  1. A few years ago I had the misfortune of a catastrophic engine failure at night in a Chieftain. The engine blew to bits causing oil to spill all over the white hot turbo charger, a fire ensued which thankfully blew itself out after a short while. When I think back it is so important to practice your emergency procedures. The phase one actions for assymetric were done almost subconciously because we trained for that regularly. I can only imagine what the outcome might have been if the fire did not extinguish by itself. One things for sure I would not be typing posts here.....
  2. Damn rules are funny things arn't they..... I have never been able to figure out why you need a commercial licence to take a photographer up to take a few snappies if your getting paid, but you only need a PPl to let people jump out of your aircraft????? hmmmmm.
  3. I think that healthy debate is good, as long as a product is not just knocked because of a bias towards another which may be unjustified. By all means qualify your statements and back it up with facts, don't just knock over the tall poppies. Its a good thing we all have different tastes as we would be waiting 10 years for a Jabiru hey..............
  4. Thanks destiny, would like to hear what Garry thought of the Jabiru engine if your happy to post here...
  5. Just an interesting observation, with all the replies to this post, I read pretty good support for gary Morgan, and rightly so, he makes a very fine aircraft indeed. The interesting thing here is that when a member asks for advice from the forum on the purchase of a Jabiru, all manner of negatives come through. Gary uses both Jabiru and Rotax engines in his aircraft but alas no negatives in relation to the reliability of his aircraft. I ask myself, why is it so?.... Is it that some people just knock the Jabiru engine when installed in a Jabiru aircraft or by the time Gary is producing the aircraft numbers that Jabiru are will he be subjected to the same criticisms. (as Jabiru rarely are criticised for their airframes). Not being critical of anyone here, just throwing something out for thought.i_dunno
  6. G,day, Have just bought a MRX PCAS. Ian told me that you have one. I went flying today and unfortunatly no aircraft around to test. I did find that on the ground in flight mode it showed an aircraft 1.5 miles away at 00 feet. This aircraft was only 50 feet away, would that be normal given that it was so close? The other issue it turned itself off after about 1 minute on at least 3 occasions???? I was squarking 1200 but it showed me everything but. I will give the transponder aerial a good clean before I fly again. I have heard of a few issues in the past, I am just hoping that these have all been rectified. Appreciate any advice or info that you can give. Regards Danny (Biggles5128)
  7. Reminds me of a mate flying his KR2 some years back, arrived back at the hangar with a very pale passenger holding an unfolded VTC in such a way as to not spill the contents into the cockpit. Ingenuity hey....
  8. Thanks geoff, was having a good look at these units on the web, sound like they would do the job at a hell of a lot less than JPI, I take it you would endorse the unit based on your experience. Did you find accuracy an issue?
  9. Yep, when I used to fly IFR everywhere things were simpler in lots of respects, very little issue of see and avoid , there was always someone on the other end of the radio to advise of possible conflicting traffic while climbing, descending or en route. The use of a device that will advise of traffic in close proximity and alert if they become a risk (on most occasions) is a little like putting a seat belt on when ever you get in a car, they may not always work, but will increase your chance of survivabilty. Your'e a long time dead so why not use every avenue available to increase situational awarness. They may not work all the time but they may just alert you to an aircraft that may be descending onto your tailplane that otherwise you would not have a hope in hell of seeing, no matter how vigilent you are with see and avoid.
  10. With almost 10,000 votes of Ra aus members we should form our own party.... then maybe we could get some action!
  11. Thanks Ian, do you have them in stock and what is rough delivery time to Glen Innes NSW......
  12. Not sure I get ya drift BlackRod, Jab engines have been able to run on Mogas for sometime now, a lot of pilots only use mogas in theirs as they can't get hold of avgas.?????
  13. Thanks Russ, I have read on a few places where there have been some problems with fine strands from filters etc causing the turbine to not function properly in the Fuel Mizer, have not heard of the same issues with the JPI. Do they come with another filter or do you rely on the in line filter of the aircraft?
  14. Thanks for all the comments, can someone let me know if they have had continued success with the FS450 from JPI and some detail on the best place to fit the transducer on a J230.
  15. You are so right Blackrod, boats are just holes in the water that you pour money into and planes are just.......................... what a coincidence hey!
  16. All very good points. One of the features that I am looking for is to know exactly what fuel burn I am having at various power settings. As I have an anologue guage for RPM, just a slight movement on the throttle setting can mean that I have moved the needle on the jet to go from burning 25l/hr to towards 35l/hr. Another advantage as I see it is, when I am flying at A095, I have full throttle to maintain 2850RPM. It will be nice to know that the pressure compensating carb is doing its job. If I see that I am burning around the 25l/hr mark I know that I am getting sufficient cooling from the fuel/air ratio. (I will happily be corrected if this logic does not stack up).
  17. I suppose I will have to spend the extra $$$$ on a JPI FS450. Again if there are any experiences good or bad I would like to here them. I considered going for the marine unit which by all accounts is probably identical however, call it what you like but "there's boats and there's planes".
  18. Thanks Ian, I am one of those orders, I will give you a call.
  19. I am considering purchasing a Zaon traffic alert, would be interested to hear of any ones comments on these. The XRX is a 3 times the price of the MRX, is it 3 times as good? Am I asking the obviuos here but will these systems only pick up another aircraft which has their transponder on?
  20. Hey guys, will be installing a fuel mizer very shortly on my J230, any tips tricks or issues, would love to hear about them. Regards
  21. Sometimes the obvious is right under your nose... I tried the original hands free kit that iphone provides with the phone, the ear pieces fit very nicely while wearing your headset and don't impair the audio quality of the headset. The mic sits snugly against the boom mic of the headset. The quality of received phone calls is great and am told that the other party can hear very clearly. Obviously with local radio chatter you would not be on the phone but for enroute phone coms I think it will work fine..... Cheap but very effective.
  22. Thank you all for your input. A number of good ideas, I will check out which one will suit my needs. Cheers.
  23. Does anyone know of a way that I can connect an iphone to be used through the headset while in flight?
  24. Seats I went to Bunnings and bought two padded seat covers that are designed for out door settings. They fit like a glove on Jab seats and provide the extra padding needed. They look good and are priced at about $15 each from memory.
  25. Goeff, I have also had problems starting my J230 on cold mornings. I have not done any of the mods. I find that when I hook up the jumper leads it starts in 1/2 a revolution. I have a 50 amp Anderson plug which I intended to hook up so that I could use a jumper pack without removing the cowl and so forth. Do you believe that the 50 amp plug is sufficient? Regards Danny
