Job Interview Suggestions?

Guest cfm56

Unfortunately many of the interviews are a scam. They are required to advertise but the job has already been filled. This must be soul destroying for genuine job seekers. Did you see the 4 Corners show last night?.I would advise applicants to not gild the Lily too much and be frank and honest in your approach. If your prospective employer thinks like that it will be a better place to work in, than one where BS baffles brains. Nev

Yup I watched 4 corners, there should be a lot of people getting locked up for fraud in the future.

I'm starting to feel the world is full of crooks. Everyone's spivving the system. Not just the poor people Dazza. Nev

Oh I agree, when I say people getting locked up, I didn't mean the people looking for a job. I mean the bosses and workers of those companies who are submitting fraudulent documents and getting paid money from the government.

Its not the people... its the system. It is broken and it isn't going to fix itself...not even close... Kind of obvious once you stop bullspitting yourself about what the future holds.

Funny thing, when I was interviewing for a new Receptionist/Secretary, I looked at all their resumes, phoned their previous employers and checked their references, checked their spelling and grammar, and I still picked the one with the best boobs.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is the photo and the unmentionable - ethnicity. In Australia, if your name is John Smith then the photo may be optional. If you have an ethnic name, put in a good full-face photograph. If the employer is prejudiced, then the photo will either confirm the bias and save you the trouble of interview, or will show that you appear to be a reasonable human being worthy of interview despite your ethnic name. Prejudice in Australia (and probably elsewhere ) runs deep and is seldom acknowledged or discussed. It is often not racial but instead it is based on country of origin. I wouldn't want to be a Nigerian looking for a job.

What ?. . .not even a SMILING, attractive Nigerian ? ? ? ? seriously though, I've never heard of anyone attaching ( Nor being asked to attach ) a photograph to a CV,. . . . .unless of course the job was for a porn movie star,. . . . then they'd also probably ask what position the applicant was considering working in ? ? ?

I remember the Four Corners Programme, . . .shame we don't have hard hitting high quality documentaries like that in the UK anymore, ( not on Freeview anyhow. . .! ) all we get is Home and Away, Coronation Street and fairly old repeats of Skippy, oh, and and the Whirlybirds too. . . . ( I really LOVE those shows with lots of Helicopters . . . . . ) Gawd blimey, . . I almost forgot M*A*S*H . . . .

That's a shame, but no matter, I have found this thread quite a good one, it's surprising how threads develop isn't it ? Some people are lucky if they are trained in the discussed subject from an early age, I regard myself as remarkably lucky in that my Mother was the first pupil from her primary school to qualify for entrance to the UK Grammar School system. She used to slap me around the head with a wet teatowel as a youngster, when I failed to spell something the correct way, my Father was an engineer, who drummed maths into me from an early age also, which is perhaps why I've never had any difficulty with the subject.

It is regrettable that school leavers in the UK nowadays seem to have such a poor grasp of basic English as well as mathematics partly due to "Trendy" teaching methods. . . . this does not help with CV preparation either.

I just wish this laptop had a better keyboard, as I continually hit the Caps lock when I'm in full BS mode ( ! )

Phil

If your maths is good, please solve this for me....

if n = a/b + b/c then re-arrange for a. Unlike those who are NOT math gurus, we do NOT need to have values for the variables, just show me how to re-arrange and I'll buy you a beer. I'll let you know that I finally solved it but only with the help of a mathematician and a white board full of scribble. I am a math nerd but I am not a math expert - there is a difference!

Hi Jab,. . . .Not a maths nerd, and I Don't know any mathematicians.

I'd need a bit more incentive than "A beer" to get out the whiteboard that I don't have, . . . .perhaps a case of good quality very dry sparkling wine, preferably South Australian stuff,. . .then ( Maybe ) I'll transpose the formula, just to prove that I could do it . . . have to admit I'd be a bit disappointed if the formula related to something not very interesting though. . . .

N=a/b+b/cN=ac+bb/bc

Nbc=ac+2b

Nbc-2b=ac

(Nbc-2b)/c=a

It is 0020 on a Sunday night and it has been nearly 40 years, so I could be wrong

You cannot move the bc across because of the addition between ac and bb. You have forgotten brackets, n=ac+bb/bc should be n = (ac+bb)/bc

The solution involves a quadratic equation. Believe me, if you take less than an A4 page to arrive at the answer, you're probably wrong!

OK so I left the brackets out. That doesn't change the result.

The first step was to provide a common denominator ie. bc by multiplying a by c and b by b, which leaves us with n = (ac+bb)/bc

you then multiply both side by bc which leaves Nbc=ac+2b I agree you could not do that because of the addition before finding the common denominator but you can afterwards.

Shite - I have made a blunder. The original problem should be n = a/b + b/a not a/b + b/c so I apologise there. I think you'll find it somewhat more challenging. It would be nice to be able to enter equations nicely like in Mathcad or similar software.

OK I'll give this one a go

n = a/b + b/a

n=(aa+bb)/ba common denominator

n=(2a+2b)/ab simplify inside the brackets

nab=2a+2b multiply both sides by (ab)

nab-2b=2a subtract 2b from both sides

-2b=2a-nab subtract nab from both sides

-2b=a(2-nb) take the a outside the brackets

-2b/2-nb=a divide both sides by 2-nb

a=-2b/2-nb reverse equation to get a to the left of the equal sign.

Doesn't work. Did you try before posting this? let a = 2 and b = 3, then n = 2.16666667

Your solution (using my numbers above makes a = -1.333333... when it should be 2.

By the way aa is NOT 2a - think about it. If a = 3 then aa = 9 but 2a = 6.....

Of course you are correct. I did say last night that it had been a long time. I'll try again tomorrow. Aa is obviously a squared not 2a. So bb is b squared.

Is the weather that bad out there that none of you can fly?074_stirrer.gif.5dad7b21c959cf11ea13e4267b2e9bc0.gif

By Jove you have it! Taking the negative root works for me. The part under the root (-n+2)(-n-2) should actually be written as n^2 - 4 I think you'll agree. Weather was nice today so I flew.

Self-employment does that to you.Some genius recognised early on in my working career that I don't work well in teams, wrote it in a report, next thing I knew I was transfered to a two man post in the bush. Gee I would have loved to shake that blokes hand!

I went through a stage thinking the opposite and after working for myself for 20yrs and had a gut full was playing with the idea of working for someone until my wife said how long have you work for someone and dealing with the public, She said I'll give you 2 weeks before you someone by the throat, so still playing it safe and working solo.
