Using RAAus-applied ASIC for PPL

Recommended Posts

You do NOT have to have an ASIC, a lower cost option is an AVID, but your MUST have one or the other for a CASA issued license.

The AVID isn't much use if you want to fly into security controlled airports and seeing the only reason I got my RPL was to get the accompanying CTA and controlled airport endorsement to fly my RA aircraft into such places the AVID isn't an option unfortunately.

CASA insist on one or the other for an initial issue but there are plenty out there who do not renew and no one chases them up. For example, it is not required to have a current ASIC for a BFR. They only have to stay away from RPT airports unless they have a passenger with an ASIC or want to take the chance.

While we are talking about asics I have a question.

How many people can one ASIC holder escort? The reason I ask is our club has quiet a few members but I would be one of the only ones with a ASIC and if we were to fly to the likes of Narrabri or Moree or Dubbo I wondered how many I could escort. Is there a limit or if we stayed as a group would that be ok?

Please note we have no trips planned to any security airports at this stage but I have just been wondering and thought there is no harm in asking.

Fair question Sam , I think I would run that question past the Manager or ARO at the airport in question . I guess that in the end it is his decision, but I seem to recall that visitors can be issued with a VIC card ( for visitors ) but must be escorted by a valid ASIC holder .....Bob

You may escort all of the passengers in the aeroplane that you are flying.

So I can't fly in first and then escort a pilot from another plane?

I guess that makes sense although for the likes of Narrabri it does seem like a little overkill.

Sam for places like Narrabri, call the airport operator and obtain permission to bring them in without individual ASICs. It should be OK at small regional fields, probably would not work at a capital City Primary though.

We have had numerous trips with a number of aircraft. Until a month ago I never had an ASIC. I hooked up with whoever had one whenever it was needed. The only disadvantage was that at some airports I couldn't wander freely but as part of a group, never an issue.

The whole ASIC rules are a complete schmozzle in this area.

Airport operators can make their own rules. At Uluru a group of my mates had to get an escort to and from their aircraft from an airport security person even though every person in the group had their own ASIC. Had to wait for the security people to a time that suited them ( on country time 051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif) and then to add salt into the wound said security person had a low level " local airport only " grey ASIC while very member of the party had red all Oz high level ASICs.

Many airport operators give out their own ASICs ( grey and red). I get mine from Cairns Airport authority. Much easier than the standard CASA ones.

In Darwin on one of our trips we had to all have our own ASIC & got each card photographed by security before they would open the gate for us. 16 guys all champing at the bit to get going and we had to line up and get every card photographed. No escort by security then but all photographed and details taken.

At Leonora security would not give out the code over the phone to GET OUT of the airport without an escort. Two mates landed there and found a code gate to get out. Phoned the number advised they had to be escorted OUT even with ASIC cards. Only when the security didn't turn up and they phoned again and realised the escort was on the phone at kalgoorlie airport ( administered both airports and guard was at wrong airport) did the security guy relent and gave them the code over the phone.

Crazy ASIC airport tales you would not believe!!!!
