1. Yeah, whatever the case is/was for the Il-76, the in-hub hose thingo recalls to me the ability of the "DUKW" ("army duck") to ajust its tyre pressures on the go ... while it was actually travelling, do you mind! http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/Mil/DUKW/DUKW.html
2. They're flat (so?). But what's the hose emerging from the hub centre - air or what? And check out "the best car repair shop in Dubai/Sharjah" it's a pearler... http://www.360cities.net/image/dubai-sharjah-car-repair-shop#30.52,-2.25,50.0
3. Never heard of the a/c : always always something to learn isn't there! - the engine comment brought to mind this from Herschel Smith's excellent "Aircraft Piston Engines"... "...Curtiss-Wright had gone to about the limit for a nine with the G series R-1820 Cyclone.....though at some cost to the smoothness. DC3 buyers had the choice of Cyclone or Twin Wasp power, and it was said that pilots from American Airlines, which used the R-1820, could be identified by their tremor, which took several hours to go away after a long flight with a pair of Cyclones. A gross libel, undoubtedly."
4. Wasps, going by the decals visible in image#3...
5. Have done a bit more homework, and I see that the Oakey museum website states that MH-Y (the ex Zuccoli a/c) is now a static exhibit. MH-R at Temora is airworthy, and when I last (June '11) sighted LB-L, Jim Whalley's aircraft at Parafield, it had the engine out.
6. Yep... as for reply #7. I'm still hoping to find out just how many Boomerangs ("original" or not...) are in Australia and are airworthy... I'd be surprised if it tallies more than a couple
7. Are we (or me) getting confused with something else here...? This... http://www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com/ looks as though Wanaka 2012 is still scheduled.
8. Are we talking about Boomerangs here? I see a Canberra as well as "something else" Please ID for me. Mick - do you mean that there ar esix airworthy Boomerangs at Grenoch? If so, it's news to me... clarification, please.
9. A friend of ours here in Adelaide worked for Bristol during WW II and was involved in the engine prep work on the Halifax prior to the flight out to Australia. The Wikner Special ran at Lobethal Grand Carnival in 2008. Very brief clip here... It runs a Rajo overhead valve conversion and sounds VERY good.
10. Can't imagine Life without Warbirds Over Wanaka - the alternate years Omaka show seems to go from strength to strength...
11. I shall speak to SWMBO and see if the (jointly signed for) purse strings might be loosened to allow for Wanaka 2012. I take it then, that the period immediately following Wanaka involves the dreaded school holidays and the children theretowithin involved...?
12. What ever happened to the "long final"! I'd call it an on-the-edge-of-your-seat final... that's ****** awesome! Yeah, I agree with the New Guinea suggestion - (where are you, Sixties?)
13. 'donya Chainy - fantastic to have you back with us. We're off in a week for 6 weeks in Northern Climes so will likely be mostly out of contact. Back end of October, so will be hoping to hear of good recovery in the interim. Cheers cobber - Geoff.
14. Off the top of my head there were no surviving intact Boomerangs. The story of Jim Whalley's a/c is absolutely amazing if you get to see the work that had to be put into it. I commend the Classic Wings articles to you to get an idea of the work. Restoring veteran cars from piles of scrap and bits and pieces scrounged from all over the place is one thing, but when you're looking at an object that has to be air worthy, it's a whole new ball game! The least unkind descriptive for any airworthy Boomerang toaday might be "composite" rather than "reproduction".
15. The CA-12 Parafield Boomerang is flown by Jim Whalley - its squadron markings shown as LB-L, ID'd as A46-63, serial # given as 886. How much of this can be taken as "gospel" I can't verify - when it comes to an airworthy example I feel that a lot of repro items must perforce be incorporated into aircraft of this age. Doesn't worry me too much as I'd rather see them flying rather than static only. If you can chase up the following "Classic Wings" issues you'll find much more material dealing with Boomerangs which might help your "old chap" in his seeking out survivors. Vol 10 #4 '03 Issue 42 Vol 16 #3 '09 Issue 71 Vol 17 #2 '10 Issue 75 Cheers, Geoff.
16. Very much non flying and very very home made. Having said that, it's not a bad effort - just that the closer one approaches it, the more it becomes clear that it is in no way the real deal. No idea where it is now, but might make a couple of enquiries to see if I can find out. We have a Boomerang at Parafield,'though a month or so ago when we visited the Classic Jet Fighter museum it had the engine out for repair$$$$$.
17. Good on you, Chainy ... here's hoping that you'll be on the improve and feeling much better before too much longer. Best regards from Geoff.
18. That photograph was taken at Burra, north of Adelaide (look it up...). While it might look like the real thing from a distance, it was very much a "home made" thing fabricated from all sorts of el cheapo stuff. Someone had a lot of spare time on their hands, as well as a great deal of enthusiasm.
19. Thanks Glenn - we're all wishing him the best ... please pass on those thoughts for us when you speak. Geoff C.
20. I'll go with the C46 (or Navy equivalent) - the twin cargo doors are surely a clue along with the fat fuselage?
21. And to lift this topic above the cloud of NewsBot generated volcanic ash, here's a link which will give you an idea of what the Dateline program was all about. http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/peopleandpower/2010/12/20101214104637901849.html
22. OK - I'll kick it off ... Having watched last night's SBS Dateline program I am quite concerned by what I saw. The whistleblowers involved were, I believe, truly genuine to the point that they sacrificed their jobs by going public (in fact, they were dudded by someone from the US Admin, I think..). Anyone else out there watch the program? Watch this space...?
23. Here's to a positive outcome Chainy ... tailwinds all the way for you :luck:
24. Pulled this off the web a few years ago: Benin, Nigeria. Looks like they could do with some mould resistant bathroom paint?
