  2. I have always driven a manual car so my left foot pressure tends to be higher then my right. Until I got the feel some of my early attempts at breaking C152 were sort of.....interesting. Good for frightening those young instructors, though.
  3. Hi Riley, It's not a traction engine, it's a steam roller. A Fowler DNA type 10-ton. Built by John Fowler Ltd (Leeds) in 1926. Imported by the NSW Department of Main Roads, one of a batch of 6.Worked with the DMR until the mid 50s then bought by Marrickville Council and used up to 1963. A mate and I bought it in 1964 for 35 pounds (would you believe there's no pound sign on my keyboard, what is the world coming to!!) It has been kept in "preservation" ever since and currently lives at the Campbelltown Steam Museum near Sydney, not too far from Camden. (www.csmm.com.au). Interestingly, a couple of other steamers from our museum have been used in The Great Gatsby film recently made in Sydney. Apologies to other forum-ites for the thread drift.
  4. If the coils are Bosch parts, try a Bosch agent. I had an Alfa Romeo years ago with Bosch distributor. When I broke the dizzy drive shaft I went to a local auto electrician with the Bosch model number of the dizzy. Of course you can't buy just a drive shaft but a whole new distributor was a quarter of the Alfa price.
  5. Hi Kaz, I think I was born an antique®. The trip in DNA was terrific - my first time in a DC3 and I was surprised how comfortable it was, if a trifle noisy. Had a bit of adventure leaving Temora. The starter motor on the RH engine failed so the ground crew performed a "New Guinea" start. Wind a length of rope around the spinner and pull it with a jeep! Took a few tries but once they synchronised the pull with "ignition on" away she went. Of course that made us late back into Bankstown and we found we were locked into the airfield until the pilot retrieved a spare key from somewhere.
  6. Yes, maybe so, Dazza. I've been looking for it since late December in two different shops, but they're both owned by the same bloke so maybe he's stopped stocking it.
  7. By the injuries it looks like the kid may not have been properly restrained. I suppose the only saving grace is that most members of the public would not know the a/c was overloaded, but of course CASA will.

  10. For a while now we have been dreaming about that block of dirt on which we can build our own airstrip, store our planes and indulge in flying when it suits us. I know people who do have their airstrip, be it on small acreage, part of a farming enterprise or in an air park. Recently discovered you can search keywords in the description on realestate.com.au. I tried "airstrip" "plane" "pilot" (and variants) and came up with a collection of ready-made or potential sites. In Qld there is no systematic approach - each Council has its own approach - some want zoning & planning approval, some don't want to know. What is your experience with finding land, getting an airstrip approved / established, landing / takeoff & circuit issues, Council etc. Sue
  11. Great idea, Alan. My only trip to Temora was in a DC3 - VH-DNA. Most appropriate as DC are (is?)my initials and DNA is the "type" of my steamroller.

  13. It's a pity you're not from Jersey, now they're really pretty. My avatar is from another hobby a bit divorced from aviation. It is a 1926 Fowler steam roller which I have been "preserving" since I bought it in 1964 aged 17.
  14. I once heard ATC deny take-off clearance at YSBK because of unreadable transmissions from an aircraft. I have also had to cancel a lesson in a C152 because the radio was not up to scratch.

  20. Just joined yesterday after watching the site for a while so thought I'd do the right thing and post. After a life-long interest in aviation decided in 2007 to learn to fly GA - at the age of 60. Unfortunately after 20 hours in C152 at YSBK and just coming up to soloing CASA decided my distance vision wasn't up to scratch so they declined my medical.I've decided RA is the way to go and hope to get back into flying later this year. Looking at some of the other newbies makes me jealous. So many people seem to be active aviators and even own or are building their own aircraft. Oh well!!See you soon Dennis
