  1. Morning forumites, Just a bit more information on the Aviation Show on the 19th of Nov. Typically, those who fly in do so in the last hour before the airspace closes. If the day is good, the airspace in the CTAF is alike a swarm of bees, lots and lots of aircraft trying to get into the circuit and landing and lots of locals trying to get out for the day. So if you are flying in, leave early and try to get in before the last hour before the airspace closes. You can make your way to my hangar on taxiway E, the only one with a windsock and have some coffee and morning tea (homemade scones and such), then wander down to the Museum which will open at 8:30am that day. Cazza
  2. Hey forumites, If you decide to come to ytem for the big Museum fly-in, call in to our place on the airpark for a coffee or whatever in the hangar before or after the show. We are at 38 tenefts (10 elementary flying training school, efts). Cazza
  3. Hey Lyle, great idea. Will get on to Airservices and see what we can come up with. Cazza
  4. Hey Don!!!!, Will try to contact Wayne. Remember last year he was a last minute fill in for Steve Bell's Thursday session and he had to leave on Friday after a one-hour session. The fact that we discovered he is brilliant at presenting is a BONUS. Anyone else you want to recommend? Also I need an IT person to be on call in case presenters can't get their ppt to work. IT people who are coming to Natfly, please put up your hands!!!!!!!!!!!! cazza
  5. Well lads, I am working away to line up some forums and workshops. EAch year, members of this forum give me suggestions on seminars or workshops they would like to have provided. So here is your chance. What do you want? I am especially interested in rag and tube seminars. I am also looking for people to put up their hands to conduct a forum, workshop, or even a rountable discussion. I am getting hangars for the program. So I need suggestions and I need help from you. Are you willing to 'host' a hangar, that is introduce the presenter, make sure they stay on time, tell people where the loos are, shut the hangar up at the end of the day? I also need someone who will man the PA system, be the 'voice' of Natfly so to speak. Help please. Cheers, Cazza
  6. Hi Koreelah, great idea. The Board won't do that, they expect the coordinator to do that. Will ask Dave to complile a list. Carol
  7. Hi Turbo, Just to clarify a couple of things. There haven't been any meetings about Natfly. Dave C. is still the coordinator and I am still the organiser until the Board does something different on Sept 24, which is fine. I am still on the subcommittee until the Board decides otherwise. Technically I am doing my job and in a way that will support the future coordinator, whoever that might be. The Temora Council has asked me to be on their organising committee anyway to assist them in making sure this event is great. That's why this thread is here. Cazza
  8. Hello everyone. Thanks to all of you who have put up your hands. Dave, I think its great you want to be the king of 95.10 and 95.25. There are a few new hangars going up around the place. I will try to find your group a 'base or home base' to hang out and talk 95.10, etc. Can I just make it clear, folks, that the Board does NOT do the program for Natfly. Everyone has input into the program, in terms of what they want, the the most powerful group are the members. I sit down and organise forums by request from members, and staff. No one from the Board in 6 years of organising the program, no one has ever complained about the program or told me not to do something. The Board does not get involved in that level of detail. They appoint a coordinator (Dave Caban is still the coordinator until September 24, and the Board may appoint him again) and the coordinator rings me up and asks "how is the program going?" That, folks, is the extent of the Board involvement and the extent of the Coordinator involvement in the Program (forums, seminars, workshops). There is a Natfly Subcommittee with a Subcommittee Charter. I wrote it, I got it past by the Board, and the three menbers are me, Dave Caban and the CEO and it reports to the Board, who doesn't care about the detail. They just leave it to us. Until the Board informs me that I am no longer on the Committee or no longer needed I can do one of two things: One, act like a petulant 4 year old and let Natfly fall in a heap and disappoint all the members who fly to Temora from Western Australia, Darwin, Queensland just to 'teach them a lesson', or act like an adult who has a passion for this organisation and wants to ensure that whomever gets the coordinator title has as much support as possible. My 2 cents. Cazza
  9. Hi Burbles1, It would be absolutely great if things worked as you have outlined. But the Board doesn't seem to work that way, at least it didn't the years I was there. 1. There was a plan. The Council had a list of jobs they had to do, the office has a list of jobs, the Operations people look after everything to do with ops, and I had the responsibility of the program. So there was a plan of attack. 2. One problem is, that every job needs many more people to take responsibility for aspects of it. Marshalling, for example, has always been an issue with never enough people involved. Finally a resident of the airfield here put his hand up and organised the Marshalling which went well last year. He is planning on continuing and improving it regardless of who is coordinator. 3. We always put out a call for volunteers in the magazine and we get a few, but it is too little too late. Also our coordinator has a full time job, so the coordination is done by phone and when he arrives at the airfield. 4. What I am trying to do is gather keen people who are willing to take on some of the jobs I had to do, to ensure we have the expertise working on whatever aspects need to be done. 5. THe Board does not have an overall plan, the Board leaves it to the coordinator and his team (me, the council, the office, the operations people). 6. There is a Natfly Subcommittee with a charter to look after Natfly, but the charter deals with policy - not specifics. I understand what you are saying and I think it is a great idea to wait, but venues, equipment, presenters, need to be booked now, because we need to have something in the December Magazine so that people can decide if they will spend Easter at Temora or not. The deadline for copy for the December Magazine might be in late October. Information should be put up on the website. Surely gathering bodies who want to help now is not going to be a detriment to whomever gets the title. Natfly used to be one venue with forums. Now it is several hangars with workshops, forums, seminars which require enormous amounts of planning and execution. AV equipment, screens, spare data projectors, computers, and IT person on standby to assist presenters, locking and unlocking private hangars, getting chairs, tables, coffee urns set up, changing the program when a hangar suddenly is not available...the list goes on. I agree we need to have someone with your skills and expertise to coordinate Natfly. It has grown beyond the point where volunteers who work full time can do the whole thing. But even then you would need willing bodies. That's what I am trying to get. Cheers, Carol
  10. But David, my sweet.... :rofl:surely the problem lies not with the aircraft, but with the beauracracy that cannot deal with organising separate licensing and separate limits for flying low, slow, rag and tube. They will argue that if you limit a paddock basher to 300 feet and requirements to remain outside of airfields, etc., that there will be so many infringements it will impossible to regulate and become a safety issue. Am I being totally naive? Cazza
  11. Come on fellas, I love my jab, I love my jab, I love my jab, etc. I also loved my gazelle, loved my gazelle, etc. cazza
  12. After Natfly 2011, a number of people on this forum put up their hands to help for 2012. This thread is an attempt to get together a group of keen people who are willing to be responsible for an area of Natfly organisation. Here are some issues surrounding this. 1. We don't know yet who will be the Board appointed Natfly Coordinator 2. Doesn't matter who it is, once we know after the Board meeting in late september, it would be helpful to present him with a Team of People who have done some 'behind the scenes' legwork and are ready to go to make his life easier. 3. Generally the Natfly Coordinator communicates to Ops people, Council People, the Office and Me by phone and doesn't actually turn up at the Venue until a couple of days before Natfly begins. So all of the program, food, entertainment, etc has to be organised by other people anyway. 3. What if he doesn't want us? I can't imagine that happening. Both candidates live far away and one has never had any organisational experience with Natfly, so I think he'll be thrilled, especially since none of the candidates for Coordinator live in Temora, know the merchants, townspeople, helpers, hangar owners. Natfly is of the members, by the members and for the members. We are members. It's our show. We want to help make it as good as possible. 4. I have done a lot of legwork, because things have to be booked and planned. They can be cancelled, but if someone else books the venues, then we are in trouble. 5. This is a positive member initiative, like the GYFTS program. So I am asking anyone who put their hand up a few months ago, to contact me here or PM, or ring or email and let's have a conversation and be ready to go when we know who the Board Annointed Coordinator is. Cheers Carol [email protected] 0407574467
  13. Hi turboplanner, I actually don't know what is happening now, I only have my interpretation of what was happening when I was on the Board. Ian is still on the Board, so he is your man for up to date info. Cazza
  14. Am happy to hand over 'little black book' to new Board Members. Cazza
  15. Hi Ed and Don, I am a passionate member of this organisation and of course I continue to work for it. I am in the States now negotiating with a member of staff from Van's Aircraft to get them to come to Natfly and run sessions for the prospective and interested aircraft builders. Because I have organised the program for Natfly for 6 years, I have many contacts, not just the locals, but the people with skills and knowledge that are willing to provide forums. So I am more than happy to do as much or as little as is asked of me. Several people on this forum have put up their hands to help and it would be good if we could carve up the responsibilities; someone to organise the program for non-pilots (ladies), someone to organise the dinner, someone to organise the aircraft judging, someone to do the program, someone to organise something for the kids etc. I am also beginning to write some new educational articles which I will in time submit to our new magazine. I am not upset with the organisation. I served it well and I will continue to if needed. I am glad you lot are putting up with the politics and that means I have more time to devote to the areas in which I can make a difference. Best of luck. Cazza
  16. [Hi Ed and Don, As you know, Iwas doing quite a lot of jobs for the organisation as a Board Member. It became very difficult and time consuming when I had to contact the office who contacted a member, who then asked the member to contact me, because of the privacy document wording. The Board passed a motion to change the document to say that no information would be given out to anyone except Board members engaging in BOARD business for the BOARD. That would allow those Board Members only who actually work for the organisation to contact those members they needed to contact without going through the office and wasting more time and money. That was passed in 2009. At every Board meeting I asked if the documentation had been updated and it still hasn't. It required the changing of only a few words. I know this is not the mass distribution you are talking about, but you have to know how difficult getting anything done can be - even something simple. Cazza
  17. Hi Lorraine, There is always next year and there are lots of things you can do as a member. Organise a workshop on maintenance, weather, the new CASA instructor syllabus, take on the historian role, or put your hand up to be in charge of something for Natfly. Love to chat to you if you are interested. Cheers, Cazza
  18. Congratulations to Gavin, Don, Ed and Bill for their successful bid and I guess I owe at least three of you dinner. The winds of change are in the air!. Thanks to all of those who made the effort to stand. There is always next year!! Cheers, Cazza
  19. Hi Nick, 'Herding cats" is EXACTLY the right phrase. Cazza
  20. Hi everyone, As I was on the Board when the magazine issues were being discussed, I thought I'd let you know how the process worked. 1. New editor made it very clear that the magazine would reflect the organisation's interests and views (via the Board). He emphasised that the magazine was ours, not his. He insisted that the Board have input into the design and name. One of the Board members tried for weeks to get the rest of the Board to come up with ideas for the name, light flyer, fly light, sport flyer, sport plane, recreational pilot, and a stack of other names. It was like pulling teeth to get a decision on the name. We went round and round and finally a short list emerged and then we voted (I think). Try to get 13 people on this forum to do that task and you can imagine how long it took. Then the editor sent us 20 or more cover designs to work on and that went round and round and many of the Board didn't make any contribution to the process. So that is how the name and the design came about. 2. As far as it being late, the editor is not the entirely responsible. I remember the previous editor saying that they had to wait on the 'regular' important features, president report, manager report, etc, because if one person was late getting theirs to the editor, it held up the entire magazine. 3. Finally, our managers have to read the draft and approve articles. If there is an article all typeset and in the magazine that they feel should be deleted, then the editor has to fill that space at the last minute with something else. That's how it works, and that's probably why it is late. But I haven't spoken to him. cazza
  21. Hi Sue, one other thing. You comment that "we will have to go with whatever this person wants Natfly to be." is not exactly on the mark. The BOARD decides what Natfly will be. For years they resisted any kind of fly-past or showcase. One reason is the enormous paperwork required by CASA and the other was the enormous amount of money for insurance. When Temora was not an aerodrome you needed a radio to come into, the Operations manager felt it was usafe to go down the path of airshows when blokes were coming in out of the farms for a day without a radio and didn't read their magazines first to even know it was happening. The Board has also constituted a Natfly Committee who makes proposals to the Board about the direction. So I amend your statement to: We will then have to go with whatever the Board of RA-Aus decides". As I said before, as organiser, I just organised jobs I was given, and jobs that needed to be done (clean hangars, clean hangar toilets, put up signs, answer the phone, find accommodation for people, answer emails,) I didn't make executive decisions like Budget, airshow or no airshow, etc. Organiser was an honorary title. So the Committee takes it to the Board, and then back down the chain of command. Hope you didn't mind the lesson in our governance. Cheers, Cazza
  22. Hi Sue and Everyone, Glad to see all the enthusiasm. A Couple of points for clarification. 1. THere is a Board member already who has been Natfly co-ordinator for many years, Dave Caban, and he is still Natfly Coordinator. 2. When Natfly moved to Temora and because I was on the Board of RA-Aus, live on the airpark and have organised the program for Natfly for 6 years, the Board kindly gave me the title of Natfly organiser in recognition of the enormous amount of work required to pull all facets together. 3. There are three groups that guide the planning for Natfly; the Board of RA-Aus, the Staff of RA-Aus and Temora Shire Council. EAch group has a list of tasks on its agenda and believe me, planning has already started for next year. All of the feedback received by the Council and this forum will be tabled at our meeting next week. Please do not think I or anyone else do things at the last minute. 4. I am given a list of jobs to do and I work with the STaff and Board to see their wishes are carried out here on the ground. If the ops manager rings me and needs information, assistance, I work to achieve those results for him. I do not organise the whole event, I do my bit and help the others because I live here. 5. I am not sure if the Board is considering rolling Dave Caban as coordinator or if one of the members is thinking of moving here to do all the things that have to be done on site, but I am thrilled to bits that other volunteers are putting their hands up to do jobs. Please don't get discouraged. Your ideas will have to go through the Board, through the Council to see if they can be accommodated. Then the people who live on the airpark and own the hangars and the property will make a decision. For example, the business people wanted to have a market on good Friday here, but since the properties are privately owned, the owners decided the liability was too great and the idea, though good, was canned by the businesses. 6. Traditionally I have put in the report to the Board on the Natfly preparations completed and in progress by all groups. I am happy someone else can do that. Traditionally I have written thank you letters to all volunteers that I know about (70 last year). I am happy that I can jump in my Jabiru and fly into the sunset without weeks of letter and report writing. And I am glad someone else is putting their hand up to be responsible for the organisation. Events like this can get stale without an influx of new blood. Whoever does my job will have my vocal support. Cazza
  23. Hi Scotty, I think it sounds a good idea and will pass it on to the new Natfly organiser. Cheers, Cazza
  24. Hi Sue and everyone, I am humbled by your thanks, but if Natfly is going to grow ( and there are many of the old guard who want it to remain as a chat fest with a cup of tea and nothing else), then we need people with skills and passion to take on a job and do it properly, on time and on a budget of nothing. Sue there is a partial list of jobs that need to be driven by coordinators on the Natfly feedback thread. But since you asked, yes, you can do a job by remote. You can devise a brochure as a PDF file advertising Natfly and emailing it to all of the potential exhibitors that did NOT come this year. You can devise a brochure to send to all of the aeroclubs advertised in the magazine and encourage them to encourage their members to come. You can write articles for AOPA, WPA, SAAA, Antique aircraft Association in December, telling them what is on offer and inviting them and their members to Natfly 2012. Email me your details, and I will send you more information. Striving for a better Natfly for members. Cazza
  25. Hi Scotty and Burbles1, 1. The Board is adamant that Natfly be run without an entry fee. So if you want tht changed you have to convince the Board that a majority of members are willing to pay big bucks as an entry fee. Not everyone thinks like you. I had two people who insisted on camping in the underwing section in their cars (no airplane) because Underwing camping was only $5 a night and lOTS of people didn't pay even that. 2. THE BBQ at the Aeroclub on Friday night was not an AEROClub event nor did it raise money for the Aeroclub. The aeroclub refused to be involved in the BBQ, but allowed the Cessnock club and residents on the field to use their facilities. No the Aeroclub doesn't want to do that because its too much trouble and they make thousands out of selling grog which is easy. Cessnock club put it on as a fund raiser for the GYFTS program and the Holbrook Museum. No such offers came this year. It was my understanding the food court would operate on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights. The food court was the council's responsibility. I will pass on your comments, however, the council cannot force eateries to be open, so maybe you belong to a club that will do a BBQ next year? 3. Yes there was another event on in Temora, the Jet Boats. Again, Council was, as part of their tender, to contact community groups. I have to asssume they will do their job. 4. About Wayne, if people are happy to spend a day with him and miss out on other forums, that's fine, but this is in hindsight and doesn't fix the problem that people are here on Thursday and I try to provide for that as well and that it was a time slot specified by our technical manager. 5. The decision for the Museum to fly is held with the CEO of the Museum. The airspace has to be declared restricted and he has to be willing to do all the paperwork, etc. This decision is also tied to the entry fee. Perhaps RA-Aus could run a survey and find if people are willing to pay an for the weekend. 6. Burbles1, the problem of a lack of help starts today, by the time Natfly is in full swing, it is impossible to change the direction of history.e You did what could be done, but the rest of it, was too late for all of us. So we need people who are willing to take on the jobs now and organise them now and liaise with council RA-Aus, Board now. a. We put on a full program for young people three years ago, a tent, sessions for the 8-12 and guess what. Each session had only 1 dor 2 kids, because they want to stay with their parents. Council put on films in town just for natfly families and guess what., NO ONE attended. Tried to get the jumping castle, wouldn't come. So I am happy that there is so much interest in improving Natfly, and those who are serious about helping can put up their hands to coordinate sections of the event; This is what we need here on the ground now to start planning and taking responsibility for: Coordinator of Women's Program - Work with Amanda McCrone from the Council Coordinator of Children's Program - Work with Amanda McCrone from the Council Coordinator of Exhibitor Flypast on the PA announcements - Work with Sue Perokovic and Mick Poole Coordinator of Signage - Work with Fabio at the Council Food - Work with Andrew Robbins and Gary Lavelle at the Council Bus and Bus Schedules - Work with Andrew Robbins at the Council Program - Work with me, as no one else has access to people on the airfield with hangars. Get Board approval for this new structure and Get Board approval for instigating an Entry Fee. Thanks for your help, Carol
