get a medical. The less members, the more the fees will need to keep going up to cover the shortfall.

    Yet they see zero patients a year and your happy to call them experts in the field? No your DAME is the person in the best position to determine your health and fitness. If they aren't up to the task then they shouldn't have been given the qualification. Too many examples recently of both the DAME and referred specialist both saying the results are okay, only to be overturned by 'someone' at CASA who can't give you any details or let alone actually examine you.

    when you say go through AvMed, i'm assuming you mean Aviation Medicine, rather then the division in CASA? CASA does not oversea ADF licensing or medical. From all hoops pilots and ATC have to jump through to get a medical and licence, i'm sure the DAME's have a strict certification process as well

    I don't think a $30-40 fee increase could be justified. I agree with looking at reducing the associations expenses rather then increasing the members expenses (which is what the board appears to be doing already). If what the reports are saying are correct, in that we have about 3-4 years at the current rate before we are in deep trouble, I'd say the best course of action would be to focus on reducing the overheads, whether that's digital magazine, move to an automated system which requires less clerical staff, ditch some of CASA's demands back to them or a mixture of all the options.

    Indeed, but it generally means someone else misses out on the appointment. Most specialists have a decent sized waiting list. In these cases it was a waste of resources and in the end CASA Medical overruled the tests anyway.

    I've seen a few medicals this year which have resulted in restrictions/suspensions on the medical even though the specialist have given a clean bill of health. Such specialist were even upset that their time is being wasted doing these tests which are not required (in their opinion)

    I doubt it. I would imagine the contract would be for the publisher to provide X amount of copies at Y cost per copy. Anything the publisher makes on advertising is icing on the cake. Hopefully this will be addressed as part of the review and maybe brought in house with only the printing contracted out.

    Just to clarify, the AvMed (aviation medical based on the Heavy drivers license) is not the same as the Class 3 Medical. The Class 3 is similar to a Class 2 Medical, however is only valid for 2 years and is required by Air Traffic Controllers. I don't see why a head of medical should be required. They have a DAME system and should rely on that.

    Personally i would have kept the stores separate and worked out a way for the back-end to be the same (ie separate store fronts) but it's your business and that's all that counts. Best of luck with the new store.

    When I joined a few years ago I had know idea what the RA-AUS was or that in fact it was an option for flying. As part of my studies, my uni started to offer a subject which included 20 hours of flying towards the RPC. I then went on to finish my RPC and gain the PAX and Nav endorsements. RA-AUS provides a straight forward and much cheaper way of flying newly built and often well equipped aircraft. I have considered getting my PPL (solely for the CTA endorsement) however I can't justify spending over $300 to hire an aircraft 30 plus years old, when for half the price I can fly a brand new Jabiru that does the job. Now I just need to find the Jabiru with a VH rego so I can complete the RPL and gain that CTA endorsement all would be well!

    I think the CEO is investigating options regarding the magazine. The way I understood the motion, the paper mag stays until April at which time a new system will come in. What that is exactly hasn't been decided (still under investigation). If your concerned about a solution and want it looked at, maybe send him a quick email. He does appear to reply within a business day.
