  1. I have only approached other pilots on the ground when I heard nothing from them to find out why they didn't make a radio call. In 2 incidents their radios were not transmitting but they thought they were and in one it was not transmitting or receiving. The discussion was useful for all 3 as they agreed to get their radios checked, well that's what they said anyway.
  2. I don't give a rats which aerodrome I am visiting or my own local, I never just give one call, EVER. First there is my 10 mile call, next there is my overhead & joining call, then there is my established circuit call. If nothing is heard or seen that may be the last call. These are the minimums. If I have not been further than 10 miles (never happens but it could) I'd give a 3 mile joining call & the rest follows. If there are other aircraft seen or broadcasting, then it is establishing radio communication & visual. If that can't be done & it has happened then I'll stay at 1500 & watch till visual is established. My SE2 is useful but at circuit distances virtually useless. Once on the ground after any situation I'll always approach the other pilot to get their comments. Once I was cut off by a C172 & after the later discussion we found his radio was not working. Initially I wanted to yell and chastise him but that never gets any resolution.
  3. Tuning the aerial to the frequency band you most use will improve performance quite a lot. As I fly mostly in CTAF & uncontrolled airspace. I tuned the aerial to 126.7. I monitor area but as they have a powerful transmitter reception is no problem.
  4. We have all 3 heights flown at our aerodrome, twins & turbos 1500, singles 1000 & gyros/trikes 500. Faster heavier aircraft fly wider circuits but lighter aircraft flying the same or similar speeds can fly much tighter circuits. This is where good visual contact and clear concise radio calls are essential as the one flying a tighter circuit could end up in conflict with the one flying the wider circuit.

  6. it will be interesting to find out the cause of the engine failure. A Sling went down on the Beach North of Coffs about a year ago. It suffered a catastrophic engine failure & like this one suffered no airframe damage. It had to be airlifted by helicopter off the beach

  8. $500.00 freight for a few small items IS outrageous. There is little justification for such an amount. This happens all the time especially with US freight companies like Fedex, UPS & DHL. There are always cheaper alternatives, you just have to wait a bit longer. I inadvertently selected Fedex purchasing from Aircraft Spruce when building my aircraft back in 2014. It arrived in 3 days. A $6.00 snap fitting for my air riveter cost $59.00 in freight. If I'd selected the slower option the cost was $9.00.
  9. As I recall there was a lengthy discussion on the spin characteristics of the Bristell when an instructor & student died when they got in to a flat spin a few years ago. The location of the horizontal stabiliser apparently may create a shadow making the rudder ineffective once the flat spin commences making it impossible to get out of.
  10. The wings being torn off would have absorbed a lot of the energy. Given the condition of the fuselage and the type of aircraft the actual impact speed is likely to have been much lower than it would have been with a higher performance aircraft. I have no idea of it's performance envelope but I imagine it would cruise at between 70 & 80 knots Max.
  11. Glad the pilot is not seriously hurt. Any large tree seems to be a magnet for crash landing aircraft. Even if there is only 1 tree in a paddock the aircraft will hit it.
  12. 1500 Ah is a bit of an overkill. They would run your fridge without charging for over 2 weeks on a full charge.
  13. The Jabiru supplied coil has the exact length of copper strand lead and connector to the distributor cap. I noticed that some others have a length of lead which you need to cut to length and install the end connector and push fit rubber cap.
  14. That is a different part No to the one supplied by Jabiru. Once I installed the second coil, Honda part No 30500-ZE2-003 my engine has run better than it ever did before
  15. Modern EVs have quite sophisticated Battery Management Systems and is one on the main reasons for their long expected life. My EV will balance the batteries every time it is charged to more than 60% of its capacity when charged from an AC outlet which is a slow charger. My home EV charger has a maximum output of 32 Amps single phase. Fast DC charging will not balance the batteries & if the vehicle is charged for a long period time using fast DC chargers, the car will tell you to use an AC slow charger to balance the batteries. MG provide a 10 year 250,000km warranty on all its EV batteries & in China & Thailand they provide a lifetime warranty capped at 20,000 km a year. This demonstrates how good modern Li-ion (NMC & LFP) batteries are with BMS systems.

  17. Once you set up an ADSB ground station and register it with FR24 &/or Flightaware you become one of hundreds of thousands of ground stations updating the global network. The Raspberry Pi system is easy to build and operate and cheap. It used to only cost $40-$60 to get going but prices have increased quite a bit but $1-200 is still pretty cheap.
  18. Five point harnesses are the best and most secure. You can't slide out under them. However all harnesses should be adjusted so that they hold you firmly in place without discomfort. Any slack will cause some damage to your body in the event of a crash, the very least being severe bruising. I have 4 point harnesses in my aircraft and can easily adjust the shoulder straps in flight by grabbing the tab and pulling it up to loosen that side and the same for the other side in order to reach over to get something etc. Tightening is just as easy by pulling the main adjustment strap down. I always fly with my harness firm as unexpected turbulence then doesn't throw you around. Tightening harness straps for landing is part of my forced landing procedure, immediately following unlatching the canopy.
  19. SE2 will connect to Ozrunways automatically when the SE2 is connected to the device via WiFi. OzRunways will pick up other OzRunways traffic with or without ADSB, as well as direct ADSB out equipped aircraft. As far as I know they have different background colours. You may see the aircraft twice as the Ozrunways equipped aircraft data has some latency given it has to transmit through the mobile data network whereas ADSB direct is virtually instant. Direct ADSB in traffic is shown as green in most systems. Depending on the software this can change to yellow where there is a possible conflict & then red when the conflict and distance reaches a specified threshold. Again depending on the Navigation software traffic can be filtered out to avoid clutter. In Enroute FP only ADSB out enabled traffic less than 20NM horizontally and less than 1500 metres vertically will be displayed so you won't see all the RPT flying overhead at 35,000 feet.

America didn't lose 3500 ships during the battle of the Atlantic, the Allies as a whole did and they sank 783 U boats and 47 surface ships including 4 Battleships, the first of which was the Bismark. The great majority of merchant ships were British and escorting warships were mainly from the Royal Navy and Canadian Navy.
  23. Everything is made in China these days. Pay a good price and you get exceptional quality. iPhones are all made in China now. My car was made in China & has a 10 year warranty. Construction quality and materials are excellent. Even motoring critics said the fit & finish was better than some Mercedes Benz products.
  24. Jabiru Gen 3 uses Honda transistorised coils. They are not pulse magnetos in the traditional sense so you can't hand prop a Jabiru engine as they require 300RPM to activate. Jabiru has these in stock. I replaced both coils on My gen 3 when I found the originals which were Honda copies began misfiring at different times. This manifested in me thinking I had a crook plug or HT lead. With the correct coils the engine runs very sweetly. See photo of the correct part attached. I tried to source these elsewhere but with freight etc it was cheaper from Jabiru. Note these are for the 3300 6 cylinder engine but I think the coils are the same for the 2200.
