Once the fire got hold it would be only seconds before who knows what. Yep...but never let the obvious get in the way of a good 'story'... Just human nature for a certain percentage I guess. There have been examples of in-flight fires, a Stemme and a Colyaer come to mind, but a cockpit fire extinguisher would not have helped. Both these aircraft have engines behind the pilot. Now the Jabiru is inherently better with its engine in front of a robust firewall. And the point of the fire-engine story is that the fuselage fuel tank is not such a hazard as it might appear. It didn't catch fire at all. There is a strong safety case for being lighter. The argument for carrying an extinguisher would have to be statistically good to outweigh the increased risk of carrying that extra weight.
