  1. I just think if you're going to yell out a warning it should be something that is understood by everybody, aviator or not. In reality probably the most effective thing would be to have a reversing beeper on the front of an aircraft that activates with the mags (and deactivates on start...maybe with the alternator warning light).

Sounds like a good idea, P!

Nearly everyone knows to stand clear when they hear a beeper.

I'm not entirely sure of that... I regularly have to reverse my work's ten tonne truck through public events, schools, retirement villages, you name it. Regardless of how big, noisy, beepy it is, people still walk behind a reversing large truck - even with guides trying to keep the area clear! 086_gaah.gif.afc514336d60d84c9b8d73d18c3ca02d.gif

  2. Sure did! It was great. Although, we were doing about 120 kt .... if I was paying top dollar for a low level heli tour, I would want to see it a bit slower than 22o km/h! At 500 feet the scenery would wizz past before you could look at it! 029_crazy.gif.9816c6ae32645165a9f09f734746de5f.gif

  3. I've had the Galaxy S II for a little over a week now. Upgraded from a Samsung Omnia II - at the time it was the best implementation of WinMo 6.1, but at that stage I didn't know that Android was just around the corner - and so good! It has served me well, but is just so frustrating and limited sometimes!

The difference is like night and day:

    • Capacitive touch is wonderful!

    • The gps unit is much better.

    • The data radios seem to be much more reliable.

    • The dual-core processor has not missed a beat, despite hard-core 3d apps.

    • The Apps - Android Market!!!

    • The screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I've found a couple of aviation related apps.... What are the good ones I should be looking out for?

  4. Lining things up, as has been described is a good way to start, but what you are doing is relying on a no cross-wind situation while you are slowly embedding the "sight picture" in your mind. When you start doing cross-wind approaches, your approach line will not match the direction the aircraft is pointing, but it will be the line in which the aircraft is approaching the runway. It is the same with engine revs. You start out by setting specific revs for climb and descent, but after a while you get a feel for the aircraft and know the feel and sound.

It'll all come with hours under the belt.

You're right David! I should have also mentioned that it is only for normal approaches. Anything other than that requires a slightly different concept. However, while you are learning the conditions should be as normal as possible...

  5. Hey Glint,

While learning to control the aircraft, my instructor used to tell me to "Make the centre line run between your legs..."

Obviously, this would make the aircraft a bit to the right - but as was mentioned earlier, you will only be a foot or so out.

Keep at it! You're not alone! I'm sure many people (including me) have grappled with this issue at some stage!

  6. Hi all,I'm having a strange problem that involves my David Clark X11 headset and I'm hoping that someone here may be able to help.

Lately, using my headset, when I press the transmit button everybody on the frequency hears this high-pitched squealing noise. This is obviously untenable and my instructor has to do the radio work for me.

We've tried all the different switch settings, the same happens with or without the batteries. It was intermittent the week before but yesterday I could not get it to work at all.

I'm not sure if I can just send it in since I bought it second hand from someone and I don't have the original receipt. It is out of warranty - assuming its a standard 1 year.

    Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for reminding me, Owi! I have the same problem with my Altronics headset (purchased second hand - but in excellent condition) and the Microair M760.

It's fine for intercom stuff, but the minute I press the transmit button it screams! 034_puzzled.gif.ea6a44583f14fcd2dd8b8f63a724e3de.gif Tried every combination of volume settings, etc.

Haven't had a chance to try it in another aircraft yet.
