  1. If I was flying a J120 with a passenger and had no other option but to fly directly through heavy rain, besides not being able to see, if I used my instruments I should be fine, its not like the plane is just going to fall out of the sky. Has anyone been in this situation?
  2. plus you don't know how eroded the core is on an old piece of $#!T
  3. I thought you wanted a cheap one, if you go in and tell the wreckers what size you are looking for they can help you. but if you want a new one do what Ozzie said, get one custom made, they have 100s of cores and end tanks ready and they do it quick.
  4. If any one has trouble with a hot engine on climb, I can build them a water/methanol injection system, it ads less than 2kg to the aircraft and you only turn it on while you are climbing or if you are sitting on the tarmac for ages with the engine running. its such a simple system and is powered by a high pressure electric pump.
  5. Has anyone seen the movie "On Any Sunday" in the desert racing scene 5000 motorcycle riders take of in a line, great scene. If you could get say 10 or more planes flying in a row at a fixed rate of speed, then a call over the radio, when all the planes are lined up "GO" with no warning so no one jumps the gun. Race from one poing to another. Break it into class and have some fun.
  6. great, so while I'm getting potty trained the Major is off witnessing an great happening in aviation lol.
  7. Go to a motorcycle wreckers and get a bike radiator. don't get ripped of with a rotax one.
  8. Sounds a bit spooky Brett. It looks like a top plane you are flying. I wonder how it compares to a Jab. I see you can get it with a 3300 Jab, I wonder if its similar to a J230. I've been in 20kt cross wind on a grass strip, made for a fun landing.
  9. there are so many factors here are some. Air density, the air becomes so thin that the minimum takeoff speed is above the minimum for a RA. At high temp the aircraft structure can become too weak. The air cooled motor may not be able to keep cool at normal operating rpm. The cabin temp may be to high affecting the pilots decisions. Some components in the cabin begin to release harmful fumes above certain temps. Best thing to do when it is hot is relax in an air conditioned room.
  10. Air Racing in general is great. Taking off from one point and flying to another one would be great. Point to point. You wouldn't be able to have landing as part of the racing as people would come in too hot and get messed up.
  11. Not naming any names as most drifter guys will know him, that mad cowboy from Lismore "King Drifter" I remember sitting in the front of his drifter at about 40knots clipping weeds at full yaw side to side fish tailing and bunny hopping wire fences. It was so much fun. Low flying is great. I think a drifter class world be great, it would be fun to get a heap of mustering pilots in on the action.
  12. I cant believe you mentioned that dry lake, Its my favorite place on earth, I told my wife last time we drove past there I want to build a house on the hill overlooking that place.
  13. It would be cool at 500', have the viewing for spectators on the side of a hill so they can see better.
  14. PPL is a great thing to have, especially if you are planing to get a CPL and make a career out of flying. I love RA, its a great and friendly atmosphere and there are a lot less "clicky" types. One thing I get a kick out of is when PPL and CPL people think they have all the skills and talk them self up, only to eat dirt on a hard landing on a grass strip and they realise they have been flying heavy docile boring aircraft. As my wise old instructor said "if you can fly an old Jab based at rough grass strip you can fly any single engine GA aircraft". you will also keep your skills sharper too. Port Maquarie! what a great place to fly.
  15. Maybe if it started out as time trials and worked its way up to racing and those breakable pylons add to the safety too. Only need around 8 plans to have a race series, once that happens it will snow ball.
  16. during the day we chatted for a few hours, I think the kr2 is going to be a big hit, a guy on the site named Adrian Lewer picked it as the best all rounder and like your uncle I think he is right. I don't know much about the SAAA but I read some publications by them and they seem to be into some really cool stuff.
  17. I love Pylon Racing, I can sit for hours and watch youtube videos and documentaries on it and its the only motorsport my wife enjoys. We have already decided on going to Perth for the next one in 2010. she prefers the Red Bull style and I like Reno stye racing, both are great. Just like in motorcross, if you cant race you do freestyle (Travis Pastrana excluded as he is a freak) its the same with aerobatics BORING! sure, a well executed maneuver is great to watch, and each time someone pushes the envelope with something new its great, but I can watch 1000s of laps at Reno as each one is different and exciting but with aerobatics the same move gets boring after 5 times. The ultimate test of man and machine is racing, and in my opinion Air Racing is at the top of the list for cool. I would love to see more of it here in Australia, It would be cool to have a racing class called Aussie-F1, with planes like the Cassutt, Sonerai, GR7, AR-6 and so on powered by a stock Jabiru 3300 to keep it Aussie and a little bit faster, racing around a Reno style 2 mile oval. I would make sure I was at a fly in if there was a feature race. the start up cost of a Cassutt with a Jab 3300 is just under $50k, much cheaper than any profesional motor sport. 1 round per state so no one has to travel too far, knowing a local event would be happening once a year. I really value the coments of the members of this forum and as of yet I have not met any ding bats like most other forums. So what do you think of Aussie-F1 fellas?
  18. Very nice looking plane, I wonder if the new one will be Jabiru tough?
  19. very impressive...
  20. Your uncle is a champ. His plane is exactly what I would like to build, of course I would like to get it built a little quicker. That night I joined the Sonerai forum lol. Have you had a fly in it?
  21. At The Oaks its square. I always thought that RA was square. I know the "old boys" get very annoyed if a GA guys starts flying oval circuits.
  22. I struggle to walk 10m without aid, I was wondering if anyone knows of a good brand of folding walking stick small enough to stow in a Jabiru. All the brands I have tested have been too flimsy. Just for humor, here's some nick names I have received from fellow flyers at The Oaks: Hop along. Limpy. Prangster. Hoppy. That crippled guy. Now every time I get home from flying I cry myself to sleep.
  23. Regardless of anyone's opinions, we all want to pay less in the long run and we want more freedom. With freedom comes responsibility. stay out of the spot light and learn to be humble. Arguing just to be right without results is what teenage girls do. We all would welcome a weight change if it keeps prices the same, If anything less fees would be great. Self control is an art.
  24. I was chatting with an old chap on Tuesday who said that a friend was completing KR-2 in a custom size, as he said "too tall and too fat", that was in the final stages. If I see it flying at The Oaks I will take some pics for you. I like the steel frame as it has memory and goes back to shape, I would like to see the Sonerai in chromemoly (with the correct heat treating after welding of course) so as to lighten up the rear as to avoid using ballast in the back when fitting a Jabiru engine. Its usually steel frame with VW engine, and people struggle with the C-of-G after fitting a Jab 2200, so i figure less weight more reliability and more strength all round leaves more room for fuel etc.
