  1. A pilot has died in hospital after being seriously injured in an ultra-light plane crash near Ivanhoe in far western New South Wales. Emergency workers were called to a property on Balranald road, 50 kilometres south of the town, shortly after 7:30am. It is believed the 35-year-old was mustering cattle when he crashed. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-05-16/man-seriously-injured-in-light-plane-crash-near-ivanhoe/5457450?section=nsw Police from Barrier Local Area Command are continuing investigations into the crash and are being assisted by Recreational Aviation Australia, NSW Police Air Wing. http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/media_release_archive?sq_content_src=%2BdXJsPWh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGZWJpenByZC5wb2xpY2UubnN3Lmdvdi5hdSUyRm1lZGlhJTJGMzc3MzUuaHRtbCZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

  4. Keith, The GM is the servant of the Board and the Association, and as such assists the Board as well as staff. The new Board and Executive are looking at these issues and, no doubt, the GM has been tasked to gather this information. That's his job. If he asks for a straw poll (meaning "an unofficial ballot conducted as a test of opinion") then he is doing his job. It is not a vote. It won't force a change; but it does show that the issues are worth pursuing further because members who are sufficiently motivated to attend the Association's National event and go to the meeting are overwhelmingly in favour. The Board can then pursue this further, knowing they are not wasting their time. The magazine is one of the major costs - the same team who do the RAA magazine also do the AOPA magazine. Putting the two together would save a lot of duplication, work and money. The AOPA magazine has sections for the Warbirds and Helicopters; I'm not really into these, but I accept that others are and maybe some of the RAA readers may have to accept that some articles in a joint publication may not interest them either. You already pay for the magazine now, getting a discount to only get the electronic copy would suit me. My husband and I are members of both AOPA & RAA and we get 4 magazines. Getting only one paper copy for him to read and letting me read on-line would save lots of paper. The printed copy can still go to newsagents, but you could also allow a subscription to the on-line service for non-members. How often do you read a comment on this month's magazine followed by a chorus of "I still haven't got mine ..." On-line is available to all at the same time. AOPA produces an on-line, members only, publication between issues that addresses things the general public wouldn't be much interested in. Less gloss, more info, more timely. The GM never said ("in another thread") that he was too busy - if you read it again someone else said they thought he might be too busy to read through the mountain of posts on this site. The feeling from those who have had contact with our GM is that he is incredibly hard working, pro-active and dedicated to RAA. I sense that we have one of the best Boards and Staff that we have had in recent times. WE steer this ship, through our elected Board, who are all volunteers with other jobs, families, hobbies & pursuits; so they employ capable people to take some of the work off their shoulders - as it should be. Attend the meetings and help steer the ship. Don't take a hatchet to the hull. As for SAAA - I find them very helpful, well organised etc, but I have not been a member long. I am aware some of the early AUF members have an axe of some sort to grind with them, but I am not sure what the issues were. The Boards of both are co-operating to stage a very successful AusFly at Narromine last year and this. Perhaps it is time to for members to forgive and forget? Sue
  5. Pilot named: http://www.queenslandcountrylife.com.au/news/agriculture/general/news/man-killed-in-muster-crash/2698238.aspx Known to us as Desert Fox Property Services (had a Skyfox) VH-SWQ Cicare CH 7B http://www.cicare.com.ar/en-ch-7b.html RIP Condolences to the family
  6. The good looking one. Bear in mind he is now 7 years older, whereas I have not aged a day. We both went to Natfly 2003 - he noticed me there as the solitary female wandering the flight line, whereas I can't remember seeing him. I moved from Barcaldine to Springsure and ended up in the house across the road, 6 months after his wife died. His pick-up line; "I'm building a plane. Would you like to come and look?" Married 13 months later.
  7. We will be there again this year; planning to do all three days (it was 4 days in 2013). Look for the tall (the talkative one) & short (the better looking) both drooling over planes & engines. Sue

  13. Lou, Good to have you on board! Sue
  14. The nature of work is changing - both my husband and I work for companies that no longer recognise public holidays. Easter is a normal work day, we only get it if it falls on our rostered days off. The impact of this on our community is that our town can no longer muster enough people available on weekends, or weekly to field a footy team, or a volunteer fire brigade and attendance at events is down. This has impacted on us and our Fly-in attendance. In previous years we were able to go to Natfly, the only decision was if we wanted to this year. Now we can't. The stars aligned in 2010 and won't again until 2016. So that may partly explain the drop in attendance (well, two of us ......) Husband suggests that every year is too often - perhaps every second year. He prefers endlessly walking the flight line and exhibitors, constantly talking, looking and learning (and spending) I prefer the seminars, but also like the walking His pet hate is constant PA chatter drowning out the sound of iconic engines - cut the airshow banter to introductions only Loved Narromine's close-in friendly atmosphere (have been to Temora, but not for a Natfly - so can't compare) Move the major days to Sat/Sun leaving Fri & Mon for travel. I remember driving all day Friday to find it winding down Sat afternoon. Loved SAAA Ausfly 2013 and planning to attend 2014. Appreciated RAAus being there too. Sue
  15. We couldn't make Natfly (we are both working) so I was keen to see what was happening on the busiest day - nothing. Webcam, despite assurances after last year that there will be multiple views, is still not working. The Natfly web site didn't have much leading up to the event, particularly the "News" pages. The exhibitor listing does show 22 of 90 sites vacant (25%) and I didn't get a sense of rising excitement. RecFly is a bit quiet too - in prior years there was a constant flow of photos and commentary. Where's young Tommo when we need him? Keen to know what I am missing out on to make me more annoyed about not being there. Sue
  16. .... turned his celebrated rump for the check .... this explains the deserted scene on the Ratfly webcam and the title: Natfly Temora Airport 2012 Looking to the North
  17. Recently received some advertising for this product - MXO-AV Aviation Fuel and Performance Enhancer - saying it has been around since 1940's - promises to solve fuel problems related to the use of low or unleaded fuel. It mentions Ethanol issues, but does not say it addresses them. Glowing reference from Gilgandra Aero Club and a Gyro & Sky Fox owner. Anyone have any further experiences with this? Sue
  18. I am still GA - C152 - but it is in bits getting a very sloooowww refurbishment & SIDS inspection, but also RAA. We have a very basic Wheeler Scout (wing needs recovering) which my husband is now too heavy to get off the ground, so it is all mine ... and a Lightwing (with an instructor), a home built RANS S7 Courier and a home built Karasport which is over 20 years old and RAAus has only just asked for plans and data set, so it is sitting there waiting for us to draw & calculate. There's a point where too many aircraft means more time spent working on them and less time flying. Right now the balance has swung to nil flying to 100% working. That's probably the down side of RAA and being able to build and do your own maintenance; its a temptation to fiddle around endlessly. Our aim is to actually fly in to a fly-in, something we have not managed for a few years. How about you - what is your chariot of choice? Sue
  19. Kanga, We are also from the Central & Southern end of Qld. What sort of flying are you into? Sue
