  1. That brings back memories. I remember we trained for it but in reality had a lot more real cable breaks than we had simulated ones! Nothing like trying to fix a cable, with 10 of you pulling it tights, in the middle of winter on a wind swept airfield.
  2. It starts at 12:20 and there is a break about an hour later, this will be easy to come and go. I am flying in for lunch, and to see the Spitfire and Me109! Flying Programme - Brisbane Valley Airshow
  3. I can't find any details on when they will close to arriving/leaving aircraft due to the airshow though? Anyone know? I need to time flying in and out due to paying by the hour for the rental plane!
  4. This looks like it could be a good one: http://brisbanevalleyairshow.com.au
  5. Will definitely do that Frank. Just want to see if anyone else has done something similar in the area and may have a route they can share, or also want to see if t is even allowed.
  6. I want to get some more class C practice, really just getting a code and transiting at least. I can go to Gold Coast, but what is the best way there that gets me into class C? From YCAB can I get clearance and a code to climb up into BNE class C and then stay in class C direct to Gold Coast, or is even asking BNE going to get an immediate refusal? I know I can go class G via TVT or class D via YBAF until south of BNE before going into class C, but I want to try get into it beforehand, possibly not even going to Gold Coast (due to cost of the flight only), but just getting the practice of planning for and calling up BNE. Any ideas or experiences to share please? Cheers Ryan
  7. Was there fuel at St George? I can't find a mention of it in the ERSA and am going to be heading that way soon.
  8. Did I see a thread somewhere that this place was open and had a new runway? I am looking for places to fly where you can have lunch and I am sure there was a post on Kooralbyn?
  9. It's going to be the C172 Pearo, so I better avoid the road! I have seen the pictures of those trikes, must have been a lot of engine trouble all at once!
  10. Thanks, I am going to call Scott on Monday. I called the pub and they said they will pick us up. I am trying to find somewhere closer so I save them a long round trip and I save a lot of time, so I have emailed the council as well. Cheers Ryan
  11. I've just realised I have been looking at the SAAA site for last year, so am a month out on the dates. I am glad I didn't book anything, but I bet others have as a search on Wotif shows everything booked out in September! Is this actually going on, given there is nothing on the website? The only one I see is Oz-Kosh 2016 Aviation Spectacular!. There is not enough on it to actually suggest there will be anything there. I am not keen to commit if there is no evidence of some planning around this, as it is a long way to fly and a lot of money to find a few lone pilots sitting there.
  12. I am still trying to find a way to fly to Nindigully Pub. The closest on a WAC is an airfield called "Chelmer" that I would say is a farm strip. However there is no way to get information on it, it is way to small for ERSA and probably very private. Does anyone have a country airstrip guide that may have it listed please? I want to see if landing there is an option. Thanks for the help. Ryan
  13. I went the first year it was Ausfly, and it was perfect weather all weekend. I am thinking of it again this year but not sure there is any accommodation left, and the tourist park just has an engaged tone. Might need to stay in Dubbo but I don't want to fly up and down at the end of the day.
  14. Off Cape Morton and work your way down the coast of the Strodbrokes. Or up, see which way the VFR lane is meant to go. I have seen plenty mid morning. There are legal limits to how close you can be. And common sense says have one fly and one look lest you circle low and slow and get distracted and the ocean rises up and smites thee.
  15. You need as long as you need. Forget quoted hours. Everyone is different and it is purely up to you, and you can't actually control your own abilities. But you control yourself the most, not the instructor. In terms of time anything can happen. From being recommended for the test to actually taking it a month passed for me, due to weather and instructor availability. So it takes as long as it takes. Just go along at your own pace and enjoy yourself.
  16. I just did it. Passed the PPL test on Friday. It took 3 hours to solo on a C172. About 3 more and I had the RPL. Then another 10ish to get all the way to PPL. I also did about 5 hours private hire just to practice and get confident. You don't need to do the RPL but it is good practice, and lets you do private hire as you prepare for the PPL. You have to write the BAK set by your school then the PPL exam set by CASA. You have to do 2 hours instrument flying as well as several trips into and through controlled airspace. I did Archerfield, Sunshine Coast and Gokd Coast. You may do it in a lot less. For me Most of it was me refreshing myself on how to navigate and do all the things we forget between BFRs. I think I learned more in a permanent way now due to the revision than when I did my Pilot Certificate years ago. To cut down in time do it from controlled airspace to start with instead of flying to a class D. Also find a school who can show they have a plan to convert you and arn't making it up as they go along. Good luck Ryan
  17. I got a text message yesterday telling me my membership was due. No letter or email in advance. It wants me to log on, but I have no way I can find of registering. What am I meant to do? Is there an easier way to do this?
  18. You do need a PPL, and to apply in advance to get a temporary FAA license which is based on your foreign one.
  19. I'm definitely up for the lunch. It was a smooth flight there, and it was nice to see some old friends and the house is a slice of history that is worth sharing. And it was nice to sit in the sun in the gardens! Thanks for putting it on. It is a great long tar runway, and easy to find, even if like me you got lost. Just follow the road right past it!
  20. Phone the shop there: Orchid Beach Trading Post | Rentals | Fraser Island, Queensland I was last there about 3 years ago so things may have changed, it was a great smooth strip then. But the shop runs it and mows it etc. so ask them.
  21. I'm planning to attend. The start time of 8:30am, is something happening or is that when you open up? What time are the masses actually getting there?
  22. Looks like it is on again on the 25th, this coming Saturday. I will be there in a C172, a couple of friends and a picnic basket!
  23. Is another one planned with a date yet? I want to book the plane for the next one. Ryan
  24. I have been told that a VH registered airplane cannot be refuelled from a half drum or jerrycans etc. but should only use a sealed drum from someone like Shell. I can understand the technical reasons but I can't find a reference to a CAO or similar on it. Does anyone know the reference? Thanks for the help. Ryan
