  1. Update on this topic; I was recently told about an RA-Aus school operating out of Archerfield, by an otherwise reliable source. I couldn't let that go without checking for myself and detoured to Archer after work, earlier this week. Anyhow lo and behold I found a brand new RA registered Jab 170 sitting on the apron and a new flight school in the main terminal building (http://pathfinderaviation.com.au/) One thing lead to another, as it does with me and aeroplanes, and I ended up renewing my acquaintance with the Jab, taking a flight out over the bay:biggrin:. I understand that solo flight from this airfield will require a class 2 medical but I am intending to regain my long dormant PPL, so it is no additional hassle for me - and a big plus being able to fly from close to work.
  2. Anyone consider that "de identified" referred to the forum members, rather than the forum? Certainly how I read it, eg D.I. for our very own David Isaac. Never mind let's not let something obvious get in the way of a good bitch session, that isn't the way recreationalflying way at all
  3. Like everything else with RA-Aus, via exemption from CASA. Give them a ring or drop in shags, nice bunch of people - and they have a relationship with the Flight One crowd who you asked about in another thread. Office is in the terminal building, off the lounge area on the right. Jab had a grand total of 28.1 hours on the Hobbs this afternoon:thumb_up:. I had a great afternoon, managed not to get too tongue tied over the unfamiliar radio calls and quickly came to terms with the Jab. Out to the bay to do some stalls and turns of various sorts then back up the Logan River at low level - great fun and a good learning experience trying to keep the ball within bounds whilst switching from turn left straight into turn right and back again.... I was impressed and will be going back, everything else aside it is a huge help being able to get there before or after work.
  4. If the name of our magazine is the biggest thing we had to worry about, then we are in pretty good shape. Storm in a teacup i.m.o you're never going to please all of the people.
  5. Hi Dave - thanks for the heads up yesterday. I took a drive down there and lo and behold a "numbers" registered Jab parked on the apron at Archerfield. I had a chat to a very pleasant bloke behind the counter and was taken to crawl all over the Jab. My primary focus is on cross-qualifying to regain my long dormant PPL, they are only RA at the moment but are associated with a GA school there and are able to get me up to speed on controlled airspace operations before I start shelling out the big bucks for a GA aircraft. I've booked an hour for this afternoon, looking forward to remaking my acquaintance with a Jab, last one I flew was nearly 20 years ago, I suspect they have moved on a little since then:cheezy grin:. I'll report back later. As you say this is going to be a big plus for RA in and around Brisbane, this way i can sneak in an hour after work, minor detour on the way home. http://pathfinderaviation.com.au/
  6. Another however many posts since I posed the question and all we have is ever more obscure references - man up fellas, if the individual concerned is so dangerous to our future wellbeing then I think we need to know about it. I don't see the need to cloak it all in secrecy; ahlocks and apparently several others have issues with the man, rightfully or wrongly (?) I don't know any of you other than as names on the forum so am not in a position to judge. All I know of him is that he is one of the few on the elderly plum to ever mention RA other than in disparaging terms - maybe I missed something and as I said at the outset I'm willing to be corrected. Whispering behind hands isn't going to do it though.
  7. Now if that isn't about the most patronising post I've seen on here. "Muddying the water" presupposes that I have an agenda in the discussion, I don't other than to question quite what earned the individual concerned the dubious honour of being the target of ahlocks invective. Poor form, quite frankly.
  8. Yeah they did Donald, I suspect they aren't doing it all in one go, but rather in a few stages with breaks in between. What an experience though - one day!!!
  9. Are we reading the same website?? Other than an obvious dislike for a board member well known in these parts, I can't recall any particular anti RA statements from the individual concerned. Happy to be corrected, merely my impression from what I've read. Quite what the history of that dispute is I don't know - or need to, but it certainly shouldn't disqualify him from serving on the RA board.
  10. Thanks ave8rr, I was confident someone would know a bit more - not good, but selfishly I was relieved to hear that it wasn't another RA crash.
  11. http://www.gattonstar.com.au/story/2011/07/20/spitfires-amazing-aussie-leukaemia-foundation/ Came across this one whilst trying to find out more about the Dirranbandi accident - fantastic see people making use of their aircraft in this way. I am right in understanding that this is an entirely separate project from the Wings of Life flight, aren't I?
  12. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8274825 Only news clip I could find, anyone know anymore - RA / GA? Sad news. RIP fellow aviator
  13. That well known, infectious disease that compells many pilots to do something daft whenever they have an audience. As I understand it, the IL-76, like many heavies, has auto braking on the wheels during the retraction sequence - saves you putting a wheel spinning at serious rpm into a cramped wheelbay. Here, retracting whilst the rearmost tyres were still on the ground caused them to drag and one to burst. Imagine something with less brute power settling back onto the runway thanks to the speed bleeding off:yikes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ66S75Xzpw
  14. Nah docjell, I don't follow all the indignation at all - I know RA bashing is fashionable in some quarters, but so far in our association I have been happy with how they have conducted themselves. If, as you now say, your issue is with CASA rego's being transparent and ours not, well take that up with them, don't blame RA-Aus for acting in accordance with the majority vote. Incidently, I enquired of an atc contact and was met with the proverbial "huh, what problem" when I asked if there was any problem in getting RA registration details if necessary......
  15. Debate seems to be raging as to whether the crew filled their respective underwear - all I can say is, having (in a former life) helped to organise and run previous airshows at that venue, I'm very pleased it didn't happen on my watch!
  16. Thanks for the heads up Alan, have just gone to rescue mine from the shredding pile. As for the mag - I like it, they have addressed some of the minor presentation issues from issue one and it now looks like something I'd pick up at the newsagents. Had to laugh at the rebuttal of the "ads, ads, ads" comment under feedback, turns out there were less ads than in previous editions:oh yeah:. Having had quite a bit to do with writing for and producing a glossy about half the thickness of our mag, I think the editorial team have done a good job under the circumstances - at any rate the trend is in the right direction.
  17. Frankly in this day and age I am amazed that VH aircraft registrations are as transparent as they are. As other's have said, those that really need to know who owns an RA aircraft would have no difficulty in obtaining the info. In contrast, anyone tried to obtain ownership details on a motor vehicle? I spotted an old Chrysler Imperial that I wanted to photograph and measure for some bodywork and hit a brick wall in getting the info - aircraft, just look it up on the Casa site, link on the home page of this site.
  18. That's impressive ozzie - good to see the thing actually fly, no computer simulations, no pictures, just an ultralight flying with a little motor that you could tuck under your arm. I'm not convinced that batteries are the final answer, but the technology is rapidly getting there, exciting times.
  19. Tomo, that's gold! Having seen bills for a cast of thousands on Energex work sites, I'm inclined to think it must be some of them in the photo.
  20. I hate to lower the exalted moral tone of this place, but do you think we might talk flying for a bit? Good to hear of someone putting their aircraft to good use, Maj, let's face it most of us don't have to drive out to the airfield and then go bore holes in the sky - just for our pleasure. That must be an interesting flight and at least being essentially coastwise the wx should be fairly predictable, not like having to cross the range?

  22. Interesting view on things from an apparent industry insider - copied across from the superannuated plum.... "Blades from the High Pressure Compressor stage 6 keep failing at the root. Once they let go, massive damage is caused as the part flies through the rest of the compressor and then the turbine hence all the sparks and heat. Qantas keep refering to this as an overheated engine that is shut down as a "precautionary measure". Of course they also say it is not a safety issue. This aircraft, OJL had a similar failure on Eng 4 in BKK a month ago. The good news is that there is a known fix to this problem by way of modification. The bad news (for Qantas) is that they can't carry out the modification becasue they closed their Roller engine shop last year. The Asian shops they use now are all booked out so the mod is not being done until an engine comes off for routine service. I'd be expecting a few more of these failures. I think this is about the 10th one."

  24. They don't miss a trick, apparently last night's flight out of Johannesburg had to turn back after #3 engine failure on a 747. Of course the Twits or tweeting classes immediately had the word out that an A380 engine "exploded on take off" and everyone "survived an emergency landing" - situation all the more dramatic for the fact that the Springbok rugby team were aboard:yikes:. Probably did not help that the ABC doco on the A380 incident was broadcast there within the last month.......
  25. Welcome aboard Paul, hope you enjoy the company and find it interesting. Sounds as though we are fortunate that here our Recreational Certificate is administered by an independent body and CASA, our FAA equivalent, maintain an oversight only. Enjoy the Hawk
