  1. I've done that SO many times, usually accompanied by various swearwords! But it all (seems) to have clicked (at least a bit) now so I, in all my infinite wisdom and advanced hours () can say, you'll get there :) My FI told me "everyone learns by f-ing up" and it was far far better to make all sorts of mistakes with him there to show me how to fix them than alone. So just remember, it's all good experience. I've bounced so many times, I've become pretty dab at correcting them now!
  2. It probably is my eyes telling me what to do and my judgment improving etc, but right now I would describe it as 'feel' - so even though it is my eyes telling me what to do etc, it doesn't seem like that right now when I'm doing it, so the way I describe it is 'feel'. I was trying to differentiate it from consciously deciding when to flare - like, thinking that 'ok I'm X ft above the ground and that tree is in the same place on the windscreen as usual, time to flare' (or something similar), rather I just sort of unconciously know (or think I do) that it's time to flare. I guess everyone would describe what they do/think a bit differently, so it's hard to put down what I mean (I know what I mean when I say things, but it doesn't mean that others get the same meaning from it I do!) All the responses are helpful, thanks all :) Btw, I'm at 25.6 hours now.
  3. Slarti owns a cheetah, I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you all about it :)

  4. Out of curiosity, do you guys consciously decide when to flare or do you do it by feel? I think I've started doing it 'by feel' (which is working, so I'm not going to change it), I don't consciously think "ok we're at this height, time to flare" I just sort of feel like it is time to flare so I do (and it seems to be working, nearly all unassisted landings now ) Perhaps I was overthinking things earlier (looking for too many cues) and this is how it's supposed to be? But yeah, just out of curiosity, conscious decision or flaring 'by feel'?
  5. I'm not against guys knitting, just not in pubs.....
  6. All I can say is...
  7. A United Airlines 747 captain tries to make light banter with Sydney, Australia, Approach Control Captain: "Good morning, Sydney, this is United XXX, we're 50 miles out and have your island in sight ..." Approach: "Roger, United ... you're cleared to circle the island twice, then it's okay to land."
  8. I have a friend who's boyfriend, while we were in a pub, sat knitting. Got so many weird looks that day... i_dunno
  9. I'm also keeping a log of my flights at JetRecord as a sort of backup, although that does rely on the site not disappearing...
  10. My mum's been trying to teach me to knit for about 2 years now without much success...
  11. Hey, welcome to the site! :welcome: Thanks for the compliment on my blog, it's good fun keeping it going :) I'll be keeping an eye on whether you end up building a plane. I'd like to, but I don't think I'd trust the wings to stay on once I was done! - Darky:incognito:

  12. You can get pencil cases made out of that wetsuit stuff, maybe it'd fit in one of those?
  13. I do apologise Qwerty, I will have to check the dictionary and update my (apparantly incorrect) definition of random. Have to admit I'm curious about those goats now though... Just to clarify, for myself I think I'd do the full set of checks just to be certain that everything was working properly. The reason I was asking was mainly that my nutty law-trained mind could find ways to argue it both ways (should do, shouldn't do) so I was merely curious about what other people did. :)
  14. And the woman went shopping and flying and spent lots of money on shoes whenever she wanted
  15. You can also download the Flight Instructor Manual from the CASA website which talks about common student problems and things...I find it useful to have a look at after I've read the bit in the Flying Training Manual just to get a bit more info Stick and Rudder looks good but is $60 in the bookshops, so I've asked for it for Christmas instead
  16. I seem to have suddenly gotten better at them and I've no idea why...I suddenly seem to be flaring at the right time (well closer to the right time) and I don't know what's changed, I think I'm doing it by feel so I'm slightly worried that if I get stressed or whatever it'll fall apart because I'm not really sure why it's working...does that make any sense?
  17. It does sound better than 'he could land on a 50 cent coin' (what is a dime worth anyway?)
  18. I was told to buy the ATC student pilot kit which I reckon is quite good although has stacks of detail at times which can occasionally get a little confusing. I've also managed to borrow the Bob Tait BAK from a nice guy in Canberra  which allows me to use both and get things explained a different way. I probably wouldn't recommend this route if you couldn't get one set free/cheaply because otherwise it's awfully expensive... I've heard good things about the Dyson-Holland books but haven't tried those myself because I intend to do the GA BAK so I'm not sure how much help they'd be for me. I have heard they're good though :)
  19. Thanks all :)
  20. And therin lies the basis for my question! Cheers Tomo  On the checklist I use, the 'pre-takeoff checks' include all of those - all the mag/carby heat/flap/etc checks as well as the full, free and correct controls and hatches & harnesses. So (keeping in mind that the engine hasn't been turned off at all or anything) rather than following the checklist exactly, you'd more pick out the ones that are more likely to need re-checking. So not so much the mag/carby heat etc checks, but the ones that are more likely to have changed - fuel, hatches/harnesses, controls etc. Does that sound right?
  21. It's more that I think of random things at random times and I know I'm going to forget by my next lesson (especially when I'm madly concentrating on my attempts at landing) so I figure I may as well chuck some of the randomer ones on here before I forget them :) But don't worry, I do ask him questions :) Posting some of them on here helps me to remember to ask about them too!
  22. I'm not trying to avoid doing them, it's more I'm wondering what the accepted practice is. :) When turning the engine off, then yes of course I'd do them. What I'm mainly wondering is when you do a full stop, don't turn the engine off, just taxi back to the runway to do another take off. Do you need to do them then as well? Or since you haven't turned the engine off at all, it isn't really needed?
  23. Yet another of the random questions that strike me at various hours of the day and night (this one struck me on the train home today, staring out the window at the rain...). I'm sure the answer is fairly obvious, but still... Let's say you've been zooming around the circuit for a bit and then for some reason do a full stop instead of a T&G (not enough runway left for the go, instructor deciding the jump out, whatever reason). My question is, do you still need to do your pre-takeoff checks before you jump back into the circuit? I know it's probably obviously "yes, of course you must you berk", but it seems arguable both ways. I mean, you're about to take off so it seems logical that you should do them, but since you've just done a stack of circuits and would've kept on doing them anyway, is it kind of redundant to do the pre-takeoff checks because it is presumably working well since you survived the last stack of circuits? Apologies if you all read this question and go "I can't believe anyone is asking this!" :peepwall: Note to all out there: never become a lawyer, you'll find ways to argue everything two ways and it'll drive you absolutely bananas
  24. I see you're featured in the Dec issue of the RA-Aus mag...there I was, flicking through it, when I see the name 'Thomas Scott' and go 'isn't that young Tomo?' Great article, hopefully it gets some young-uns in
