red750 Posted July 28 Posted July 28 A Virgin Boeing 737 was being towed to a hanger for maintenance on Sunday night when it became detatched from the tug and rolled into it, which tore the left side skin of the aircraft from the front door to halfway to the wing. 1
onetrack Posted July 28 Posted July 28 Ouch, that's going to require a little more than a tin of polishing compound! I wonder if the tug driver is looking for a new job, commensurate with his true abilities, right about now? - "Did you want fries with that?" 😢 1
facthunter Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Towbar became disconnected I believe.. Probably no one in the aircraft. Nev 1
onetrack Posted July 29 Posted July 29 And just how do towbars become disconnected? Lack of training, or lack of skills in the first place? One would presume that making sure a hitch was properly connected would be the primary instruction to a tug operator. After all, there's what? - $50M - $100M worth of aircraft at stake? - let alone the potential damage from a runaway aircraft rolling into airport infrastructure.
facthunter Posted July 29 Posted July 29 They Hook onto the Nosewheels and have limited strength. I can't recall any other incident where it came unhooked A TAA DC 9 that should have been disconnected but wasn't went under the Aerobridge at Tullamarine. damaging the cockpit area. Nev 1
facthunter Posted July 29 Posted July 29 The tow Bar actually turns the nosewheel, which can pivot 90 degrees. Nev
onetrack Posted July 29 Posted July 29 There's been at least a couple of these incidents .... https://www.popularmechanics.com/flight/news/a19904/iron-maidens-badass-boeing-jet-gets-taken-out-of-commission/ https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/news/laguardia-airport-tug-driver-stuck-b2137363.html
facthunter Posted July 29 Posted July 29 They are Overseas occurrences and not necessarilly detached. Interesting how they Make that engine Look about 4 times the size it actually is. Nev 1
facthunter Posted July 29 Posted July 29 In a lot of these I'd say Familiarity Breeds contempt. Unless you're on centrelines and the other things are where they SHOULD be you can Make Headlines easily. A tug can't stop an big plane easily either. No way should you you be moving fast.. Nev
