  1. Excellent work Neil, congratulations on your fantastic achievement! Keep us posted on your nav endo when you stuck into it also!:thumb_up:
  2. Awesome work Mike. You'll have to run us through the nervous moments of the test!
  3. Excellent vid Kevin and a really good reference for people flying to and using Orchid Beach Airstrip. I did a precautionary search there in a 170 and it was really quite rough approaching the threshold. I think I was getting some ridge air. Nice landing too!
  4. Easter is a real pain for me also. It's peak time a work and also for the previously mentioned family reasons, it's just not practical.
  5. psst, Darky I found myself doing some of those things too, but keep it to yourself...
  6. Awesome work Darky! Sounds like we need an audio recording of one of your circuits...
  7. I was looking at getting a Jab and putting it online for a bit and hiring it for a bit to make it partly pay for itself. I rang my accountant and he let me in on some of the traps with the government 50% tax depreciation on assets ordered before 31 Dec last year. First of all you must turn-over in excess of $20,000 per annum and he said this is one area they are going to target come taxt time to claw back some of the stimulus money from people using it for their own advantage and not for a business. He told me this is what sorts out the 'hobby' people from the true 'business' people. If you haven't turned over $10,000 in the first six months, you may not be eligible for ANY depreciation, which is a bit scary and he said they will be looking very closely at this! Probably Tomo the only thing I see as being a big issue with making RAA pay in some way is insurance. It's a killer as it is but if you are doing anything other than normal flying, it may not be worth it...?
  8. Settle down fellow adventurers, this charge is used quite regularly for those who seek to climb things they shouldn't ie. telstra/water towers etc, town halls, churches, usually full o' the proverbial where there is really nothing to be gained adventure wise and the intention is to cause damage or launch objects (other than aircraft) off the top at other buildings/persons. It replaced an older charge of unauthorised climbing on structure but the legislative boffins decided to try to encompass a whole broad pattern of behaviours. It does seem that society is becoming very stale though and with every story you get some boring expert from some interest group givng their opinion as to why nobody sould do anything because everything is dangerous...
  9. I gotta admit, I started this thread with a certain idea and it's gone a bit wayward...but I like where it's going! ie. boats, fishing, places to boat and...fish...it doesn't get any better, except if you could catch fish from your plane. Only Querty and Maj would have such stories...surely!
  10. I think I'm gonna be sick! :yuk:
  11. Excellent work Tomo, as usual. Some great shots there...you can almost smell the exhaust on some of those ships!
  12. Awesome pics Thomo. What a fantastic day!
  13. Half your luck Terry, that's a great trip to do. I did it about 4 months ago and had a ball! Have fun and don't forget to post up your trip details and some pics. Sean
  14. OK team, we've all heard about the fantastic offer at Cooloola Cove Airstrip and I was just wondering what other strips are out there like this with facilities and hospitality, welcoming of visitors so we can all plan some trips around this great country. I'll kick off with my base strip of Kingaroy YKRY. Excellent sealed main strip 16/34, good grass cross strip 05/23, no landing fees, avgas available on credit card swipe bowser, a great little cottage cafe located on the western boundary fence near the threshold of 16. I've seen a lot of RAA types drop in for breakfast on the weekends and taxi right over to the fence and cross the road to the 'Artists Cottage' to have a fantastic meal on the verandah admiring the gliding/raa/ga activity in full view from your seat. I've been there myself and it's great! Nearby you have Nanango and Wondai Strips which are worth a look also. Out here at Cunamulla YCMU we don't quite so much on offer but the sealed strip is great 12/30. No landing fees, avgas on bowser through local council contractor, no call out fees, remote wireless eftpos payment. Just give them a call on the mobile number listed and they'll top you up. About 36 nm to the west we have Eulo, a great unsealed strip where you taxi and park right next to the main street and access a great little general store and pub serving meals etc. About 20nm to the north you have the Nardoo Farmstay, just give them a ring and they will make sure the strip is clear and they have great cabins/rooms/camping etc to stay in and a great communal fire place where everyone gathers each evening to tell lies etc.
  15. Top work Matt, the shot of the sun just peeking over the horizon was a great shot to finish on. Simply awesome!:thumb_up::thumb_up:
  16. Has anyone done the advanced flying endo and if so, what does it involve?

    NEW - Jabiru J120

I just saw on the Jab website under the pinstripes section, a picture of a J120 with the J160/170 undercarriage legs. Looks like they've beefed up the legs in line with the other Jabs.
  18. Hey Flash, welcome to the site. I can highly recommend Cameron Corner as an overnight stop. I rode my motorbike out there last week (would rather have flown though, just ask my hands and bum after 1300k's in two days!) and the managers are really pro-aviators visiting. You can taxi right up to the roadhouse and the meal is fantastic. It really is in the middle of nowhere but that's the highlight. Basic a/c cabins and a lot of the old outback culture and a cold beer or three! Just give them a call and find out the condition of the strip and if it's not up to scratch the manager will go and make sure it's right. He seems to be pretty proud of getting the strip right. Might be a good stopover after you've been to Arkaroola as Qwerty mentioned.
  19. Hey Mike, welcome to the site. There's a lot of others in here who fly the Tecnams and rave about them. Great to see you getting stuck into some flying! We'd love to see some trip reports of your adventures up that way. I've heard the scenery is pretty good up there...
  20. awesome vid mate, well done!
  21. Hi Ben, ASK (Air Services Kingaroy) have a 170 up there if you wanted to go for a fly in one.
  22. Thanks for sharing this with us Ewan. All the responses to your admission are a great learning source for us lower time pilots. I've found lately that I now run through my checks again when backtracking, just to make sure even before lining up and quickly running over things again. Does anyone else do this?
  23. I love the rugged toughness. I've seen some jabs put through some amazing terrain and the pilot and pax walk out, albeit with a few injuries. They are amazingly strong planes and will not come apart easily. I also like the comfort and the fact that I can afford to buy one one day as an average person without MD after my name. Sure you don't have woodgrained door trims and centre console fridges, but the appointments are pretty nice all the same. The engine is getting better and is currently very nice. The 170 I fly now has over 1100hrs on the engine/airframe and the only prob it's ever had was with a leaking valve, replaced quickly and back into service. My CFI also says that the engine likes to be worked and used regularly. If you baby it, then you won't get the life out of it. What's more Jabiru are an aussie aviation company that have survived well over the past 15-20 years and are forging ahead. That is unique to Australian aviation and they should be commended for this.
  24. That's what I was taught Tomo, flaps back to 2nd stage after landing and stabilising, then power on and take off. Sounds like you still had fun. Good work.
  25. John, great to see that you have the contacts for the right people to get involved. It sounds like an issue that can be worked on and given that a lot of other fields work in together well, then something can surely be done to help everyone out. Obviously this will only be coordinated with everyone working together with each other. The tug at Kingaroy, or the camel as it is known, is up and down very quickly and works in with us when we're circuit bashing also. Everyone who flies the tug makes all the right radio calls and with the local airfield rules (see ersa) governing glider ops, it all works well. At the end of the day, we all love aviation and just want to do as much of it as possible!
