State Aerobatic Championships being held at Murray Bridge airfield on April 2nd through 5th, 2014. Pilots who are not current members are invited to join the Adelaide chapter and you would then be eligible to compete, subject of course to having the required approvals and endorsements. Our chapter members would be more than happy to discuss this option with you at any time. To encourage pilots to enter and compete at their first aerobatic contest, the charge for joining the Adelaide chapter is just $29 for the year and the club has made the entrance fee for the ENTRY category $0.00 if you have got an aerobatic endorsement we urge you to come along and give it a try. You don't need to be really good to fly competition, just safe and keen, and the club will help you progress from there to go as far as you want to take it. Persons who are not members and not intending to compete are also welcome to attend, and we will do our best to show you the sport, and press you into service in the many simple volunteer jobs that go to make the competition run. To check up coming events - Go to the EVENTS tab, click on either Up Coming Events for a list of events, dates and locations, or Monthly View to look at what's on each day (including birthdays). I try to keep it up to date and have been cross posting to the Trips/Events/Spare Seats forum. I ran a poll on that forum about how much to cross post - of the few who voted, most wanted events on both the Events Calendar and the Trips forum. Sue

  13. The steam plane has been discussed in two previous threads - here's what I said on one of them: Go to Wikipedia and search for "Steam Aircraft". There is a good article there with a lot of references to the Besler steam aircraft. Scroll down to the bottom to find useful links to further information. What's missing is the critique on the design and the reasons it never went past a prototype. According to the 1930's article the engine weighed 180lb. (81kg) and it could do 400 miles on 10 gallons (38 litres) burning fuel oil at 800F (but didn't say how much). A condenser reclaimed the steam, cooling it to be reintroduced to the water tank, claiming 80-90% efficiency. One article claimed the Beslers were aiming for 100% reclamation "where upon they could remain aloft indefinitely." Journalists were clueless back then too! Another article said the engine was 500lb (225kg). There are a number of newspaper archive sites which have contemporary reports, but most appear to be of the "media release" variety - the Yanks being good at publicity. I guess the problems were the fear of sharing the craft with fire, fuel & boiling water and the logistics of including extra weight required for steam generation vs the internal combustion engine. They were also working on a steam driven car. Sue

  22. Vale Col Rodgers AOPA Members, Col Rodgers our Treasurer and a Board Director passed away Thursday afternoon 30/01/14 at the Sands hospital. This is a very sad day for AOPA and for me personally, I regarded Col as a close friend and a trusted mentor. Col recruited me to the AOPA board, he then nominated me as President and supported me through a very difficult period when our office was in disarray and our finances borderline. We turned AOPA around and Col as treasurer deserved a great deal of the credit for that turn around. I could always rely on Col's advice. he was a straight talker, told you what he thought and bore no malice if you disagreed, above all Col was an Aviator in the true sense of the word. I will miss him, AOPA will miss him and GA will miss him, but his legacy will live on in the AOPA of today, a vastly better organisation than the one that Col took the reigns of, during his time as President. There is not much more to say other than Col fought the cancer that took his life, right to the end, he was always positive planning ahead and keeping tabs on AOPA's finances and policy right up until Wednesday, the day before he passed away. This is indicative of the stature of the man that Col was, never a quitter, a man of courage and dedicated to AOPA and GA. I am glad that Jeff Muller our vice President and I were able to visit him at the hospital on Thursday 23 /1/14 to present his "Life membership Award" and spend a little time with him. His passing was unexpected, I guess we were all hoping that Col would beat the cancer because he was so positive, sadly that was not the case; Vale Col Rodgers. There is a celebration of Col's life taking place at All Saints Church, Hunters Hill, NSW on Wednesday 05 February 2014 @ 11am, followed by a wake @ 1pm at Hunters Hill Bowling Club for those wishing to pay their respects Phillip Reiss President AOPA Australia
  23. Happy 10th Birthday Rec Fly! Thank you Ian
  24. I have put approx 120 events in the Events Calendar (under the Events Tab). These can also be cross posted to the Trips/Events/Spare Seats forum, however I haven't been doing this. I have about 500 more to go - so I am asking what you prefer. The advantage of cross posting to the Forum (Trips/Events) is that the events are searchable (Calendar is not at present), and people can post responses. The down side is these Events will also turn up on "What's New" as I enter them. Anyone can post an Event, in either the Calendar and/or Trips/Events Forum. I am doing it to keep RecFly as up to date and as useful a resource as possible for Aviators. If I have posted an event and you would like changes/updates, contact me. As a First Class member I have rights to edit my post long after ordinary members, so I can keep things up to date. Alternatively you can post your own version, and set up your own RSVPs. Over to you - what do YOU want? Sue PS - by Monthly Meets I mean things like Angelfield Fly-in Breakfast every xth someday of the month. Campaigns - for example CASA offering AvSafety seminars in 50 locations.
