1. If you're impressed by this shot (I was!), then you may well be interested in the rest of the story here...http://www.conniesurvivors.com/1-christler_flying_service.htm
2. Just had a thought - "Flypast" by Parnell/Boughton might be worth wading through - and I really mean that... it's far from easy extracting specific info from it. Or maybe you've already been down that path.
3. Hi all, I contacted a friend who has made the following suggestion(s). Hopefully of some help to you. Regards, Geoff. "I have read several books written by famous women pilots from Australia - - There is one about Jean Batten, another about Amy Johnson, another about Berryl Markham (West with the Night) - I hope I'm spelling these names right. Would they be listed somewhere in Google? Great reads, as I recall. Even though some of the books were historical novels, they included lots of facts about their flights."
4. Thanks Darren - do please let us know if & when you find out... :)
5. I was hoping Darren had maybe flown over that area again and managed to find his way to the pointy end of the aircraft at the appropriate time...
6. Are we any closer to nailing this one...?
7. We're into veteran cars (pre 1919): the last bastion (for the moment, anyway...) of no seat belt and no crash hat. How much longer that'll last before the Safety Police bring in yet another b****y OH & S law, God only knows... do it while it lasts, I say!
8. "...bits of pipe and rag covered sticks, looking through struts and wires." Sixties, you are a true Romantic - and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. What a beautiful account: thanks for posting it... And how interesting that it was the you-beaut modern camera gear which gave the problems - not the old technology rag, string and tube aircraft!
9. Ahh... I think my brain must have been disengaged when I asked that - 'cause my grey matter didn't put together a LAME, which presumably you will become, and AME. All the best !!
10. Hardly planet-friendly, but certainly spectacular... Sixties - you & I could well have a super-sentimental session over a beer or three, I suspect:tongue: Cop this ...
11. Welcome to the forum, Aerotech, and to prove that you're in with at least one member who doesn't have that "I know more than you" attitude - what's an AME please? This question is coming to you from a B.O.F. who, nonetheless, has a real interest in almost all things aero and aviation...
12. Ah - nostalgia; but it ain't what it used to be, as the saying goes.:frown: Can I be cheeky enough to perhaps translate "a band of brothers" as "old farts"? Well, in 1956 this particular old fart was at Mallala as a 15 year old for this, and now there's just the sad remains of one of 'em stuck in a couple of corners of Moorabbin: very sad.:frown::frown::frown:
13. Sorry, but this is more like MY idea of what a Harvard should look like ... but then how could anyone expect a brainless bot be able to pick the difference?
14. Bon voyage and happy landings Kaye...
15. Crikey, Coop ... what a rocket! Great account, as ever - but it's a wonder your head didn't split in two, what with that mile-wide grin. So there's an engine upgrade coming to the Auster to match the performance? Maybe a Merlin or Allison, ex war surplus? BTW - what's the level fight max speed then?
16. The ankle/heel/shoe/base region must have involved some serious design thought....
17. Yep... that's what it looked like to me too. What's the euphemistic term for it ... "uncontained failure" or some such?
18. John, firstly ... I'd be interested in your "reliable person" giving us the source of these images. These do not immediately suggest to me what I have elsewhere seen posted of ash-induced damage to turbines. and .. also, please: Give me some examples of piston engined aircraft which DO run air filters on their carburettor/intake system. (please note that I am not suggesting that no piston engined a/c run filters - rather, as I believe, only a very small minority.)
19. YUK! Ugly! Any details of where/when/what John? I heard a radio media person (an Aussie, unfortunately) this morning deal out an information gem that "piston engined planes are unaffected by the ash since they have air filters...). Yeah, sure...
20. Beautifully written, Jack - and heartiest congratulations. I wish you a wonderful, enjoyable and above all, safe, flying future.
21. Excellent stuff, Coop - thanks for burning the midnight oil to get these images up (& thanks too, Glenn!) - can't wait to see the rest of the trip. I spent around 20 years up in that N.E. corner of S.A. and S.W. Qld, and I almost (only almost!) wish I were still up there at the employer's expense to see it all. Well done!
22. Welcome aboard Pete - if you're on the south side of town you can't go too far wrong with a visit to Aldinga any good flying weather weekend, and even if the weather's RS, they have a fab. café !
23. Yes - it's a bit difficult to read. Here's another attempt: see if it's any easier to puzzle out
24. Querty might know... you could try giving him a PM.
