1. This is a little better controlled...?
2. Here's the man ... and yes - gassed he was, apparently.
3. It's a cold, wet afternoon; so a bit of fireside surfing has been the go - coming upon this... and if this image takes your fancy, check out the others via the link. Amazing!
4. We spent 3 years on Nauru (no, not as illegal immigrants!) and during that time Air Nauru operated a 737 equipped as is this one here, for non-sealed strips. Protruding forward of the engine intakes is bleed air to prevent stone ingestion, and fitted to the nose wheel a shield to prevent stones being thrown up. It's a long time ago, but I think the only unsealed strip they used was Bonriki (Tarawa, ...TRW), in what was then called the Gilbert Islands & now Kiribati (pronounced "Kiribuss", the "-it" being sibillant). 5. Nobby Buckley & Max Fatchen: now there we have a couple of legends...
6. Hang in there Sixties ... we're on your side!
7. Sixties ... try to make yourself known to Andy Bishop at Temora (ask at the desk when you arrive) - tell him Geoff Chennells says "g'day" and let him know a bit about your background in PNG, etc. A great guy, and not only into aviation, but veteran cars as well. His dad is a retired 747 Captain, also into veteran cars. Here's Andy with the co-driver/navigator... Wish I could be there too, but the timing's off, unfortunately. Have a great - and safe - trip.
8. A little more on Affleck here ... http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/affleck-arthur-herbert-9314
9. This must have been taken on a "quiet" day...
10. Five weeks. Given all the things mentioned in Sixtie's last post, that's a very very long time to have survived.
11. "The loss" ... not "missing" ... it looks to me as though in their minds it's been written off .
12. An amazing story: immediately makes me think of the Stinson & Bernard O'Reilly, not to mention the crash of the F27 in the Andes & the subsequent ordeal. Then there's Bill Lancaster too ( http://www.historynet.com/bill-lancaster-lost-in-the-sahara-after-attempting-to-break-the-england-cape-town-flight-speed-record.htm ) There are so many such stories ...
13. Anyone out there familiar with the loss of Sir John Franklin & the ongoing searches for him through the insistence & support of Lady Franklin? She was one who wasn't prepared to give up ... but sadly, she was eventually to be sorely disappointed. The Arctic, too, is a pretty harsh environment... The ADY folk have had to have survived a forced landing in poor light in god knows what sort of terrain, and are now into their fifth week of survival. The odds are starting to become pretty damn long.
14. Thanks Dave - much appreciated.
15. What a wonderful story ... and here we are, still hanging on the edge of our seats - wondering whether the occupants from ADY are still alive!
16. Same goes for me too - thanks for wising us up! Here are a couple of shots of a Jumbo which was flown into a somewhat j..u..s..t wide enough strip; I think it was possibly for museum display - someone else might know for sure the full story. I can understand the pilots looking so pleased with their effort!
17. Beautiful! But I can feel the grit doing its evil work on the bores  More of it here: lovely, lovely sound!!
18. How reassuring... "some flat country" ... in amongst the hills, gorges & gullies
19. VQS overfly ... beautiful! Now back to work, Darren...:p My AGV is the free version ... I'm too tight-a***d to pay for anything more than a self-funded retiree absolutely has to! And here's a cracker... yeah, I realise it's not a contrail, but so?
20. The Avian might be a possibility, but let's not digress any further from the story of ADY.
21. Golbourn/Golburn Island mentioned in Sixties last post:- one of my early mudlog jobs was in the Arafura Sea on a jackup rig. We flew from Darwin in a light twin to G.I. then chopper out to the rig. Spectacular country in its own (non-New Guinea) way, but still not forced-landing friendly by any means.
22. AVG's telling me it's (among other things) a phishing site. You'll like the next one, no doubt...over the Gobi Desert (Dessert...;))
23. I got a warning on that site from my AVG protection: take care. Here's one of my favourites taken off the web some time ago...
24. Here's a Genet Major, and I don't think I'm over-exaggerating in saying that it is basically a Genet with two more pots. The Genet looks a likely contender, I'd say... Tomorrow will make it a month since ADY "disappeared": Four b****y weeks!
25. Any idea what the engine is Sixties? A Genet? - maybe from the Junkers Junior? Refuel by the 4 gallon tin - that'd be a job for the "boys" I guess? And I think the workshop facility is - er - excellent! Plenty of through-flow ventilation, I see.
