  1. I am a bit loathe in telling my story of rec flying but I will post anyway. I was under a cloud when my wife died after a long illness. I did a trip to Israel to visit my daughter. The few hours spent at Johannesburg in transit was spent watching the Olympics and reading a South African flying magazine where the author compared a Cessna 172 to a Jabiru. To cut a long story short, I decided to take a change in attitude . When home again I did my training and received my certificate at 69 years of age. That was eight years ago and I can categorically say that after 500 odd hours of flying, I can thank the rec flying system for what I consider to be another method of living with a purpose and fun. Sorry if I am too personal. Phil.
  2. Scary experience Our airfield, council owned has extinguishes all over the place After reading your post it reminds me of an Incident that actually happened. A good lesson I was at Swan Hill some years ago, minding my own business. A car at the service station opposite at the bowser erupted in flames. The driver got a blanket from the boot and covered the engine, all OK until the blanket caught fire. Anyway, I went into the office to tell the operator that he had a fire at the bowser, he was on the phone to the fire brigade and told me he was busy ringing. I asked him where was the fire extinguisher? He hung up the phone and put the fire out!!! I have since made myself aware of the location of safety gear Phil.
  3. Probably busy carving a new prop
  4. Fair enough Phil.
  5. Andy wrote Using your example the consultants generally identify what needs to be done but not necessarily how, I would have expected that the GM and board were capable of identifying the what....or are my expectations too high? Andy, That's probably part of the problem. As I see it the organisation needs direction and action! Do they pussy foot around the problems, or take positive steps? The board is made up of individuals that need leadership and positive decisions. IMHO one way to achieve this is to get sound expert advice as stated. I don't necessarily agree with you on your point that the advice would only identify what needs to be done. This would be entirely up to the brief. Frank I do hope that the new board has some positive input. I joined Andy's discussion as invited with my two bobs worth. Perhaps this line of action (refer my reply) has not been discussed at board level If I chuck in a comment or thought, does this make me a stirrer? Phil
  6. How to tell which end of a worm is which. Apparently you put the worm in flour and wait until it farts.
  7. Go Zulu 5 year warranty and has all that you need Have had mine and pax now for 4 years. My DC's are in the cupboard which I lend out occasionally I sent one set back for service last week, turned up yesterday with new ear covers, no charge. Phil.
  8. Andy Thanks for your thoughts online. Being a delegative person that I am, my take on this would be to investigate the appointment of a business management expert to review the current practices and recommend a plan for the future. There are some very able firms out there that specialise in this field. I.e accountancy companies. It could be unsettling for some but as I see it, it would be worth the $'s to get professional advice and direction. The board and management could then deliver the goods. What says you? Phil.
  9. That's fair enough Bruce. Two spots taken, I will remit tomorrow. Cheers. Phil
  10. Mick, Go to Loxton aero club website Good pics and video. I still haven't mastered posting my pics but these are good Phil.
  11. 5135 and passenger will be there for the Sat and overnight. Just waiting on weather report Phil.
  12. Got mine from a battery shop, sorry cant think of the name. They have a depot at Marion and Pooraka. I can make a phone call if you need to know. Phil
  13. Could be the battery that is U/S. otherwise you should have seen the ALT light on. Had the same happen in my 230 a few months ago. New battery and all OK Phil
  14. Patrick, We have been nurturing your grassy spot for you. Date has been set I believe. Phil.
  15. Well, if we get back to our recreational flying activities, the above has no bearing on our normal procedures, it has been suggested in previous posts that it it advise able to track to the RIGHT of track by a mile or so. I have taken this info on board on X country flights. Instead of firing up the destination before take-off I have now Got into the habit of crossing the direct line to the waypoint to the right and then rebooting the GPS to the waypoint. If for instance you take a direct line from A to B from your departure point and the other aircraft does the same with his, there will be some excitement if not following the 1000' seperation. Only takes both aircraft to be 150' below their altitude to be separated by the 700 ' as stated. IMHO
  16. I can relate to this! Plenty of great stories from the outback that are not published. Spent a few years up north in the 50's My mind still boggles that no one ate their own meat, ear tags down the dunny etc, played tennis next week as if long lost friends. Talking about Cunnamulla, Whilst caravaning a few years ago, i met a guy in the pub that was desperate to get the cattle mustered before the boss visited from Sydney. I asked the barman "what gives" he said that this guy had been in town for the past week and is just sobering up. Always wondered if he retained his job! Sorry for the off topic comments Phil
  17. I had a credit with Jabiru so by memory I reckon it was $2025 posted retail. Seems expensive but it comes with a different spinner and backing plate and a few other gizmos. I had got a LAME to install, took about an hour. The wooden prop for the 230 is priced well over one K. I think about $600 less than the Scimitar or thereabouts. My old prop is for sale if anyone is interested, complete with spinner, and all bolts and washers. in good condition. Phil.
  18. I usually sit on the recommended 2800 or slightly over when cross country cruising. My flight plans were spot on at 112kn. I have upped that to 115 kn since fitting the new prop. The most impressive results are in the shorter take-off run, quite amazing really. Probably due to the 53 pitch instead of the original 54. Other advantages are less stone damage and not rain affected. Tracking is perfect, no adjustment required. Hope this helps. Phil.
  19. I fitted the new Scimitar for the 230 from Jabiru No adjustments needed for tracking etc. when fitted. Performs very well compared to the original wooden prop. Phil.
  20. If you blokes can't afford $25 to maintain this hobby take up lawn bowls. The organisation has been under resourced for far too long, I expected a bigger increase to fix the problems. I paid my lawn bowls subs last week. $170. I don't get any insurance but I do get a magazine that I never read. The increase is fair IMO Phil.
  21. Mate of mine has got a 60km zone licence only. Does this mean he can only fly at this speed or only in this built up area? Joking of course.
  22. Well done, I had hoped that you would get back up Brilliant news
  23. Yes, thought of that at the time but felt compelled to take the offer. The controller made the comment after I thanked him and before changing back to the ctaf Point taken. I believe that I have an aircraft that is suitable for cta. Phil
  24. Getting near 500 hours now. I occasionally have the right hand lead light gauge drop to red. Correcting is ok, just a tiny bit of rudder will correct in less than a minute. It is impossible in my opinion for the fuel to transfer from one tank to the other in this time. My assumption is that the fuel in the RED gauge is away from the sender, ie slightly out of balance. Two instructors that I know ferried a Jab back for the owner, they landed when one tank lead light indicated red, phone call to Jab who said all ok Phil
