  1. Not a good photo unfortunately, but if I remember correctly Peter quickly moved out of shot once Dazza and I produced cameras and pointed them in the direction of his aircraft. Taken at the Jacobs Well Fly in October 2010.
  2. Long term student, meter reader, bookmaker's clerk, soldier, sailor, lawyer, writer; more or less in that order and with a few overlaps
  3. Ok, hands up anyone who has pulled, pushed or otherwise caused an aircraft to gently nudge something else? Unfortunately I don't think this one will just buff out. This happened shortly before the recent Paris Air Show and involved the Airbus A380 factory demonstrator aircraft.
  4. Yup, got it inked in - a bit more accessible than Avalon for us SEQers.
  5. John, I'm not familiar with the FAA versions except that I understand that their Sport Pilot is similar in intent to our RA certificate. How did the Recreational Certificate differ from that? Personally the Casa version as sketched out above, is something that would interest me. As I've said elsewhere, I like RA type flying, have virtually no need for controlled airspace but would like at least one more passenger due to my family circumstances. As things stand, I'm in the throes of deciding where to spend the money to regain my PPL.
  6. GwF&B, I think that feature would be a fitting memorial for both pilots, even if not explicit. I know Peter was passionate about aviation and particularly water borne aircraft, and I understand the other gent was very much involved too.
  7. Sandman, I don't know about that particular battery, however last time I needed one for an aircraft I found an exact match at a motorcycle dealer. Might be worth trying one or two of them?
  8. http://en.video.canoe.tv/video/raw-video%3A-emergency-landing-on-highway/919707470001 Apologies if this one has been posted before; a highway may not be the best choice for an emergency landing in many circumstances, but I think this could accurately be described as a " good job".
  9. Photo taken in happier times - you'll see that exhaust soot on the prop blades is a feature.

Sadly, what I would have considered the obvious choice, the Super Petrel suffered an unexplained hull loss today. I've had a look at a few examples of the aircraft and have been very impressed at what I could see of the workmanship. Pricing too is attractive at around $115,000 for a basic VFR fitout. Obviously I'd be looking closely at the reasons for the crash and I suppose there could be issues with local support from hereon forward - damn a real shame! The Seamax certainly looks the goods, but from the prices I've seen quoted, they are in a different market segment really. The Searey is well proven, but a little agricultural in comparison to the other two, not a criticism, merely an observation. I haven't checked out the numbers but per my uncalibrated mark one eyeball it cruises rather slower too. Keep us posted, I am heading in a different direction for the present but something along these lines is very much on the radar for a little later on.
  11. Ah no, my thoughts are with the families.
  12. Bit of a shot in the dark here, I understand that this privately run museum near Beaudesert (SW of Brisbane) has flying days from time to time - I found their website but couldn't find any details about a display schedule. Does anyone know anymore - it's not a million miles away and could be a worthwhile outing? http://www.wirrawayaviationmuseum.com/

I've been following the discussion on the old plum and elsewhere, seems like a really good effort - and a homebrewed one at that. Looks like I've found a use for an ipad after all:smile:
  14. Only thing listed for this weekend is the Tiger get together at Watts Bridge, but that's Saturday unfortunately. There is a bit of a gap in the program isn't there, a bit earlier in the year there was at least one event most weekends.
  15. Nice one David, congrats. See you out there sometime.
  16. Geez where's that Op Shop, Hongie - although on second thoughts better not, I already have serious capacity constraints thanks to years, make that decades of support for Pilot, Flyer, Flying and a few others that have come and gone. I agree with Methuselah and others, even the classics like Pilot are a disappointment these days - I was very pleased to find one on the shelf at my local recently but won't be rushing out to subscribe again. Can anyone recall the name of a prolific writer of theirs who put a Nord or similar onto its back and was then found to be sans licence thanks to diabetes? He wrote some brilliant test reports as did Bob Grimshaw.
  17. Cheers thanks for that - incidentally I am familiar with the equipment, including the powered variety, having been involved in some very early test flying. I also have more than a passing familiarity with the reliability or otherwise of witnesses, thanks to my day job.
  18. Not really important in the greater scheme of things is it? Although I do wonder why fishermen who were on beach at the time and the paramedics both mentioned the landing as being in the shallow water. Anyhow which forum extralite, HGFA? I'm more interested in what went wrong, equipment failure, pilot error, just plain bad luck?
  19. I see on the news that a powered paraglider decked it off south Straddie this afternoon - according to witnesses he came in from about 100', appeared as if it was spiralling around a partially collapsed wing. Landed in the surf zone, breaking a limb or two, fortunately some of the bystanders ran into the surf and kept his head above water. Wonder what happened, conditions appeared calm - in fact one of the nicest days we have had this year.
  20. This is likely to create some debate , Jabiru USA have just got their prototype RV12, powered by an 85hp Jab, airborne for the first time. I don't pretend to know much about them, being more familiar with Lycosaurus and Rotax engines but it never fails to amaze me how different the perception of the Jab engines is in the US and SA (2 big markets) vs many people in Aus. One thing I do know though, I far prefer the "face" of the Jab powered RV12:wink: Images courtesy of Jabiru USA (via http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=66354&page=15)
  21. I'll second that, very nice looking piece of kit. Clever paint job too, disguises the proportions of the fuselage.
  22. Welcome aboard wesky, to the forum and to RA in general. Discuss with your CFI but there is recognition for prior training and having trained for more than the min 20 hours, you could in theory do the conversion and be signed out with a certificate. Edit, I see you're short solo hours, but yes your previous hours do apply. I also had a big gap, 14 years in my case and after a refresher on the whole syllabus and focussing on RA operations, was signed out in around 10 hours.
  23. Picked mine up this afternoon and have just finished reading it. Geez girls, we have turned into a bunch of whingers or is it just that it has become fashionable to bash anything RA-Aus do? Aside from a few examples of clumsy cropping in the member's market, I couldn't see anything that was noticeably different from the way it used to be done, except for the masthead and here I'll agree with Nick and others; a non-member is far more likely to pick this up off the shelf and really that is all that matters.
  24. Damn, that's a shame, glad they are ok.
