  1. thanks Motz you have taken the words right of my mouth , and even though I have passed my third ( radio ops ) exam all on the first attempt, I will still study them, not just put them at the back of my mind. another good post thanks Nev. I see what you mean and fully undertsand there will be different terminology etc. as I have seen a few demo vids already. I dont intend to take too much to heart until I have passed navs and any other exams to Aussie standards, but what I do need to learn eventually is the yanky criteria if its ever possible to fly there. I hear other pilots say that we're coming into line with the FAA ( or vice versa ) more all the time. Steve oh and the poor guys not scared

    Hi

hi Johm and welcome, a 230 is my choice also but i'm a long way off that yet ( still a student ) then I have to get the money together. Jabiru had a couple 230s on their website a few weeks ago, maybe worth a look steve
  3. CAR = Civil Aviation Regulations. am I right guys? now heres one for you Marius where do I find a try exam Steve
  4. hi Yenn I read the formation flying limit was up to 100ft somewhere recently too, buggared if I can find it now though steve
  5. Hi Bilby, maybe you have misinterpreted me. I DO have impeccable planes, a good school, EXCELLENT CFI and instructors whom I AM VERY HAPPY WITH and am well on the way to becoming a pilot.... what I was referring to was.. I find it easier to learn from dvds than reading books, on top of that I want to never stop learning (heard that somewhere before ey Nev ) and I think it will be good to look over the dvds from time to time, to brush up on things, it maybe just a personal thing but its what I want to do. Another point being which I havent mentioned before is that I visit the USA every couple of years and the dvds would most likely help me fly there too. That might be a hurdle to get over, which I havent looked into yet, but would an Aussie certificate and/or training be acceptable in the USA? Steve
  6. its worked a coulpe of times for me  steve
  7. I read Jim Davis, the vfr guide and the ops manual, asked as many questions as I could and didnt have a problem with the pre solo or the bak. Now I have the radio exam which shouldnt be a problem either, then its navs and cross country. I'm thinking of getting a Recreational Pilot Flight Training Course on Interactive DVD Video from the states, they also have a transition to ppl one. Not being much of a reader ( I hate it actualy ) it may help me with the navs and x/c not to mention a going over of what I have already done. It may not be of much use here in OZ, will see. Anyway I'll keep you posted. Bushpilot, how have the qualifying rules changed ? I havent read the new ops manual yet. theres no pictures in there so it may take me a while :ah_oh:  Steve
  8. excellent vids Matt after watching these vids I doubt that I will be happy with a Jab that I plan to buy. only joking,
  9. sorry Merv, I done that one a few weeks ago - must have been a bit of a blonde moment for me :hittinghead: steve
  10. I too think you had too much flap for the elevator to overcome. I"m a low time student flying a 170, and once while milking the flap off from the first stage after take off I went the wrong way with the switch. It was just momentarily and I thought it wasnt enough to alter the flap but the Jab did pitch up quite noticably and i'm sure that if I had kept lowering the flap at that slow airspeed I would have had a stall to contend with. I would have considered milking the flaps very carefully after applying full power the first time, maybe this is wrong but as a said im a low time student 16 hours and with the exams out the way im heading for my first solo. Steve
  11. Ian I think they need to make an even bigger example of them than they are doing at the moment. Maybe a front page mugshot along with the penalty on every newspaper possible. Just my thoughts I cant handle wankers. steve
  12. hi Merv, ya right about the trick questions, well they arnt really trick but one has to fully read and understand them before answering. I have done and passed my BAK but the Pre solo air legislation is a newey to me, could you please tell me what it entails. thanks steve
  13. Theres the Qantas museum at Longreach Qld. they have a retired Jumbo called the Bunbury (I think) sitting outside, the story of how they landed it is awsome. Apparently the pilot spent months in a simulator practising landing on the short runway. All the seats and other not needed equipment were removed and trucked to Longreach, also it only carried enough fuel for one missed approach then to make it back to Townsville. The whole story and landing is on film inside the museum. Steve
  14. heres a site that has videos on overhauling the 582 especially the ignition, it may offer some tips http://www.lightsportaircraft.ca/rotax582rebuildingdvd/ hope this helps steve
  15. Thanks Darren, I sort of gathered it may be a military thing after Nevs post. Unless there are air police who may chase me at 5000ft :hittinghead: lol. I have heaps to learn and my brain often goes into overload, especially when I'm on late finals to land, but I'll get there. steve
  16. Some people boarding small planes had been blown over by winds up to 140km/h after leaving the terminal, Radio New Zealand reported. Hell Ben doubt if I would board a small plane in those winds. If I departed in a 140km/h head wind in the Jabiru that im learning in I reckon after about two hours of flight it would put me approx. 10 mins till landing at the airport I previously took off from. lol Steve
  17. Thanks Nev I was kinda thinking it may have been more technical than that. I'm only about three months into my training so I have heaps to learn, this forum is proving invaluable. Moz and Rocket: I pasted it in here after recieving it from a mate whos proberly as green as me on aviation so maybe I should have edited it. Anyway it is pretty funny wherever it may have originated from. Steve
  18. Does anyone know what "IFF" means ? all I can find in my flight rules guide is - identification friend/foe Steve
  19. Its not meant to be serious. Just a bit of humor
  20. Subject: Qantas Mechanic vs. Pilot Mechanic vs. Pilot Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one. After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident. --------------- P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what friction locks are for. P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right.. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny. S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics. P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed. And the best one for last.................. P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer. S: Took hammer away from midget. Steve

  22. I was in Bougainville PNG in 68 + 69 where, when taking a couple of kanakas on the back of a 4 x 4 traytop to pick up some thatched roof sections for a donga they were building for my family, I saw in the distance something glistening like aluminium amongst the jungle. (I was standing on the roof of the traytop 'cause of snakes!). The natives tried to stop me from going over there as they were scared ****less of it - so I went alone to investigate. I found a Japanese war plane with the skeletal remains of the pilot still in the seat.........and THAT's the first time I experienced a truly cold chill! Upon getting back to the village, I told the local missionary/law enforcement officer and in a matter of weeks the wreckage was removed. Thought nothing more of it for years (I was only 15 at the time) until 2006 whilst travelling in the U.S., we stopped at a Southwest private air museum to discover almost an exact replica of what I saw back then, still in the same decayed state that I remembered (minus the skeleton). I can't help wondering if it was indeed the same plane that I saw all those years ago. Anyway, I will dig up the photos I took of the US one and post it as soon as I can find them. Steve
  23. At 120 kgs you proberly need that extra bit of speed to land lol (only joking) Congratulations prety good feeling ay. I'm a new flyer too and lovin every minute of it. Tomorrow I'm doing stalls in a 170 Jab, dont really know what to expect but hope to get upside down a lot (wishfull thinking, dont think a Jabs the right kinda plane for that) keep us up to date on your progress Steve
  24. Congratulations Ian it is a top forum Steve
  25. Fair enough mate that is only YOUR opinion, which your entitled to. Most of us are not lawyers, I myself am a Mack diesel mechanic so I do have a good understanding of engines. bit of trivia for ya Harleys are the ONLY vehicles in the world which dont loose value, ask any insurance company. Not bad for a noisy piece of junk.
