  1. Most controllers seem to come with 3 options, I'll put in a 3-way switch for "just in case".

(eg just in case I'm landing at dusk, you can choose the "both on" option as landing lights. I know you guys in QLD don't really get a twilight, more like a light being switched off, but in lower latitudes it can be quite long.)

The twilight time is pretty long in most of New Zealand too.

  2. Sounds great, I just wish I could see for myself. Still no definitive ship date, and the window Airmaster provided is quickly passing :(.

When I built my Lightning I included MAP and fuel flow gauges, but I think for the Jabiru all I would need is the MAP sensor.

Good tip on the carbon brushes for the slip ring.

Which fuel flow gauge (or system) did you use?

  3. Some pics

    ☆ Definitely very different!!

I hope it works well on the Savannah.

  4. Marty - the analogy I would use is: - we live out our lives as if the World is flat, most of us know/accept that science has found it to be a sphere. It is however a relatively free world and some insist against all the evidence, that its flat - and I support that freedom.

I agree, lights are great fun and if they make you feel more secure ,wonderful! but dont fool yourself that there is any significant safety benefit.

Low power drain yes, relativly low cost yes however definitely not without risk - all that additional circuitry /connections adds up to a potential and unnecessary additional risk - that's okay if that's what you want to do with your aircraft.

I am not against lights - I actually like them. I also like a good paint job - I have a preference for basic unadorned white (very boring). Some pilots want to go the extra mile and have a "go faster paint" scheme - good luck to them but it wont actually add Knots and may (if its heavy enough) degrade the aircraft's performance marginally. their choice and I support that.

Yes: what looks like a flat runway is actually curved.

  5. Perhaps I have been misinformed.

    • Nav/landing lights are not required on RAA aircraft - their installation/use is completely at the discretion of the PIC.
    • Their installation on RAA aircraft is essentially a fun (not functional) thing to do, much like a fancy paint scheme. Which I support.

I like FUNctional items on Recreational Aircraft as long as they only add minimal or neglible weight.

  6. Couple of things...

When I changed my halogen landing light to a LED unit, I added "fixed ON" or "FLASH" with an LED flasher unit from Jaycar and 3 way toggle switch (Very easy to wire. Only one + wire from switch to light).

I'm waiting on some green/red LED navigation bulbs and lenses to come from the US to replace my existing units. ( fixed on) They are said to consume a lot less power than normal bulbs.

They have a variety of bulbs and stuff....not bad prices ( for aviation).

Are your flashing lights going to be a parallel flashing pair or a pair of wig wag lights?

  7. Hi Bob

Yes we have been at it again...trying to make things better than supplied..and stronger with little addition of weight.

If you look back further in the blog you will see we made a jig and made our own cabin frames. Based on 3 frames which were all not quite the same when you get 3 of them and compare them. We made sure it was actually symetrical for a start. The welding on the std cabin frames is not what I would call "aviation grade". The front bars on ours do have that bend your talking about it is just the angle the pic was taken from and I think the colour that seems to make it look like that. Yes we added the gussets at the top and also the handles. Thats the one thing that really needs to be added is those handles it just makes it easier to get in and out of and when its rough its something to hang on to. The main crossbar at the top is also a little thicker and bigger in diameter but not by much but enough to add a enormous amount of main strength. The handles we added later once we had got the right size material. Danny tacked the frame together as my tig skills are crap then we sent the frames off to get properly welded. The assemblies were then sent off to the powder coaters to get properly done they are not painted

That looks like a big job.

  8. It is a pity that the LSA name has been commandeered for a specific tightly defined group because that is what most Ultralights (USA & AUS) & Microlights (NZ & UK) are, "Light Sport Aircraft". The Ultralight/Microlight terminology doesn't suit the modern product in my opinion, LSA does.

I have often thought the same thing. Here in NZ a 600 kg microlight seems a contradiction in terms.

  9. Fortunately the blades I wanted, they had in stock from Sensenich. But I am sure your are correct about the “extreme lockdown” measures.

New Zealand came out of the Lock Down into Alert Level 1 on Tuesday, three days ago. People can now go back to work so I think you'll have your Airmaster in the near future.

  10. Hope to read some results when you have got it. Such promises make me sceptic, but their way to look at it impresses me.

I am somewhat skeptical about manufacturer's claims too, especially without any backing of real world experience. That is why I was happy to read about actual comparison results with a draggier aircraft such as the Savannah S (see the attachment in my first post).

  11. Well hopefully in about 2 or 3 weeks I will be able to give you some real data on them Hank. The recommended model is the DUR-3-175-C ...I have the 120mm spacer backplate and 260mm spinner coming. Also a std no extension backplate. My mate danny wants it on his Sav straight up as he has been chasing vibrations in his . he has tried his bolly and a warpdrive..there is a little difference between them but all reports say this prop substantially reduces vibration due to it being so light

    Great!

  12. Not sure Hank if there is a dealer there...maybe I should be the Oceania dealer :)

I was talking with a sav business overseas about other matters and asked about props as I wanted to try something better. They had done a lot of different prop testing and told me they love the Eprops..They gave me the details of who to contact and it went quickly from there. I read almost all of te testamonials..and there is a lot of them...not really even one that said it wasnt a lot better than any of the other brands and they all loved the props and would buy again. Really looking forward to getting the first one..got guys lining up already to try it on their aircraft. Might be a little sideline for you Hank...sorry for the thread drift Mike

I think that there could be a real market for E-props in NZ too. They seem like a great product with a lot of serious engineering behind it.

I am sorry about the very serious thread drift, Blue Adventures. I have started a new E-props thread in the propeller section: E-Props ...who has first hand experience with these .

:off topic: ...now, back to bigger tyres!!

  13. Hi all,

I am building an ICP Savannah S and I am leaving no stone unturned looking at the best motor, propeller and/or instruments.

A few times now, I have come across the possibility of using an E-props propeller. Two interesting articles of actual testing with Savannah S aircraft are attached below.

Does anyone else have actual E-props experience on aircraft they have flown and/or own?

  14. excellent....I will be trialling a new prop in a couple of weeks...apparently popular with skyrangers etc in Europe. Its made in France...I will be the aus dealer here...E-Prop they are super light and all carbon..all reports seem to get speed increase less vibration and noise. Have you seen any mention of the E-props on those other forums?

It is interesting that the E-props company are appointing an Australian dealer.

When I was researching engines and propellers, E-props came up as being the lightest around. I like the titanium edge protection and also the hardening additive that they place in the resin at the leading edge of the non-titanium props that they sell.

Who will be the NZ dealer? Are they looking for one??

  15. 30th / 31st May. . . Absolutely deserted airfield.

Nobody working on un-locking down aircraft,. . . Weather Beautiful. . . no occasional visitors . . .only three volts used on the Hand held radio. . .

Most Odd. for one of the (Formally) busiest LSA airfields in the County. . .

Old mate phoned to ask If Id fly with him in his new toy ( A Eurofox ) I said, Sadly mate. . .NO. I'm not current for one. . .and I've never flown the type for two ( Not that the second bit wold have stopped me. . .as it is very similar to a Kitfox, but with a bloody Nose wheel)

So. . .. Altogther, a very sad weekend MIND YOU .. Eldest Daughter has invited me to a BBQ in her back garden on June 2nd, since the Govt. have now relaxed some of their rules to allow this, AND that it is also my Seventieth birthday too. . .. and ( I gather ) that I shall be allowed to consume unlimited Alcoholic comestibles all day . . .

    Whatz not to ;like a lot . . .?

Although she baulked at allowing my Old Mate Neville (Ex SAS ) to parachute into the garden and have a pint. . .

Neville God Bless him,. . was one of the original developers of the' HALO' jump. But died in 1996. . .

Taught himelf to fly a Flexwing Microlight in an afternoon,. . .and then found his way 50 miles to Our airfield,. . .here e were having a barbecue in the fog. . . . They just don't make them like that anymore.

    Happy 70th birthday, Phil!!
