RA-Aus Board Election 2012 - Candidate for NSW

Colin Jones

Aviation Employment Statement. "I hold no positions in any aviation

related organisation which pays an income, remuneration or honorarium"

Relevant experience:-

o Ra-Aus Certificate, flying out of The Oaks, near Sydney

o Retired Professional Engineer and IT Manager - Telstra & OTC

o Retired National Treasurer (honorary) of APESMA, a major member

based advocacy not-for-profit (income exceeding $20Mil - over 80

staff)

o Retired NSW Branch President of APESMA

o Committee member of a number of small local social, sporting and

youth organisations

o Ashfield (NSW) Citizen of the Year 2010

o Australian Defence Medal (RAAF Reserve)

My involvement with Recreational Aviation is relatively recent,

however I have a life long family association with aviation where my

father and uncles were commercial pilots and my brother a LAME.

An early decision to go to University limited my choices to flying or

eating and later having a family had the same effect. Having the kids

off my hands meant I could once again indulge, now in RA, and it is

bringing much enjoyment.

I am offering myself for election as I believe I have qualifications

and a range of experiences that will be useful to the board and of

benefit to the members.

I understand that there are issues of transparency and representation

which are causing some debate as well as how the organisation is

travelling financially and as the representative body of the members

and as the delegate of CASA.

As the board of a member based organisation the RA-Aus board must face

these challenges which are unlike those of a public company where you

can sell your shares and just walk away.

As a Professional Engineer and IT Manager I have had significant

experience in turning needs into solutions using technology.

This required making the business case, determining standards, issuing

and selecting tenders, employing staff and ensuring that the solutions

were implemented in accordance with needs, met requirements of

timeliness, costs and utility.

As the Treasurer of APESMA, being part of the executive team, I had

oversight of the organisation which was operated by a CEO.

The function of the executive was to represent the members, setting

the targets budgets and fees and monitoring the operations.

With changes to the legislative basis of existence there was regular

needs to review the rules of the organisation to ensure compliance

and, as we changed through a range of mergers, to ensure equity and

fairness of outcomes as well as representation and governance.

It is my intention to fly around and see a lot more of NSW from

upstairs. I hope to meet more rec flyers. If I am elected I hope to

exchange views and gather the opinions of members, particularly those

who can’t get to NatFly, the AGM or other RA-Aus sponsored events.

Recreational aviation is fun, deserves to be sponsored to the rest of

Australia and needs better access to more airstrips, without that

access being undermined or compromised by CASA, government or local

councils

I can be contacted on 0439 979 950 or [email protected]

Col,

are you sure you want to do this buddy, under the current circumstances where:

1. It appears the Board wont hold management accountable and;

2. Any on going errors or incompetency could expose RA Aus to liability claims and;

3. Where the current PI insurance cover for RA Aus is only $500K and;

4. In circumstances where that PI cover was insufficient in a claim against RA Aus could expose the board / committee members to potential liability claims and;

5. Where the board / committee liability insurance cover is only $500K and;

6. In circumstances where that cover is insufficient you could be personally liable with your fellow board/committee members for the balance ... ???

Buggered if I would ... but if accountability was put into play as we the members would expect then the risk profile would be different ...

Good luck my friend, a few before you tried and resigned ...

I would like to ask you what you think you will do about holding management accountable or do you think there is no accountability issues at all ...

Sorry about the hard questions Col, I actually consider you a good man for the job, but do you know what you are up against here?

If you want to give it go you will have my support.

Regards,

You may even be up against election tampering against you by a senior manager or become so weak in being able to hold senior management up for treason against their own employer, the RAAus (proven by a letter sent to a Coroner and of which you will get to hear more about in due course), or find your name and money being put on the line by senior management without you even knowing about it, be tarred by the brush of corruption etc etc etc

Col, I really do wish you well mate...I have heard that of the 4 contenders for the 2 NSW positions, of which you are one of them along with the 2 existing members plus Dave Caban again, there is now only 3 of you left. Dave Caban has withdrawn so as not to water down the 2 current members votes against you and instead Caban will stand in the by-election.

I think every NSW member needs to get behind Col in any way they can and vote for him so there is one new member for NSW whilst by default one existing member is returned. Unfortunately every other State only has 1 person standing so no election needed

I support Col although I have not met him. He is prepared to put his voice forward and actually try to do something. If no one stands then nothing will change or at least get looked at with new eyes.

Good luck and you have my vote.

Thanks folks,

On the brighter side. I love flying and put a lot of trust into the unknown ever time I fly. I do lots of things to mitigate the potential for failure but I am not perfect.

By standing as a candidate for RAA I am attempting to mitigate the potential for failure of RAA and the potential failure of my enjoyment of flying and having good fun. Someone has to do it and I have had about 30 years of Not-for Profit board level fun to be fully aware of the obligations, pitfalls, and success to be of use.

Cheers

Already did that... Didn't work.

I have a whole stack of wombat stickpins that I give out as little gifts. The Wombat signifies the Australian spirit - tough, thick hide, and an ability to dig in and dig through. There is another symbolism but I'll stick with this one for the moment. I wear my Wombat stickpin with pride.

Does this mean that Runciman, Tizzard and Co have won...evil wins out over good now that even the "Constitution Reform" has been stopped by Runciman and all this is being supported by the rest of the board members, the people that you supported in the hope they would help you...as one person said to me the other day, the RAAus is 20% worse then what it was at this same time last year.

Apart from Col who has decided that enough is enough and has stood up to be counted, there are a couple of others who have also been nominated to fill the seats of a couple of board members that have elected not to stand again...and with no other nominations, they have automatically been elected unopposed so I wish them well and every bit of success in hopefully helping to move RAAus into an entity that can be considered ethical, professional and have the respect of all
