1. I will pass on this info to Len next time I see him and thanx for sharing this matter Rob. as for flying qualities of XT-912 (streak-III) it flies like a solid tank even in rough air and seems very stable in flight (not squirly). I dont have much experience in trikes yet but comparing to my first hour of training in a wizard, it seems like a much better machine (nice comfortable ride with a solid feel) cheers
2. Drifter Aerobatics and other Youtube bits Wayne Fisher doing aerobatics in his VH registered experimental Drifter Now where the hell is my TIF guy.........ohh sh**. http://www.pfg.dk/movie/Fun%20Stuff/...0Comercial.mpg
3. Had a productive 3rd lesson of my trike training today with Len Burger of microlight adventures at somersby airfield (1 hr north of sydney). Len’s got a XT-912 streak III (with ballistic chute) which is very comforting when looking over the rugged terrain of local somersby strip from above. After trying to get my ticket for last many months from different places Len’s been a good find for me and I am already on my 4th lesson in two weeks time. I find his no bull safety oriented instructional style to be of excellent quality and he does not have the habit of grabbing the controls at the first given opportunity (assuming no f/ups from my side) which I feel is a confidence booster. I feel a bit annoyed that I could’nt find him last year (Len does’nt advertise very much in Raaus circles and trains only for hgfa ticket), I could have had one year of fun, flying the pursuit trike. Any way better late than never and it does’nt seem far now. Also met another forum member peter – forum id pilotpj (isn’t this forum great) at the airfield today who flies a really nice looking Europa aircraft. Below is the photo of his impressive looking instrument panel which he has made himself. It was good chatting to him and listening to his around Australia sorties. All in all a good day today cheers
4. Once upon a time in a village a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each. The villagers knew that there were many monkeys in their forest. They left their farms on the plains and went into the forest to catch them. The man bought thousands at $10. As the supply of monkeys started to diminish the villagers stopped looking. Finding and catching monkeys was soon no longer worth the effort for $10. They started to return to their farms to plant the spring crop. The man then announced that he would buy monkeys for $20 each. This new higher price renewed the effort of the villagers and they headed back into the forest to find and catch monkeys again to sell. When the monkey supply diminished even further that summer and the people started to return to their farms, worried they had not made enough money selling monkeys to buy all the food they needed but had not planted any crops yet either, the man raised the price he'd pay for monkeys to $25 each. The hunt was on again. Soon the supply of monkeys became so small that a villager didn't see a monkey in a day of hunting let alone catch one. Even at $25 each the effort was not profitable so the villagers finally headed back to their farms that fall. After nine month's absence from their farms they knew the time had passed to produce enough food for the coming winter, but at least now they had enough money from selling monkeys to buy food to eat. But the man wasn't finished. He announced that he would buy monkeys for $50 each! The villagers became very excited. He also explained that he had to go to the city on business and that his assistant was to stay behind to buy monkeys on his behalf. As soon as the man left the assistant told the villagers, "So you think you have made a lot of money selling monkeys, don't you? But do you want to really get rich?" "Yes, yes!" said the villagers. The man's assistant went on. "I have a gigantic, enormous cage filled with monkeys. I will sell them to you for only $35 each and when the man returns from the city you can sell them to him for $50 each and make a fat profit. You don't even have to work to find monkeys at all. Then you can not only buy all the food you need for this winter you call all buy flat panel TVs, too." The villagers were thrilled. They collected all of their savings together and bought all the monkeys in the assistant's cage then awaited the man's return. They never saw the man nor his assistant again. All the monkeys that were once in the woods were now in the village. All of the villager's savings were gone. That winter, half the villagers starved. Moral: Substitute housing for monkeys. As the winter of the US economy arrives, you still have the house you had before the price was bid up. Now that prices are falling back down, who has your savings? But don't worry. The government won't let you starve. To ensure re-election it will by inflation redistribute wealth from savers to debtors. Now you know how Wall Street works an asset bubble racket.
5. drifter 25-190 it sure is nick. I bought it from Jay Ryder (boonah airfield) about five years ago, who I believe bought it from peter reed. few of the issues it had when I bought it were ironed out e.g. left wing dropping, fitting new trim system, changing pitch blocks for correct RPM, aerial pursuits intercom and antenna, new flying wires and seats, fuel pumps etc. It has'nt missed a beat in last five years and has given me a lot of joy during this time. its an old donkey (flogged hard by countless students and pilots in the past) but still does the job (smashing bugs -that is:big_grin:)
6. jab powered drifter there is a jab powered drifter based at somersby airfield near gosford. owner steve sounded very pleased with it and mentioned he logged more than 6000 hours (now thats what you call drifter flying) on it trouble free. I saw him do a few circuits and it sounded really nice with good climb rate. according to steve his is the only jab powered drifter in australia. cheers
7. hello BP congratulations on your purchase of the Drifter mate(the biggest banger for your buck in terms of fun flying). for farrying your drifter you might contact Peter Reed at skyflite in kooralbyn. if he cant do it he might get you in touch with somebody who can. he farried mine from Qld to sydney about 5 years ago. cheers
8. wow, looks like we got some spirited answers in last 24 hrs, may be different set of rules for the GA aircraft creating confusion in this matter. any way thanx for the answers folks-the conclusion seems pretty obvious now-two bums max for the RAA aircraft (regardless of bum size) cheers
9. flying with baby onboard hi moz, can babies be carried on board with two adults in RAA aircraft. may be you or somebody else can shed some light on this. I have a 18 months old daughter and would love to take her with the missus to make some videos cheers
10. I have a solution for the steering problem which will also add to the flyable range of the pilot. Fly with your legs crossed. __________________ Ian Borg you are a genius borgy but I would hate to think of the tangled mess you gonna leave for the investigators if you happen to crash while trying to scratch your leg (may be cross your hands too to find the correct scratchy leg) ;) Last few months hav'nt been favourable for me for flying for personal reasons, but now things are under control and I am back in the game. I have started with the training and its a matter of finding few more good flyable weekends before I get my ticket.
11. Hi Chris, its easier to use humidity scale vs temperature on the chart as opposed to dew point depression. Relative humidity is shown on right hand side (blue tangent lines) on chart. however if u r keen on dew point measurement u can use the following crude method. scrap off the paint of a can of coke using sandpaper, cut the top section and put some water and ice in it. stir it with a thermometer(u can add salt to melt the ice quicker), when u see the condensation start to build on the outside of can, note the temp in thermometer. this is your dew point temp. cheers
12. do you have oil injection on your 503 or use pre-mixing chris ? if using oil injection more chances of having carby icing even at 80% power settings under certain temp. and humidity conditions
13. collection of flying videos Paramotor girl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pif0Vh6CX8&NR=1
14. good thread phil, just adding couple more of thou shell not's #fly over tiger country with single engine aircraft #exceed your aircraft's capability to handle weather #exceed your capability to handle your plane-but possess thorough command over full flight envelop of your aircraft if situation arises #fly with low fuel #go places at sunset chasing daylight (bitter experience here) among others
15. some how left throttle and centre/right stick seems more natural to me than the other way around, or may be its just me!! and you are right HPD the worlds greatest aircraft e.g. F15's,F16's,Drifter's are all this configuration ;)
16. wide angle cam you can check that with the mob that sell it ozzie. there contact is http://stores.ebay.com.au/thespycamshop cheers
17. flight video here`s the link to some of the video footage we taken that day. the bullet cam (new) cost me $58-00 inc. postage from ebay and another $20-00 for wires and sockets from dicksmith`s. I plugged this camera in my digital camcorder which accepts external AV inputs. had some issues with vibrations, might be resolved with thicker padding around camera. will check it out next time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtMw445SZ-A
18. keep it up mate you will get there. back swing can be a problem in drifter's(especially 582 engined one's due to heavy engine) and a firm/decisive foot is needed immediately after it starts to develop. on occasions you might find it easier to power on and control it while flying in ground effect. if you are flying 503 engine wire braced drifter you will find it much more controllable in back swing situation. given few more hours practice in calm conditions you will be on top of it cheers
19. I had the same problem with the drifter belly tank (not knowing when the transfer finished) and had my fuel transfer pump blow up after running dry. I have fixed this problem by routing the mizer fuel flow in my A/C between fuel transfer line. I only use Mizer for caliberation of fuel flow at different RPM occasionaly. now the Mizer tells me exactly how much fuel is getting transferred and I hav'nt lost any more fuel pumps. cheers
20. one thing I can think of these new regulations are going to stifle is future development of low cost twin engine designs. any one who has ever had his engine cough/splutter/ #@&*## during flight can testify to the relative safety of having two engines. gliding silently towards earth looking for a suitable paddock to land is not a very nice feeling to have. and No I am not thinking conventional twins with high cost/accident rates/training issues, may be something more like Deskpilot's coaxial twin photo, centreline twin or something which has'n been designed as yet.
21. when your weight of paperwork=takeoff weight, you are ready for take off. looks like things hav'nt changed much in civil aviation as yet. with so much privitisation happening in India there may be hope in few years perhaps. so what sort plane you planning to buy. are there any flying schools/clubs that hire planes to pilots in southern India
22. hello Karthi, welcome to the forums mate. I now live in sydney but originally from northern India. It will be good to hear any stories from you regarding flying in India. cheers
23. hi Ian, Teamrocket F1 EVO is not a factory built plane but the specs are truly impressive. you can have it built by build assist mob for ~150-200k AUD total cost depending upon your instrumentation. top speed - 240 KT Cruise - 210 KT ROC - 3500 ft/min range - 1000 Kts G- Loading +6-4g I know I cant afford one yet but who knows if you buy it I might be able to taste its inverted charactristics with you some day cheerios
24. 503 rotax in my drifter is mounted in similar position. just drill two holes on the sides of spark plugs on metal casing(outer cooling shroud) and use cable ties to attach bungie cord to these holes. just make sure the bungie cord passes right on top of the caps and is tight enough stopping plugs from falling off. cheers
25. hello Troy, what about a good old (and ugly??) used Jabi mate. for 40-45k you are cruising 90-95kts @15 lts/hr and if you are flying for 5 years you will probably sell it for similar sort of money after 5 years and they are not terribally expensive to maintain. During this time you will probably sharpen your flying skills enough to handle your next red hot ship. if you calculate all the expenses after 5 years (includind depreciation on A/C) this will probably give you the biggest bang for the buck but if money is no concern and 150kt tickles your fancy by all means go for your hearts desires. 2 cents from sunny the budget flyer
