  1. Why did the PA38 "traumahawk" fall out of fashion?
  2. Thank god he's ok. I was at Tyabb last week and caught some taxiing runs with the cowling off:
  3. Are the RA Newcastle planes shared with RNAC?
  4. I quite like the flight along the coast to Moruya, although I've never gotten out due to my lack of ASIC card. My most recent flight (about 80nm north of yours).
  5. What's the best way to turn in turbulent conditions, where the wings have been rocking? Do you limit your angle of bank to ward against flipping if the turbulence drops a wing?
  6. I don't know why, when I don't really like driving fast in a car very much, I have a definite need for airspeed. Even the Warrior feels so slow.
  7. I got tested at Bathurst two weeks ago, and they came to Wollongong about two weeks before that (but I missed them by about 15 minutes). So the testing guys are definitely out there!
  8. ... for traffic a lot faster than what I've ever flown.
  9. The problem's the turn final, no? so 500-700ft, depending on the shape of your circuit. Mine's gone trapezoidal in an attempt to give myself more time.
  10. 1500' circuit??? I don't think that's really... legal's not the word, but advisable, given the potential conflict with overflyers. I don't think you ever needed a student license to take dual lessons, only to go solo. but for rural schools especially, you might not be able to get a couple of hours in a decathlon easily. I don't know what the legalities of an instructor bringing a plane out to a satellite field (with permission of the CFI, of course) to take a club through unusual attitude recovery training would be, but it'd be a great idea.
  11. I just finished my requirements for the RPL today! now to get my logbook photocopied and certified, and all the stuff off to CASA. I was chatting to the CFI of the warnervale school with the foxbat today; he says that there aren't any great options.
  12. I agree, however: - where would ra-aus schools get the training? - hell, where would some GA schools get the training? I've deliberately asked for spin training in two contexts now (GFA club, aerobatics-teaching school) and I'm really glad I got the experience, but to reintroduce spin training might be dangerous: http://flighttraining.aopa.org/fsb/news/120420to-spin-or-not-to-spin.html
  13. I'm sorry I missed it! but the weather over the escarpment at 3pm onwards was pretty nasty so I'm glad I didn't try and make it a day trip (and the Alpha doesn't have enough room for it to be much more than an overnight, in a hotel).
  14. RPL and go to Bankstown. Warnervale. (Are you sure warnervale is 1:10 from you? It's 1:10 from the city.)
  15. By-Law 2 says 'printed', though.
  16. The CAO is an exemption from the requirements for flying an aircraft. If you don't abide by the ops manual, you aren't allowed to use the exemption. See 95.55 4.1b. If you don't follow the ops manual, you're operating an unregistered airplane illegally.
  17. I meant safely leaving after the flying displays and getting back before last light. My CFI had a comment that I seem to like to fly at night... my last 3 XC trips have ended within half an hour of last light.
  18. is going to Ausfly as a day trip from sydney a reasonable idea?
  19. Is By-Law #2 constitutional if you have to pay to get the printed magazine? You could argue that you should not have to pay to get notice of an election sent to you.
  20. CAO 95.55 says that you must operate within the requirements of the Ops Manual. The Ops manual had a copy of an old CAO 95.55 which said that you needed a license under Part 5 of CAR 1988 to go into controlled airspace. An RPL is not a Part 5 license, so if you were following the ops manual at the time, you wouldn't have been allowed to fly a 95.55 aircraft into controlled airspace. In fact, under a strict reading of the current ops manual, you can't fly a 95.10 aircraft into controlled airspace with an RPL because of this issue (the ops manual containing an outdated CAO).
  21. I do love it when a woman is the main man.
  22. The Ops Manual has the status given to it by the CAOs. See Which raises the question, if the Ops Manual has as an appendix a CAO which is outdated and conflicts with a current CAO, does that mean that you can't do the thing which conflicts? I think the Ops manual needs a statement saying that the Appendixes do not form part of the manual.
  23. No, there were variously amended versions of the CAOs which referred to Part 5 licenses (which a RPL is not) vs Part 61 licenses. The air law is all very confusing.
  24. I found it; it's the Civil Aviation Order (Flight Crew Licensing) Repeal and Amendment Instrument 2014 (No. 1). What's confusing is that Issue 7 of the Ops manual has different editions of 95.10, 95.32, and 95.55; also the date on the 95.55 in the index is wrong compared the date in Appendix 3. What's the legal status of the Appendices to the Ops manual?
  25. Were you flying illegally before 13 August? given that you had a Part 61 license, not a Part 5 license, and the CAOs allowing you to fly into CTA on a 95.55 aircraft required a Part 5 license? This is the sort of ridiculous air law stuff that I'm talking about.
