  1. Hi Jeff Welcome and go for it. Flex wing microlights are often referred to as trikes here.
  2. Open my email and find a couple of things that need urgent attention, and a heap of Rec Flying subscribed thread notifications. I'll just check them first before I attend to the important ones. Log in to Rec Flying and see a heap of new posts. Start to read through them, then look oh it's 9:30 :-) While I'm here I'll just see whats happening on chat. After a while they are dropping like flys on chat and I am really tied now. missed tea and got nothing done at night either so might as well go to bed and try again in the morning. In morning I decide to water my .................................... Pleased to know what the cause is - now what was it called A.D ?????? oh bugger
  3. Hi Martin Welcome "young fella" Great site, great people great info As Planey says, probably not a lot of cost difference between trike or RAA 3 axis, and we get on fine together ;). If you have already been down the PPL road, trikes may just give you the difference to make it more interesting. Bit like a motor bike and a mini I suppose
  4. The one in the for sale is only $22k and almost brand new. It has flown into my place - nice machine
  5. Hi Plastic Jerry's and always through a Mr Funnel into the ac Mind you I don't ever see any contamination BUT it only takes once to be a potential problem. I have seen my Mr Funnel so full of unpassed water it filled to the top and stopped passing fluid when processing some old crappy fuel at home NO not processing for ac ( or in fact any engine) use :-) So they do seem to work fairly well.
  6. Try this thread http://www.recreationalflying.com/forum/engines-props/92357-912-carb-rubber-flanges.html Ray
  7. mmmmm Maybe replace ( sorry repair ) the leading edge this time and repair the rest next time. Might not need any shipping between repairs ? depending on what you need long term and budget I suppose
  8. Hi Alf Pleased to see you got some good results Some pics of your install would be good for the SST guys up here to consider
  9. Hi Alf You should be able to invert your aerial without it hitting the ground. Waited until I went to the hanger to get my facts straight. Took a few pic this morning to show how they come out of the factory on the SST's in our hanger. Note the coke can has clearance under the aerial tip. From memory there is a join in the cable near the steering foot peg pivot and a short piece of cable to the radio - only just enough long enough though - no extra.
  10. agree And to change the subject do they still make Bex? It's a long time since I heard that name mentioned ;)
  11. I don't read it as a "Gotta get there" article Yes a good read, and while I am not advocating risk taking at all, I think the story needs to be read in context and we should not be too critical without full knowledge of the people and flight. This is just how I read it without any knowledge of the conditions, people or the event, and my limited trike experience. I hope my interpretation is correct, if it had been written by other than a student with instructor in the back I may well view it quite differently. ie written by a student who flew with an instructor in the back. Written to make an interesting article to read. From the story the instructors did not seem concerned, yes they changed strips after assessing conditions, was this for the students benefit / training / comfort? They were looking for a landing site that did not have a strong cross wind component, they did have a destination in mind, they just choose to check closer options for suitability on the way. We know everyone has a different bump tolerance, and students usually by far the least as it does (or can) build with experience. Their final return trip although "a high" for the students seemed to pose no landing problems for the experienced in the party. Seems to me they made reasonable decisions and plans along the way. Stuck to their plans, including tracking to alternate strips as planned. The lessons to be learnt from the article I guess should be. Make a plan before leaving, have alternatives and use them if required. If your not happy with the weather wait ( as they did) and go when you think it is suitable.
  12. When I tried it inverted ( the correct way up ) I did invert the mount as well , but good to highlight that that needs to happen. In my testing efforts I managed to loosen ( break ) the mounting base. This probably happened when I bent the mount bracket without removing the aerial base from the bracket first. The aerial still works but I have a new base ready to install next visit. Removal of the longer aerial section will be required to pack the wing up but that is just a matter of easily unscrewing it from the base. I also wonder if just a slight angle out ( perhaps 70mm) may have been sufficient rather than the larger angle I chose, but then I did want to try and fix it so went for more rather than less.
  13. Hi Alf Unfortunately hanger door height doesn't allow me to permanently install it aerial up. But I have on occasion turned it over for a trial. I do fly with a couple of sst's ( aerial on strut) up here and I believe I have experienced a small amount of shadowing from them, but no where near as bad as the king post inverted aerial installation. No testing carried out (no scientific basis ), just my impression from numerous communications during flight in company. Yes Len we can usually hear the Warnervale and Somersby traffic fairly clearly at Maitland if we tune in. I haven't discounted going the rabbit ear direction yet.
  14. Hi May be a but premature but as this thread has surfaced again. I have talked about my shadow problems before. Flying in company with quite a few different trikes it appears that this effect ( heard by me) is worst if communicating with new trikes. And completely absent on some that I have flow with. SO not necessarily the receive on my trike but the transmit on others ( and mine). Got me looking and thinking - that's dangerous Last week crusty and I modified our aerials mounted on the king post. Simply bending the king post top plate up to cause the aerial to sit away from the king post instead of being parallel - shown in pic I have noticed that on some original installations the aerial even angles in towards the king post slightly We have had one flight together so far with no communication problems like we had experienced in the past. Will keep you posted on our further evaluations and if this simple fix is really successful.
  15. Airborne usually offer / install a Lynx intercom ( and headsets ) with a microair radio, and they seem to work fine and are noise free. Maybe they use this system because of the more difficult exposed open cockpit situation. ???? Not really helping with a Microair fix, and if others use and have success as it seems then probably best to pursue those avenues before spending more $
  16. Sad to hear but most glad you are OK mate
  17. Works fine for me Tom 6:30 and now http://www.pemet.com.au/
  18. I have emailed him and he has replied so hopefully he may get to look at it soon. Just shows how we all like and miss his program.
  19. Apologies for the capitals - not aimed at you but merely to attract attention. I would hate to think someone decided not to go the BRS way ( and found themselves in the situation where they needed one) because they had seen this video, and made an early decision in their research not to pursue more info and making a correctly informed choice. Yes I do agree and did state that a malfunction could still occur BUT so to could ( and probably with similar likelyhood. The wings fall off The aircraft break in the middle The tail fall off Or simply the ac control wires/ linkages seize/break etc, etc Much more likely for Mid air collision with other ac or wildlife causing partial damage and loss of control Medical issue with pilot - not just heart problem but what about some sort of loss of vision or balance and I am sure many others Weather and turbulence can usually be avoided so may not be a valid reason, I am sure at times there is some weather is unseen and unpredicted so ???????? While I don't think the tiger country scenario is a valid reason to fit a BRS, we are all human and prone to make the occasional incorrect decision. As to expensive or gimmick. Think of it like insurance Flight insurance in the air probably runs at about 1.5% so for an ac of ( number out of air) $100000 value that's $1500 Life of chute ?? 8 - 10 yrs ( not sure) so thats $12000 Fall out of the sky in a bad way and your insurance will only be of value to your next of kin. Spend $7000 on a chute and you may just live to fly again, and maybe even salvage the ac. Sounds like reasonable value to me. I keep thinking of the saying Better to be down hear wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here. I think if the need ever arose It would be Better to be up here with a handle to pull and a chance to survive, than wishing you had spent the money on a BRS on the way down with little chance of survival. And No I don't have a BRS but I regularly consider the pros and cons.
  20. Hi Bill / Blue Just for your future reference That's part of Airborne
  21. This video is always pulled up as a reason that you don't want one. AND IS TOTALLY INVALID It is a very very early generation chute - it DID NOT have the safety features incorporated into todays BRS type devices. By the deployment I don't even think it is ballistic as the chute is dragged out by the small ( whatever it called ) chute Yes there is always a possibility of malfunction with any mechanical device. but like the airbag argument better to have when you really need it than wishing you had one, because if things are that pear shaped you chance of survival is pretty slim I have even read suggestions that there was some pilot error involved.
