Hate the heron head motors. Rings cook, pistons tops come off and the middle exhaust valves burn. Sorry but I've had a lot of them. Change the rod bolts at least. Sierra engine or BDA better. or Lotus 2 cam (rare). The cars are worth a lot . Drive sideways well. Nev

What ever you buy, and when that urge to go serious miles becomes you, the one standout example of others inflicted with the same desire to travel.......is a jabiru.

 

99.3% of our encounters are jabs.

 

Comfy / safe / 100+ kts / fuel mizers..( 4 cyl, 100kts...15LPH )

 

Service them right, control temps.........that's about it. ( 3 about to embark from my way, NQ,.....to top NT areas, and return ).....all jabs.

I nearly wet myself when, after this thread bogged down into the usual engine debate, - Shags announces he has purchased a Mk I Escort!

 

By far the least reliable engine I have ever sat behind. The gods of irony are smiling today.

I guess that is a good thing Nev if the engines are as bad as you say they are..

Mk I escort was my first car and I do have a bit of a (undeserved) soft spot for it. But the head is very prone to cracking between cylinders 2 and 3. And the ignition system is pretty awful. But thinking about it the 1300 was even worse, you can hardly remove the distributor cap it's that tight up under the inlet manifold.

 

The Escort, didn't go, didn't stop, could't turn and sometimes wouldn't run. But I suppose that was 1970s British cars in general.

A mk1 with 1600 is almost an Escort Mexico which i wish I'd bought back in the day. Ended up with a plain 1.3 mk2 - which i'd rate better than average of the Brit cars at the time. talking Vauxhal Chevette, Hilmans, Rovers and the like....or an Austin Kimberly. Mate had a Mini K - seemed the best of Minis.

 

Sure, my gearbox blew up all on its own, electrics by The Prince Of Darkness, and it burnt a valve just after warranty - but none of this cost more than $20 to fix.

 

In relation to choice of aircraft, consider how the plane is to be operated. if your familiar with a Kent engine, you'll be better placed to do your own work on a Jabiru. Of course you may very well have to. If you just want the plane to fly, dont know or care to maintain it, prefer someone else to take care of all that and just pay the bills, then 912 engines are good for that role. But stories of 5yrly mandatory hose replacements and $1200 for an ignition box when a Jab one costs $120 are things to consider.

This is a 1600 from a later mk2 that was dropped in it. I will run it till it dies then it is getting an sr20det full work over. Don't have time or workshop for that atm so the xflow it is. Still is a fun car to drive.

 

And the guy that had it before me had it all painted up in mexico colours so I will leave them as is. Just interior to fix up now and she should be right as rain.
