  1. Indeed...and there seems to be some sort of primer/sealant/coating? on the fibreglass cowlings that we didn't get.And what's this about flush fuel caps???

    Looks like they have gone back to the Gel Coat fiberglass finish. Embarrassed as I am to admit it, my unfinished kit had that in mid 2013, The raw finish causes some more headaches to achieve a smooth finish to paint but saves a little weight.

     

     

  2. Sorry no easy way...get all the parts out and sort them into groups and make them off in the relative chapters there is a index of parts at the start of each chapter

    And it is only a guide and often not complete but it will give you some idea. You still will not know until you have it built. Many of the bolts etc are packed in assemblies so it is a pity to unpack them all up front, Get yourself a packet of zip lock bags and repack them and label them as you go.

     

     

  3. Just be careful when you finally get to your W&B you may find she is a bit tail heavy

    Heavy weight Airmaster on the front will sort it out. Reg's maroon XL has a 4kg block of ballast above the tail skid, so the battery placement will hopefully get me back that weight.

     

     

  4. There is a lot more structure in the rear of a S...that is why the battery goes behind the pilot in the S but needs to be down the back in the XL

    My battery is down the back, that is why I swapped the side sheets to put the door on the other side, gives more room to work on the battery.

     

     

  5. Hi Mark, you fitted Condor 6.00 X 6 wheels. Did you drill the offset valve hole in the wheel hub, as per the manual?Thanks.

    DON'T DRILL !!

     

    Just get the tubes with the right angle brass stem that they should be supplied with anyway and mount the stem out through the two half holes in the rim casting.

     

     

  6. Condors fell onto the rims, but still had to take care not to pinch the tube when doing up the bolt together rims. Tubes needed to be inflated just up to full shape to keep them from bulging into the joint before the bolts were tightened.

     

     

  7. All cleko'd, no rivets at all yet, Steve.So, did you not have to flatten the top of the tunnel, as described by Mark at #211 above?

    I agreed with Mark because I had to do the same.

     

    I believe the part is the correct shape but the curve along the fold is a bit shaper than the computer intended, causing the whole part to sit a little bit higher than intended.

     

    Remember neither Mark or I were dealing with adjustable seats either. A good job because we are both well over six foot and need all the head room we can get.

    Always a last resort because the $300,000 computer program that designed your kit is a lot smarter than any first time builder. Always cleco everything in that area before riveting anything, is a good general rule.

  9. In English that is an angle grinder.

    Given the quoted speed of 900 rpm, I would suggest that in English it would be and angle drill as majortom suggested. You could get yourself in all sorts of trouble if you sailed into deburring aluminium parts with and angle grinder doing 10,000 rpm.

     

     

  10. Reg's first Savannah was GA registered for about two weeks before he converted it to RAA. I don't remember him mentioning any particular grief getting his original rego through, nor any difficulty converting it to RAA.

    This has been reported before with other incidents in RAA and very rarely has it been the case, but I believe these reports start off as an ambulance report on two patients taken from the scene and the journalist turns them into two "passengers".

     

    With the advent of driverless Uber cars it will probably get even more common.

     

     

  12. Edit: Because the motor design is brushless direct current (BLDC) it is possible to have a regenerative capability while descending. This was not mentioned

    I am guessing that a prop designed and tuned for a record climb is not going to be tuned for regeneration as well, and where is the point once the record has been set anyway?

    Tune in next week. Two inexperienced pilots trying to find their landing place after last light on the first night of a four thousand Km trip from Adelaide to the Kimberley. With radio failure they can't communicate with their ground crew who have their headlights on the landing strip.

  14. I decided to do my tail completely match-hole'd for accuracy, so damn easy, less than an hour to pop it together, but I have to watch the 51% rule too.

    Doesn't take the CNC machines long to punch out the parts and fold them, so unless you are very quick, I wouldn't worry about the 51% rule, it takes nearly as long to deburr the parts for a nice finish as the machines take to spit them out.
