  1. Coff's is right on the coast, and Williamtown is military.
  2. Hours flown this week: 13.3 Plane types flown: 4 Planes approved for solo flying/hire: 4 Endorsements passed: 1 (XC) It's amazing what a few hours in the cockpit will do for you. All it took was giving myself an extra 200m on final and being willing to use power. Next up: RPL

  4. What sort of minimum hours would you want for a few weeks rental?

  6. Yep, love the plane, but moving between it and a Jab I always muff up my approaches the first couple of times because it's so slippery it's hard to get down and slow. Same potential energy, just can't bleed it off as fast.

  8. Never have. My instructor offered to put me in the right seat to see if I flew better with stick in right hand and throttle in left.

  10. Two idle-power course reversals lost about 700ft in total. I might have cheated and made them about 160 degrees. This was with about 20 degrees of bank. Like this: But it's in a plane with 17:1 glide ratio, so I wouldn't try to do this in a Jab.

  12. Sorry - I am asking for general advice, and it was getting derailed into specifics of flying. It almost feels like mansplaining - why is the assumption (made early in this thread, for example), that I can't fly the plane? I know how to use rudders, I know how to land crosswind, I know how to use trim, I can fly a circuit. What I struggled with was flying to a familiar airport, in a plane I was familiar with but not at that airport, and not using all the visual cues from a different aircraft. I want to know how people avoid runway perspective illusions. How do you get your brain to not be tricked into little cues that will trip you up. (Also, switching stick hands - how do people do it?)

  14. I've been told that I trim too much! I think you should be able to do most of final, except the flare, without moving the stick if you get the approach right.

  16. I don't know. Vx is 55 with flaps hanging out; Vy is 75 clean. I could easily imagine having a couple of hundred feet different after a mile with those speeds. (RoC at Vy is 1220fpm, so that's 976 ft per mile at Vy; AoC at Vx isn't published but it would have to be better than 976ft per mile and worse than 1161.) On a glide approach, abeam the numbers, 0.9nm out from the airport (The Oaks) I had to do a wide left turn onto my end of base location, 2 180 degree turns, then sideslip, then apply full flap to get it down. Next time it's not busy I'll have to see what sort of glide racetrack circuit I can fly.

  18. Duxford's got a great museum as well, encourages you to touch the planes.

  20. Pretended I was flying the big iron and did a straight in approach to YWOL using the PAPI. With the engine at idle gliding at the PAPI glideslope is actually very feasible, and I had to slip to dump energy at the end! I'll have to try that again, and with a video next time.

  22. Is this the one I saw at YWOL this morning? Can we hire/train out of there?

  24. I logged 4 hours today, and did not take a single photo! There was a seaplane 500ft below us in the circuit in Lake Illawarra but on the right hand side so couldn't really take a photo.
