1. To continue the"pun"ishment- Yes I thought fowled plugs were appropriate for a turkey. How ironic CASA were checking ASIC's at Toowoomba when over the hill this guy was at work- I wonder if Aust Flying would comment on VH vs RA Aus credentials when this stuff goes on in the real world too. This is the second example of this I've seen with VH a/c in the last few mths - and I thought us trikers were supposed to be the crazy ones!
2. BTW the Cessna wouldn't run up this morning- his goose was cooked! Flew real low(ground) back to the parking area-it sounded terrible on run ups!
3. Super Cool shots yet again Tomo, and hope you really enjoyed the trike flight. We took our two students wives up yesterday and they were both blown away by how good it is to fly trikes. Fantastic weather, great reunions with many long time friends and acquaintances and again great to finally meet your whole family- Barry must tremble at the thought of more aviators in the family! Good trip back via Gatton, beat this afternoons weather and smiles all round- will post our shots when I get them from Bill next week. Will visit soon!! Ballpoint.
4. I noticed in the compared overlays with Hannes how Matt uses slightly more sky but effectively converts it to speed over a longer time to arrive at an almost identical time. Can you imagine what it's like inside their heads- frightening..
5. Matt Hall just got a fantastic second place to Hannes Arch who redeemed himself after Abu Darbi- great racing.
6. David, reckon you're going to be a real asset to the forum- you know the man is workin when he tells you tells you he can get her to 72-75kts if everythings right- again LEGEND! Look forward to meeting you at Monto in June.
7. Hey suck - Tomo has the credit for the photo's- I'm pathetic! I'd planned a trip to Tomo's and Boonah return this weekend but weathers popped it's head again. I've got 2 long weekends coming up but we're taking the trikes to Inglewood May day w'end- if I take the Jab instead I'll drop in then- how's it all going?
8. Natfly Magic Hey tomo- I reckon your Sunrise tail shot of my Jab's worth putting in - whatyareckon? Credit:Tomo:clap:
9. Legend effort! This is the sort of grass roots we need to protect - well done.
10. Eland, you're absolutely right- read Reichmann, ( glider pilots) or any other noted glider authors like Welch etc and they back up the direction/rotation thing. Essentially thermals are all variations of a upward flowing vortex, with "donut" like internal rotations, and varying vertical/horizontal flows through their cross- section. I spend over 30 years gliding and hang gliding and there is definately a "sweet" direction for any thermal, and it varies all the time. And yes as everyone has noted, only the birds get it right most of the time, but you can definately feel it when wrong, by constantly getting "thrown out' of the core, or constantly recentering to maintain best climb- oh it's all good fun- we even had the Tecnam going up on low pwr a few months ago. Returning to gliding is going to be my golf- but a lot more fun- miss it terribly.
11. Work with me on this.. Horizontal speed is defined as a vector parallel to direction of travel- right? A thermal introduces a vertical component of movement( energy) that when it acts on the aircraft at a tangent to the original vector will have a sum component that adds to that vector known as resultant- OK? so any vertical vector that works in the direction of Lift (even roughly will add to the forward vector (resultant), increasing the forward vector( airspeed). This is conversely true of sink which detracts from the lift vector- therby reducing airspeed. Macready worked all this out with Polar curves and came up with formula's that gave "speed to fly" based on Best L/D vs lift/sink and min sink vs time( Macready ring)- Glider pilots use it all the time although most have it all compuerised now! So tomo, you're right- if we do nothing else and encounter rising air- there is a minor(but noticable) increase in airspeed- think of it as vertical thrust, you will also hear and feel the increase in velocity( sum of vertical+fwd). It's how glider pilots, and Hangies "feel" lift and core through "seat of the pants" Now let's finish off on the sink side- fly into increasing sink, descent rate goes up- do nothing with stick aircraft slows down- reaction is to pull stick back to stop aircraft sinking-WRONG! you can now see where all the ab initio problems start! Of course we all know power is our descent rate control- in gliders you soon learn to get it right- stick fwd- speed up- protect airspeed- get through sink faster. Hope I haven't bored you yet- love discussing practical physics, particularly with flying!
12. Caboolture Microlights are planning a group trike trip on the Saturday - returning Monday, any prospective students or those interested in learning about trikes are welcome to join us there. Hopefully we'll have at least 3 trikes departing Caboolture. See you there.
13. G'Day Andrei- hope you get lot's from the site, and maybe make some good friends. Welcome.
14. Hey Tomo, still coming down from the w'end- great photo's like this don't make it easy. Thanks for sharing, mine are ordinary compared to this. Got into the trike yesterday and then took the better half for a sunset ride in the jab - can't stop sorry.
15. Yeh, bright Hey, ask Stiffy and he'll tell you it's just the normal aura that comes std with every Jab! Anyway, it's a a lot brighter than me at that time of AM- wish that coffee guy was up this morning- I didn't wake up till I got thrown around at Narromine on the way back- my mate back here said that the wind blew over some tents last night- never saw any- saw plenty getting lifted with heavy snoring tho!
16. Hey Bluey- cracker photo of the Jab eclipse- even better cause it hides me! Awesome weekend-totally relaxing and well organised...
17. Hey Bluey, just got back great to share a beer and good luck in the never ending search for the right plane- best of luck mate. Good trip back in 6.2 hrs for me- cu soon!
18. I too am on my third, and pretty XXXXed as well- the guys at Jab have been great but Microair really need to get on the front foot with this one. I got mine changed last Thursday with the latest "fix" and it was ok back to YCAB. Its a sinister problem that gets progressively worse. It appears to be some form of hysteris loss in a RC cct in the receive cct. The thing I keep remembering is how they pumped up Rev Q at Bundy prior to it's release- another case of the marketers getting way ahead of the reality! More real field trials please before we become the lemmings with poor customer service at the end. The M,N,and P variants were good except for their internal VOX ccts. There I feel better now- how do you read?
19. Sometimes the nose wheel pivot arm can come into contact with the exhaust about 6" from the outlet- you'll see tell tale marks on the inside of the exhaust- this is normally picked up at final assembly checks but worth looking at. Make sure the hinge pins on the rudder are also not binding at full deflection...
20. Hey Tomo- may give you a quick call on Thurs earlyto see if the forcast band of weather has passed- just gotta get throgh Ma Ma creek and we're away I reckon.
21. Can I suggest there was a private field at Somerton we used to glide at which is only 15k's from town,or Lake Keepit Soaring club another 30 k's west. Other than that there's Godfrey's sky ranch as suggested and I recall there's a couple of ag strips as well near nundle SE of Tamworth. Maybe this helps- you could speak to the guys at Tamair for more local advice....
22. Yep all organised - took lotto and been to church to pray for weather, lawns mowed, wifes been obeyed and works up to date- BRING IT ON! Should have a gaggle of half a dozen SE Qld pilots motoring down Thursday Friday- watch out for us , well be the roudy ones!!
23. I was working up there in the late 80's when Charlie hit at Cape Bowling Green just nth of Bowen - we were stuck at the whitsunday sands resort in fibro huts-pretty scary! For everyone in the area we're all just glad there were no human cost reported. I'ts beautiful country which heals and the people are all genuine aussies. So hang in there and think of fine winter days ahead!
24. Yep, I'm all over it. All the cyclones should be packed up and gone in a week- bring on some stable weather patterns!! Taxiway Charlie camping for me.. 4 days of rec aviation up to my ears please.
25. Tomo- weather is XXXXe here at present! I've got a mate who's plane is hangared at Boonah- he's going to give me a heads up on the weather west- hope to get there and we can finally catch up. Love my Jab! Thanks.
