Savannah sunshade

Has anyone worked out a sliding sunshade for the overhead view? Maybe some version like the RV or Sting aircraft have? I realize those are examples of canopy aircraft... I love the view in the Savannah but for those of us who get to make regular visits to the dermatologist, a cross country option would be beneficial.

I think Mark at Kyle Communications used that dark/reflective window tint used in buildings and cars.

A Savannah for Southern NSW

I'm going to do the same (when I get to that point): good quality tint comes in many grades, and really does cut out the uV etc.

You should try the UV here in OZ...worst skin cancer rates here in the world. Yes I used a UV 99% block film used on cars but it was quite expensive. I think it cost me $110 to get the top screen done but I have never been sun burnt yet in the 5 years or so I have been flying her. Also of course you can still view out the top. I was told it would fail and would come off well it is every bit as good today as it was when it was applied 6 years ago so maybe its whoever pus it on. The mob I used thats all they specialised in was doing high end car window tinting. It was not the darkest tint but was the most UV blocking tint I could get. Mabel will have the exact same thing done on her new roof top as well.

Thanks: no point in reinventing the wheel if what you used works well!

I did the same as Mark and took the Lexan to a tinting mob about a year ago and no problems with it.

I got a Tint film that blocks out most of the UV as well and works a treat.

Excellent! And we've got the fat wheels...now all we need is the loud music with the heaps of bass.............)

Seriously, though...sounds like an excellent solution to me...I jumped on line last evening and there are some very high tech films on offer...if you can believe the blurb...)

Guy, how are you finding your adjustable seats? They seem to be getting mixed reviews over here...

I've found the adjustable seats comfortable and very easy to take the seat out if you want to get them recovered or get into the underseat man hole is great and being able to adjust for leg room if needed for different people heights.

I really don't know what the downside would be unless your 6ft3" or taller, a little extra weight maybe but my Sav came in at 307 kgs so still can carry full fuel and luggage with 2 85 kgs blokes.

I like to know what reasons people are down on the adjustable seats ?

Thanks for that, Guy. Some folk seem to be finding them less than comfortable, but I expect that is a very individual and subjective thing. I'll just be happy to get into the air, for starters!

Another question: I'm very average shape & size (5'9" and was lean but now a little padded round the front). Any suggestions as to which position for the rudder pedals? Thanks.

I can't really answer that for you Bob,

I guess it's a case of putting the petals back and having the seat right back or having the petals in the forward position and having the seat forward a touch and if you got taller passengers they won't be so cramp for leg room.

Maybe someone of similar height to you can answer your question.

I did a bit of research into this for my sav, and they do say that the lexan gases off which can lead to bubbling. Hence they don't recommend using standard car tint.

There is a solar film made to suit lexan that blocks out 99% of uv rays and also reflects about 80% of the thermal energy. Great for keeping the cabin cool as I live in Qld.

Bill uses it in his sav and it works great.

It's made by Hanita films. It was the only mob I could find that made tint to suit lexan. I'm in the process of getting my hands on some. It is expensive. About $150/m x1500 wide

Yeah made one for my Alpi out of some fabric i found at an upolsters.cut panels to required shape and sewed them together with a slot to insert a wire in each panel to stifen the shade.T hen cut the surplus off a curtain rail for the slide, fit the small curtain track sliders to the centre of the curtain. Using double sided tape attached the sliding rail to centre of canopy, then fit shade with an end stop to both ends of rail.Have not got a pic of shade but will endeavour to take one and send to you .Cheers Pete

When I was there last, there was a bit pebble there. It is big enough to be a flight hazard.

Re the lexan and tinting. Had mine tinted with film by an automotive company. Still perfect 3 years later . Only problem was I found it still transmitted radiant heat on hot days so I opted for a roller blind as well as mentioned earlier by garymc. Bought it at Spotlight for very little. Cut it to shape and it works like a charm. Now have the best of both worlds and it works so well I would not be without them. If I had to choose one I think it would be the blind. Bob.

Bob my tint does also block the heat. Its quite surprising how much it does as well

So maybe best to get the one that does both. I have to source it again for doing Mabel so will try to get a brand etc for everyone to chase

Heat can be uncomfortable but ultra-violet will burn (and eventually cause death if one is susceptible to melanoma, etc.). It is very difficult to get automotive tinting that is successful in attenuating both. I know someone in Australia that wanted such film for their people mover to protect their kids and it seems to be one or the other. The silvery reflective stuff repels heat but is almost transparent to UV.

You say that your film works well for both UV and heat. So, Yes! let us know the brand when you rediscover the material.
