Bad batch of Mogas

My fuel lines went soft and expanded with the C al 98 . That's why I started to look seriously into what was in this stuff !Once I had drained it out the fuel lines went back to their original shape

Yeah this fuel thing goes around and around. I've just had a discussion with a BP technical specialist and am awaiting a call back from the Caltex equivalent. (I do have an advantage that I can speak geek chemical language having had some training in the area). If you check with your Caltex SA info provided I suspect you may find that the high figures you were quoted for toluene content were actually for total aromatics (which is typically in that range in premium gasoline). Toluene content is likely to be the same or similar to what it is in BP fuels, i.e. between 12 and 16%. This distinction only matters if we want to have a uniform point of comparison between two different brands of fuel - your fuel lines may swell just as much if the total aromatics are at the high end of the range, regardless of how much of the total is toluene (the rest will be xylenes and cumenes which also make rubber swell though not as much as toluene I understand).

 

Here in WA there is only one refinery (BP Kwinana) and one import terminal (Coogee). Caltex buy their fuel from BP and then add their magic ingredients to it. I will wait to hear for certain from Caltex but I doubt these ingredients include toluene - it's more likely they buy premium blend from BP and add minor things. So.. if one buys Caltex Vortex 98 or BP ultimate here in WA you may just be getting the same thing.

 

There is a simple test to see if your fuel has an abnormally high amount of aromatics - the density will be too high. The spec is that it should not be more than 0.75 g/l (umm..and what do we use in our weight and balance calcs ??). I'm thinking that I might see what it would cost to buy a little densitomer and make it available for our club members to use. This would also help in monitoring the loss of volatiles in storage. If you have fuel with the right density, right colour and free from particles and water I think one can feel fairly confident about it. Goo from tank sealant etc if dissolved in the fuel would also show up as increased density.

Any way they have refunded the money and I've orderd one from Melbourne

I am glad us on here could help you save money mate as I don't like seeing others getting raped with their clothes still on, matter a fact don't like seeing it happen in anyway lol.

Mike , You've made the correct decision, your procurement method was just off a bit, but in the end it'll all be worth it. Like I know you live in the boonies, but next time your in a big town check out the motorcycle shops. Toluene in caltex vortex 98 is 35to48 %BP 98 in this part of the country SA is up to 17% ,all added to increase octane rating .

The caltex makes fuel lines go soft

Update for those in WA: Just spoke with Caltex Sydney office: Their Vortex 98 sold in WA comes out of the same tank as BP Ultima 98, just with the Colonel's 13 herbs and spices (trace things) that Caltex add to differentiate them from BP. That is, no addition of toluene or other aromatics (content stays at 16 - 18%, Toluene, up to 42% total aromatics). Nevertheless asked them to confirm with their distribution point here and revert. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that it is the same situation in SA and most other places. All of these companies say, as a matter of course, "we do not recommend the use of our motor fuels in aeroplanes". To which I respond "Yes - but Rotax do not recommend the use of AVGAS in their engines, so aren't you guys lucky ?".

Will that beer be put through the Mr. Funnel ? I hope so, I wouldn't want to find harder to pee than I already do.

In WA myself and found vortex was giving me a very black sooty exhaust.

 

Gone back to ultimate and it seems somewhat better.

 

A shame the manufacturers can't make a (mogas) fuel for aircraft, even in drums.

 

Glad you got your money back Mike.

 

Sounds like the seller didnt want to lose their listing and search ranking so jacked up the price to keep the listing but not make sales......

Hi Using the Mr F is great; something else worth considering is a zip cover to keep it in so it stays clean. I bought one from a site called Pumkin Head; ok price and it keeps the filter dirt free. Just food for thought.

I religiously use Mr. Funnel, but when using jerry cans I have become slack about static. I should get some clips and make up a static cord.

I had an engine failure after take of yesterday Lots of crud had gloged the fuel filter ,

I'm going to pre filter all Mogas from now on .

 

It was BP 98 , port Augusta

 

Landed ok with back up fuel system that hadn't been used so the filters were clean enough ,

 

But still had crud in them ,

Hiya mike yep me as we'll same supply same day only I ended up a write off in a paddock top it off my mate is now suing for damages no more free rides for me despite his walk away air crash I gave him first aid and sent him off in an ambo me I went home had a shower and went to hospital but as it turned out broke my back home now after 5days but I booked on and got a clearance for work so I can pay this bloke broken glasses shirt and jumper X-rays unreal no more free rides not even the mower it's all about $$$$$$ these days yea the fuel is a concern because you can bet this is going on elsewhere what is the filler these theives are using there are others as well just don't no it a major investigation is required one thing I know is my fuel is sweet soon as I mention that I got hailed Down, but a outlet testing should occur regularly or buy drum fuel this is a concern, this has been occurring for a while and kept quiet hope I get through my work ok 4 the next 6weeks and then I should be ok. And I use Mr funnel all the time but I think he must have been playing with Mrs funnel coz the crud gets through sticky gunk
