  1. Sorry I seem to have painted the wrong picture here. My instructor is great my post was more an attempt at a joke pointing out my need of instruction. All these commands are not only needed but well timed and not at all unwecomed. Marc
  2. Another lesson yesterday all I can remember was a fairly constant feed of commands in my ears . To high, Raise the nose, sinking more power. This one looks ok let's go all the way . And my personal favourite of the day. " wow let's make this one a missed approach." But as always a hell of a great time.
  3. I have had a problem going the other way with a blue tooth gps that would not connect to my ipad. It turned out to be an issue with the way that the gps talked via Bluetooth they called it a "difference in the command stack" long story short the gps unit I bought will never work on an ipad. Worked fine with ozi explorer running on a laptop. Now with a new ipad with internal gps no more problems and no big laptop for now simple mapping apps. The gps now sits in a draw so if you have no luck just flick me a message. And I can lend you this one to try out
  4. If you end up on the western side of town Cominya Flight Training at Cominya about 30 mins out of Ipswich just on the edge of the Amberly controll zone with nice views of the dams. And you are in the training area about 1 minute after take off Nice quiet grass strip with a taxi time barely long enough to get the engine up to opperating temp and I have never had to wait for other traffic. So your time flying is at a maximum in the air not on the ground. I should also mention that he trains in a lightwing not a Jab but the rates are quite fair I think. A happy student Marc
  5. Hi Scotty. I can't tell you what they earn but I looked at this when I was younger before I fell feet first into my current profession. I wanted to go avionics at the time. What I was told at the time is that you needed to do a 12 month course before your apprenticeship now I am not sure if this was so you where on a level playing field for one of the few positions available or a requirement of the trade . I think this was with aviation Australia at archerfield. I would still like to work in avionics but at this hate of life I can't afford to be an apprentice again maybe one day I will have a go at it. Marc
  6. Come on now Nev I work in telecommunications and we are the kings of acronyms but that paragraph was ridiculous. No I haven't read it it took me a month to sound out all the words for my BAK so extra reading I will leave alone for a while. Once I have all my theory subjects passed I might read up on more advanced theory I am kicking around the idea of doing my PPL subjects once I am done. I just need to see what the requirements are to be able to sit the exams. So far I have enjoyed working on my theory it's nice studying for a subject I enjoy. Marc
  7. Passed my first theory exam today I have done things backwards apparently. Usually you start with radio and pre solo air law so they will be next. Win a grand total of 4 hours in the log book. Onwards and upwards
  8. It's just like the old bmx put the wheel between your knees and twist the handle bars. Easy
  9. Can anyone tell me if there is any technical difference such as impedance between a helicopter and ga headset I know you can buy an adaptor that splits the single plug to the twin GA plugs but I am not sure if this will introduce any other problems. I have been offered a headset but I don't want to spend the bucks if it won't work. Thanks Marc
  10. Do you think it matters what you do spin training in the sense of Powered Vs Gliders ? Yep that's the Place Bandit.
  11. For those that are interested I dropped into talk to an instructor in Toowoomba about doing some upset attitude and spin training. He dose it in a ct 4 and the cost is around 400 an hour in this aircraft and recommends 3 to 4 hours should give you the idea of what's fun what scares you and what will kill you. can anyone recomend any where else in the SEQ area that can offer this sort of training ? Marc
  12. You could use my wife she one that reads her accounting text books and complains about grammar and spelling mistakes.
  13. Another question I should throw out there is what life span do you expect for a headset
  14. One of the toys that comes along with flying is getting your own headset. When I pitched my flying plan to the trouble and strife the deal isI have to spell out the costs and forecast the expenditure over time one of the joys of having a wife that works in accounting. I made the decision not to buy my own headset until If and when I solo. But I will need make a decision early so the boss can approve the cost. Being a bit of a nerd who like his toys with a massive 1 hour loged towards my certificate I have been looking into what's on the market there is a huge Range and variation in price. I have more questions to ask. Are all headsets and intercoms and radios compatible? I don't want to buy something that won't work. Passive or Active noise cancelling ? Is paying top dollar for high end ANC worth it? I got to use a pair of Bose ANC. When I was doing some work with the traffic chopper in Brisbane and they where great but are they worth the $$$$? Do entry level ANC headsets work we'll ? I know that cheaper active noise cancelling headphones don't really seem to cut the mustard What do you all think is the best value headset around based on performance comfort and features Thanks Marc
  15. I think the problem with these areas is that the boom is short lived 5-10 years during the infrastructure build. Once that's is completed all the guys building the projects move on and the town almost returns to pre boom levels. For sure there is more cash in the towns for a while but after that what happens. Is that time frame enough to get the towns big enough to reach a critical mass to promote there own growth ? I suppose that life in the Wild West.
  16. Ahh see I am smarter than you I just intend to stay poor.
  17. I work around the chinchilla area and I think one of the most amazing things I have seen is the Tara airport big long illuminated and nothing on it as far as I am aware probably only used for loading the crop dusters. I can't recall seeing any hangers at Tara. It's run by the western downs council. From what I have seen in the area the houses are ridiculously expensive but the larger blocks out of town can be much cheaper. Chinchilla seems to be quite active with the flying school and one of the charter companies is In and out all day for the CSG industry. And I think it's one hanger and another structure with a couple of crop dusters under it. I have only been to tara airport once during the last floods out here to drop a guy of to a charter. I haven't been out there for a while but I think stanthorpe is the same great big strip lights and all and hardly used.
  18. Thanks for the continued interest. Good arguments from both sides now I have a point of my own to make. 1. Yeah it's clear I have no idea how to spell dragger sorry about that. It could be spelling at all that is the issue, I think I was dropped as a baby. But seriously as I have said it comes down to getting the job done with the best chance of completion. So I will keep my skirts shave my chest and what I don't spend on razors I will fly as much as I can. And even if I don't finish again I still love every second even being around aircraft of any type. What did all of you start out in?
  19. If you want to get on a jet buy a ticket all this talk of hitchhiking is crazy!.
  20. Roger on that one I hope to get a couple more hours towards that number by the end of the month lets all keep our fingers crossed for good weather on the 19th thats the day I have booked to get back in the air got a couple of hours.
  21. I have always bee more interested in sleek looking low wing aircraft. I am male and so I do love the sexy things in life but what turned me towards the draggers is the videos of the carbon cub. What they do in that thing is amazing. It looks like you could step out of the thing 3 feet of the ground before it hit the ground if the worst happens.
  22. The school has both last time I checked and as mentioned I have the choice of learning in either. From the points listed above I think I might start in the nose wheal for the certificate. Just to get it done, once I have that I will see what to play with next. As with most of us stuck on the ground it's a time /weather/ money Swiss Cheese equation ( Trying to get all the holes lined up) I have the permission of the trouble and strife to spend the money. I have time currently working FIFO and I might even take up prayer to try work on the weather when I am home. But any of these 3 can disappear at any time so I think it's in my best interest to get my certificate done ASAP. I do love the idea of the dragger and I really am struggling with the choice but I think if I want to fly I have to let the idea go for the time being. The school only has the one dragger and if I or anyone else breaks it it will put a massive hole in my training. If my lovely wife ever gets to the point of insanity of letting be buy an aircraft it would probably be a tail dragger but for now I will stick with what makes the most sense. Thanks all for the posts Marc
  23. What are the main real world benefits of a tail dragger do you think? Apart from style and class!
