  1. Id give this a go, (up to 10' maybe).
  2. Why did you buy an External GPS with it. Isn't your Tablets GPS OK, or do you fly out the Outback regularly? Cheers.
  3. I see they are about $150USD plus postage. It appears they require a box with a fan to cool the electronics. As they say, most are placed on the aircrafts dash. The worst place they could be. So I would need a box with a PC fan as well. Thanks for the info.
  4. Interesting you get equal 'paints' from GA. Are they more Commercial GA, or Private GA ops. Cheers.
  5. I was just searching OzRwys and came across their webpage on building your own ADSB Rx that works with Android OzRWYs. ADS-Pi: Low-Cost ADS-B IN for OzRunways It appears the four main 'Ingredients' can be bought for about $85.00 I certainly like the idea of picking up all aircraft near me so I can look out for them in a timely manner and avoid. Out of interest.....Practically how many other local aircraft are these picking up over the normal OZRWYs Traffic info, (Apart from Airline Traffic). I would assume most light GA aircraft and all LSA would not have ADSB-Out
  6. I read they only allow legit looking Facebook names. Is your Facebook under a name or some non descript type handle.
  7. Quote:.... "How do we help this bloke!" Buy him a Drifter and a book on 'Principles of Flight'.
  8. I was rather surprised to price a new Rotax at $25,500 for the UL 80hp and $31,000AUD for the ULS 100hp. That may be minus some accessories, delivery and of course, installation. Ouch! Not surprising many may be looking for reliable alternatives. I would prefer dual spark plug per cylinder though.
  9. Great video. I really like the look of this engine. Only three flying so far though. It will be interesting to hear how they go, when there are plenty more airborne and they are passing the 500, 1000, 1500 hour marks. Only single ignition though, didn't they say, although they quote a 20,000 hour failure rate. (compare to 600 hour failure rate for magneto).
  10. That Suzuki engine does look interesting. Only 1500 TBO at the moment. I suppose they will have to prove the engine to get 2000 TBO. Many of the spare parts could be replaced at relatively low cost (the parts that are OEM not made by Aeromomentum). Hope they are successful. The more 'reliable' choices we have, the better. Rotax are good, but relatively expensive (GA engine not withstanding).
  11. Ari, Yes had a look at the video. Less than 1.5 minutes to fold or unfold wings. I like the idea of not having to empty the fuel tanks to fold the wings. Kyle, You have obviously done your homework in regard to costs of building this kit. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately you are correct, getting a bit pricey in Aus for this type of aircraft, which is a shame. Cheers.
  12. Sounds good aripilot. How long did it take you to build your Trail. How long does it take you to fold / unfold the wings. (I know you may hangar the aircraft, but still interested how easy the folding wing system actually is). Cheers from Aus.
  13. The Wiki write up says it has a folding tailplane. I'm sure that's not correct. Probably not much point considering the width of the main gear. All metal looks good, although only 113Kt VNE and maximum 80Hp. Occasionally you see aircraft that can be converted from Tricycle to tailwheel. Best of both worlds depending what you prefer, and you can always change you mind. I'm surprised there are not more of them in Aus. Although Kyle's comments on the kit build and cost may put a few off. rotax618's neighbour may be the first in Aus.
  14. Groppo Trail 2.....Interesting aircraft. Great folding wing design, the trailer required to transport it could be narrower than other folding wing designs. Anyone have one. What's your verdict. Are there any in Australia. An internet search turns up nothing in Aus. Home | The Groppo Trail | All-Metal Folding-Wing Light Aircraft
  15. mnewbery, Thanks for the info. I didn't realise VHF TV was so close to the airband frequencies. (Buy new TV, Plug it in, autotune, watch). I will buy a descent airband Antenna, however I am not sure what I should be buying (see link above to all the very different VHF airband Antennas). But when I do figure it out, will upgrade. In the meantime I will buy suitable plugs to use my TV aerial. Thanks. Anyone had issues importing scanners? Cheers.
  16. Flyingphot. I hope the strip will be available to others. I'm based at YCAB and I'm always looking for somewhere close to fly to, other than YKCY or YWSG.
  17. Thanks for the replies. I have looked online for the Uniden Bearcat. They have quite a few models, including the suggested UBC355XLT. It has mixed reviews, although at $179A it doesn't look too bad for the price. That Realistic is a very good price too. As far as I can determine, It is legal to import scanners form overseas (they do not have any transmit function), has anyone had any issues importing scanners (not transievers). Ive seen a descent new scanner overseas significantly cheaper for the same model, than here in Aus. Petermah Are you saying you connect you VHF scanner to your TV aerial socket, and it picks up the airband well. I thought a dedicated VHF with give significantly better range. Problem is which one, heres some photos of VHF Airband Antennas vhf airband antenna - Google Search Pick one, any one!
  18. I'm after a Aviation VHF Desktop Scanner or Desktop VHF Base Station with selectable freq scanning. I already have a Handheld I am using now, and take to the airfield when I fly, but its reception is very poor when being charged, and I don't like flattening the battery every day. (Battery Life). It must be able to scan programmed freqs. I'm surprised there are so few options for what I am after. Any suggestions what to buy and where to buy it from. Also I would like to install an aerial on my roof to increase the range (and possibly pickup aircraft taxing at my local field. (I am 4nm from my local airfield and about 5nm from another). What would you recommend. I've seen prices range from $100 to several hundred. Straight poles and shaped antennas. Cheers
  19. It looks like she is enjoying flying. Maybe she could be a good ally of RAAus and GA in Aus, and push to significantly cut the bureaucracy, unnecessary medical requirements and cost to Private flying in Australia. We can always dream cant we?
  20. Quite so. Should I have attached a brown envelope to the front of the letter? Lets hope the letter (along with a letter from every other pilot in Australia) to casa, does some good. Even Class1 medical holders should be writing in now. Perhaps they may want to fly privately when they retire, but by then, they may not be able to get a Class 2. Some people have no foresight. Its all about their situation now, rather than how it may affect them in a few years time.
  21. Totally agree Mike. If pilots cant be bothered printing the letter out and mailing it, you have no right bitching on the subject in a couple of years when you lose your Class 2. I don't know if it will change things but at least I did my bit. I posted to one Casa and one to The Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, today. I hate this ridiculous bureaucracy by civil servants who have no idea about flying, or aviation.
  22. Is there another pre typed letter we can print off and send to Casa to address their Review of Medical Standards. I don't know the subject well enough to write a letter myself (and sound professional on the subject), but do agree the Class 2 is unnecessary for Private Flying (as they have determined overseas). Anyone have a link. Its a real shame the Casa medical seems to be a 'Guilty until proven innocent, rather than Innocent until proven guilty' system. They should have to prove you are unsafe to fly a small single engine aircraft privately (due to sudden incapacitation risk) rather than being able to simply cancel your medical until you can 'prove to them' you are not going to crash because of incapacitation, through an endless (and likely annually) series of expensive specialists reports. It shouldn't be legal to refuse a medical without proof, and based on research, they wont have sufficient proof.
  23. Not sure if this is somewhere else on this thread. But this is exactly what I was looking for. Just print one out and sign, then email or Post it in. Even those that are now medically fit to easily get a Class 2 should send one in. Because in a couple of years time, you may not get one, or only after a few thousand $ in specialists fees each year. Think of the future, not just now. http://yaffa-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com/yaffadsp/files/dmfile/AOPA_Chester_medicals4.pdf
  24. RPL = Recreational Pilots Licence. (as apposed to a RPC = Recreational Pilot Certificate) RPL More restrictive than a PPL. Doesn't require a Class 2 medical but a RAMPC medical
  25. First I've heard of this. Is Casa likely to approve another organisation (other than RAAus) to administer LSA flying and maintenance in Aus. Are you definitely expecting approval in the future, or hoping you get approval. Interesting.
