1. FIFTY! Jeez, I WISH! Just back from what The Navigator refers to as a "somewhat mechanical" 3 weeks or so, taking in the Victorian 1 & 2 cylinder rally, a visit to the Temora Museum, and then to the Antique Aeroplane Association's Fly-in at Cowra. Hey, did any TNFr's go? Anyone want some piccies of it? Then via Parkes (yes...the dish, natch) to Broken Hill where we spent two nights in the company of the bunch of loonies driving/riding 1 or 2 cylinder pre 1919 cars & bikes 'twixt Perth & Sydney. They'll be at Cobar tonight, methinks. Check my buddy's trip blog here http://netguys.com.au/blog/?page_id=17 So all the best, Kaye ... many, many more happy years to you, and sorry we had another obligation on the day/night/morning...
2. One of my favourites.
3. Simply beautiful ... and awesome - all in the one. Fantastic post. (but I bet Sixties has some difficulty with the side stick fly-by-wire bit) Are left hookers preferred as Airbus Captains? I reckon it'd feel a bit weird, me being RHS - like all of us less sinister folk;)
4. In a way(sort of) the Yanks did go back to the drawing board, but a lot later...
5. Ahem...
6. A good(?) idea but guess what ... no joy. http://www.enotes.com/topic/Piaggio_P.7 Here's another weirdo ... French (again).
7. Yes, that Monash site's a good one. The Phillips "things" I think of as "venetian blind" aircraft (well, sort of aircraft, anyway...). I think I prefer the Wright brothers' scientific approach over that of Mr Phillips, however ... :)
8. In that case, all the more reason to chase up Not much of an Engineer by Stanley Hooker. You'll love it!:p
9. Guilty as pronounced (or suggested/inferred...?) ... I'm just an ordinary "bloke" who has a special interest in things at each end of the spectrum dealing with (planes, trains, boats, cars etc...) - that spectrum dealing with complexity, crudity, size etc etc ... whatever. And yes, the Stipa-Caproni/Caproni-Stipa falls well within those bounds. :)
10. Maybe there's something "different" about Italian aircraft designers...?
11. Stronger ones I think, Pete...
12. Snap!
13. Cor! My comment was only a cheap throw-away line Willie ... I'm in awe of your research on the engines. The Lincolns, BTW, were I think a popular item for testing new engines as I seem to recall the Napier Nomad being stuck in the same (nose) position of one for flight testing. Cheers, Geoff.
14. My anti malware installation indicated lots of unwelcome activity from this site - so often seems to be the case from Russian sites. Interesting to see the team of females working on the wing/tailplane (whatever) - put me in mind of the images one sees of females doing the linen covering on WWI aircraft.
15. And who knows ... they might well be a copy &/or derivative of a copy of same!:p
16. Oops - thanks Pete ... I must get my optical prescription renewed, or more clearly get a grip on what "animation" means!
17. Wikipedia ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_F-15_Eagle#Structural_defects What intrigues me just as much is the film capture of this incident in so much detail. Maybe they're stills from a video? Dunno.
18. I'm inclined to think the US military industrial complex ain't overfussed by that prospect, just so long as they get the contracts.
19. Great shots, and good text to go with it - wow, don't you sometimes wish you lived a bit closer to all that sort of action...?
20. Jeez! What a blast! ... and beware of flying fish ingestion whilst skimming the waves!
21. Ah.... the Shorpy site: there's some really good stuff there. http://www.shorpy.com Quite possibly those Kodachromes were taken with one of these, but we should remember that this wasn't the largest size - 8x10 and even larger for real quality! A bit different nowadays!
22. Couldn't get Spin's link to work for some reason, but found the clip elsewhere. Then went looking under "ground resonance" in Youtube. Lots of entertainment to be found therein (as long as you're not on board!)
23. Oh bother ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Typhoon :p
24. Well well (no pun intended...), looky here! :)
25. Yeah ... it's got me stumped too: have to do a bit of trawling (no pun) I reckon. If not a sub, at least a super-low freeboard/silhouette job. Torps at the front fitting into the hull scallops, maybe.
