Ra to ga why

Buy an old Auster for $35K (yes that is right and there are a few out there) and they ar three seaters usually 906Kg MTOW and only need 140 Metres at sea level to lift off. Stick it on your own rural property or that of a friend (under cover) and all it will cost is the annual inspection / 100 hourly, fuel and required repairs. If you fly VFR and OCTA, all you need is a radio.

Soon you wont need a Class 2 medical and there is no annual membership or certificate fee. The only thing you don't get is insurance, which you have to pay extra for; that is the good value component of RA Aus membership.

That's a good idea but if the "old Auster" goes for a 100 hourly and the lame decides it need's a bit of a tidy up then you'll wish you were maintaining your own RA aircraft.

The Jabs that i learned to fly in were costing $1200 for the 100 hourly (done by a lame) and that's low hour late model aircraft with nothing to repair or replace other than the mandatory things.

Then there's a cherrokee i regularly fly in which had a $35000 compulsory overhaul due to hours but was running nice with good compression prior, within five hours of getting it back the engine quit on climb out with a lucky very low hour pilot in command (who has never flown since). He got it in to a padock safely and the engine went back to to the LAME shop where it was found the overhaul had been botched and caused a camgear to come free in flight..

Thats why I believe the person who has the most to lose will be the most carefull when it comes to maintenance and therefor should be allowed the opportunity to maintain thier own machine.

Reasonable budget for first RA plane: 15K, which will get you Thrusters, Sapphires, J3-type stuff and other interesting things. 50 to 75kt cruise, most often two stroke. Insurance is taken care of in membership and annuals are negligible.

Reasonable budget for GA plane: How much do you have! Apart from servicing costs and insurance, the general price of purchase is a lot more. Sure, you might be getting more plane... but how often do you really need three or four seats, let alone two? Costs run from 30k for a clapped out Piper Cherrokee to over 50k for a clapped out Cessna 172. Good stuff costs a lot more, and suitable a lot more to hangar, maintain and insure.

If you're weighing up registering between VH Exp. and RA for something then personally I'd just go RA... especially as 24 register craft can be flown in CTA with certified engines & transponder.

Comparison enough?

You will pay way over 100K for that 24 reg model and you will still need a PPL to fly CTA.
