are you one of them?

When you think that took us to the digital age where we can write a program which will draw a picture as good as a photo (if we enter enough data), feed digital instrument readings in and get graphic output anywhere in the world in real time, and communicate using writing, voice, picture or facsimile.

Bugger, we can't do smell yet!

008_roflmao.gif.692a1fa1bc264885482c2a384583e343.gif I'm so pleased with myself for getting that 01.But, how many of you really hanker for octal? Back in the 1970's, we had to enter a small program through the console of a Honeywell 200 mainframe just to clear memory. The program was entered in octal.

And to get a program to run, there was a small sequence that ended with hitting a big button labelled "Bootstrap" and another labelled "Run". Ah . . . those were the days! None of this new fangled gui stuff.

Being a REAL programmer (C, C++) I have a good knowledge of binary, octal and hexadecimal counting systems. Assembly language was (and still is) fun. But I got into all this in the early 80s because I could see electronics (I started life as a radio/TV tech) was turning to rubbish as the throw away junk started showing up. My first 'computer' was a home made thing you programmed via a hex keypad and used a 6805 processor. They were the days when men were made of steel and ships of wood and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. Oh, and I loved valves - my first homemade amplifier was a valve amp, massive 3 watts per channel (two 6bm8s and a 6x4).

Hi Kev,

Don't wish to sound 'picky' but you made a spelling mistake between the 01001 and the 10101 just two 0011's after the 10101. If you change the last 101 for a 1001 the message will be MUCH clearer.

Firstly CFI, there are rules against swearing on here, I'm surprised at you.

Secondly, I don't think he is, but maybe he's hiding it.

Thirdly, I won't cover all the kookaburra calls, but they are an amazing bird.

kg...your binary code wont work011000110010101010010001011100101010

..it isnt divisible by eight...

Its a 6 bit binary just like braille. Isn't the web great. There is even a translator for 8 bit ASCII.
